Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, November 12, 2003 Mustangs shut down Loggers to win first round playoff game By Rick Paullus A sw arm ing defense by the third-ranked Heppner M ustangs held the V em onia Loggers to just 104 total yards and helped them to a 47-2 win in the first round o f the OSAA/ US B ank/Les Schw ab Tires Class 2A football playoffs in Heppner on Saturday, Nov. 8. The Mustangs improved to 10 and 0 on the year and advance to the q uarterfinals w ith a h o m e g a m e a g a in s t th e second-ranked M yrtle Point Bobcats on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m . The Mustangs wasted little tim e in getting on the scoreboard taking the opening k ickoff and driving 62 yards in fo u r p la y s g e ttin g a touchdow n. Tyler Boyer ran for 12 yards, K yler Lovgren went for nine, Chuy Elguezabal ran for 16 yards and Boyer took it in from 25 yards out for the score. Lovgren kicked the extra point to m ake it 7-0 ju st 1:34 into the game. A fter forcing a punt the M ustangs w ent back to w ork as B oyer ran tw ice for 12 yards, E lguezabal ran for 13 m ore, Jode Coil picked up four, Lovgren ran for 28 yards to the four, where Boyer took it in for the touchdow n. The kick w as no good, but the M ustangs had a 13-0 lead. A fter another Logger punt the M ustangs went back to w ork as Lovgren ran twice for 20 yards and caught a pass from Elguezabal for 18 yards. Justin B otefuhr caught tw o passes from Elguezabal for 23 yards, Elguezabal ran for eight yards, Boyer ran for four and Elguezabal hit Tanner Britt in the end zone from nine yards o u t fo r a to u c h d o w n . Elguezabal hit Botefuhr for the two-point conversion to make it 21-0 early in the second quarter. The M ustangs added another touchdow n a m inute later after a Logger fumble as Lovgren ran tw ice for nine yards, Elguezabal ran for 18 yards to the five, and Coil took it to the three, where Lovgren took it in for the touchdow n. Elguezabal hit Britt in the end z o n e fo r th e tw o - p o in t conversion to m ake it 29-0. The Mustangs got the ball back after forcing yet another punt and put together another drive as Lovgren ran twice for nine yards, Britt took a pass from Elguezabal 36 yards, and E lguezabal ran tw ice for 23 yards, then hit B o te fu h r fo r an 1 8 -y a rd touchdow n. T he extra point kick w as blocked, but the M ustangs led 35-0 at the half. The M u s ta n g s stopped the Loggers on their opening drive o f the second h a lf and w ent back to w ork as Elguezabal ran for 14 yards and hit Lovgren for 11 yards and Matt Kenny for 14 yards. B oyer ran for 17 yards then Elguezabal hit Lovgren in the e n d z o n e fo r an I I - y a r d touchdow n. The extra point w a s b lo c k e d , b u t th e M ustangs led 41-0 m idw ay through the third quarter. T h e y p u t to g e th e r another drive as Lovgren ran twice for 13 yards, Boyer ran for 12 yards and Kenny broke free up the m iddle for 48 yards, but they couldn’t get a score and gave up the ball on downs. On their first play, Britt knocked the ball loose and Brian Haguewood scooped it up at the eleven and took it in for a touchdow n. The two- point conversion failed, but the M ustangs held a 47-0 lead. The kids qualified for the sectional com petition by p la c in g firs t in th e lo cal com petition held in Heppner in September. In the 8- to 9-year- o ld d iv is io n : C a r rie H aguew ood placed second w ith a total o f 69 feet in the girls’ bracket and Garret Gibbs totaled 152 feet to place sixth in the boys’ brackets.
