The ball was caught by Clay Morter who ran about 25 yards before being tackled. The Cardinals kept going up the field getting more and more first downs. Then, on a sweep, Justin Archer ran the ball for a touchdown. The field goal was not good. The score w as 6-0 Cardinals. T he E cho C o u g ars then received the ball and w ere tackled by a num ber o f Cardinal players. The Cougars could not get a first down. The C a rd in a ls th en to o k over, making another touchdown by Alan Rietmann. T he E cho C o u g ars tried again and m anaged to make their way up the field to m ake a touchdown. The two- p o in t c o n v e rsio n w as not good. The score w as 14-6, lone. The large turnout resu lte d in c re a tin g three team s (“A ” , “ B ”, and “C ” ) w ith som e players floating between teams to increase the amount o f playing time and to help strengthen the team s during competition to create o p p o r tu n itie s fo r m o re improvement. Im provem ent w as a highlight during the season. The seventh graders learned the basic fundamental skills, w hile the “A” Team, due to the exceptional talent, learned very advanced skills and were able to capitalize on these skills during competition. The Heppner Jr. High volleyball teams finished with very successful seasons. The “A" Team finished undefeated w ith a 14-0 record and for many o f these girls, they were Eighth Grade Cham pions for a second year in a row, while the “ B” Team finished as the Seventh Grade Champions. T he “B ” and “C ” Teams participated in the Echo B-C Tournam ent and ended their season w ith first and second place finishes. The “C” Team gave the “B” Team a run • fo r th e i r m o n e y in th e cham pionship gam e, but the “ B" Team cam e out on top. Heppner placed three m e m b e rs on th e A ll- T o u rn a m e n t T eam (Je n n a Bow m an, Sherilyn Peck and M elissa R obbins-W est) and the “C ” Team capped o ff the to u r n a m e n t w ith th e Sportsm anship Award. H eppner Jr. High is full o f n a tu ra lly ta le n te d athletes and w ith their great attitudes will contribute greatly to the M ustang vo lley b all program in the future. DA’s report Luis A ngel L opez was convicted o f B u rg lary -1, a Class-A felony. Lopez was sentenced to 36 months superv ised probation, 90 days in jail, 80 hours o f com m unity service and paym ent o f $ 1214 in fines, fees and restitution. Lopez was also convicted o f Theft-2, a Class-A m isdem eanor. For this, he w as sentenced to 180 suspended days in ja il, 24 m onths bench probation and paym ent o f $ 124 in fees. back w ith a strong offense m aking other touchdow ns by C o ry P e te r s o n a n d C la y Morter. The C ougar’s offense didn’t go that well. There were m any bad punts and som e b lo c k e d p u n ts . O n o n e blocked punt by A iden Burt a n d C o ry P e te rs o n , A la n Rietmann picked it up to walk in for the touchdow n. A t the end o f the first h a lf the score was 41 -6 Cardinals. T he C ardinals cam e back in the second h alf to kick off. T he C ougars ran back to be ta c k le d b y D a lto n C am pbell, M att C olem ann, and RJ Ram os. The ball was fumbled many tim es and was recovered by Paul Ham s and o th e r te a m m a te s . In th e se c o n d h a lf th e C o u g a r ’s offense seem ed to be running sm oothly. They m ade m any touchdow ns and good plays. For the C ardinals, G unner Jessen and P eterson m ade some good runs up the field. O n d e f e n s e th e C a rd in a ls had so m e good tackles by K ip K rebs, w ho also had m any good blocks. Luke B radfield m ade som e tackles along with Colemann, and Kevin Fow ler who made som e catches throw n by Paul Hams. The final score was 41 - 36, Cardinals. Order Magnetic Door Signs HERE Heppner Gazette-Times Colts beat Simplot to win championship By Rick Paullus T he H eppner C olts outlasted Sim plot to take the H e r m is to n G rid K id s cham pionship by a score o f 18-12 on Saturday m orning, Oct. 25 in H erm iston. The C olts finished o ff the year a perfect 8 and 0 in winning the championship, after finishing second a year ago. The Colts also w on the title five years ago. Sim plot had the ball first, but the C olts defense stopped them on dow ns as Jordan H atfield m ade tw o tackles for loss to give the C olts the ball at the Sim plot 35-yard line. C hance Day ran for three yards and then for four more, after an offside penalty on Simplot, for a first down at the 23-yard line. After another offside penalty, Wacy Coil ran for 13 yards and Jake Gregory took it to the four w here Day took it in for the touchdow n. The kick was no good, but the Colts led 6-0 midway through the first quarter. T he C o lts d e fe n se stepped up again as B rent Eckm an, Bryan H olland and G reg o ry m ade tack les for losses during Sim plot’s next drive. The Colts w ere unable to m ove the ball and Sim plot put together another drive late in the second quarter, but Day and Eckm an knocked dow n passes to end the threat and the half with the Colts clinging to a 6-0 lead. The Colts took the ball on the opening possession o f the second h a lf and w ent to work as Coil ran twice for 13 yards and Day ran for four. Two personal foul penalties on Simplot m oved the ball down to the Sim plot 15-yard line. A fter an offside penalty and faced w ith a third and five, Eckman hit Jared Huddleston in the end zone for a 10-yard touchdow n. The kick w as no good, but the C olts led 12-0 m id w ay th ro u g h the th ird quarter. Sim plot cam e right back driving down the field to score their first touchdow n o f the day on a 23-yard run. The kick w as no good and the Colts led 12-6 late in the third. The Colts cam e back to answ er, putting together a drive, as Coil ran for five and E ckm an ran tw ice for seven and a first dow n. A fter tw o m otion penalties, Coil took a pass from Eckm an 10 yards and Holland ran five yards for a first dow n at the 35-yard line. Eckm an hit H uddleston for a 15-yard gain, Coil ran for five, but a m otion penalty brought it back and H olland w ent 16 yards to the seven. Eckman took it around the end on a bootleg for seven yards and a touchdow n. T he kick was no good, but the Colts led 18-6 early in the fourth. S im plot cam e right back with a score o f their own on a 33-yard run. T he kick was no good, so the Colts led 18-12 w ith 2:45 left in the fourth. Eckman ran for seven yards on first dow n. A fter an incom plete pass, H olland ran' for 11 yards and a defensive penalty took the ball to the 37- yard line. O n third and seven, H olland w ent around end for 17 yards to the 28-yard line. D ay broke for a touchdow n, but a penalty brought it back to the thirty-two. Zack McCarl w ent for five and H olland picked up eight, but Sim plot took over on dow ns at their ow n 2 2 -y ard line w ith 13 seconds left. T he clock then ran out giving the Colts the win.
