Heppner Colts beat Boardman, 34-13 By Rick Paullus For the second tim e this year the H eppner Colts beat B oardm an to run their record to 5 and 0 by a score o f 3 4 -1 3 . T he C o lts play U m a tilla at H e p p n e r on Wednesday, Oct. 22 in the last regular season game and with a w in w ill p la y in th e c h a m p io n s h ip g a m e in H erm iston on Saturday, Oct. 25. The Colts had the ball first and drove down the field as Wacy Coil ran for 12 yards. C hance Day ran for 11 yards and B rent Eckm an w ent for nine yards to set up Eckm an’s 11-y a r d to u c h d o w n ru n . B ryan H olland kick ed the extra point to make it 9-0 with 2:29 left in the first quarter. Ben W ood recovered a Boardman fumble to give the C olts the ball at the 48-yard line. Coil ran tw ice for 19 yards, Day ran tw ice for 11 yards and a tripping penalty took the ball to the fourteen w h e re E c k m a n h it J a re d Huddleston in the end zone for the touchdown. The kick was no good, but the Colts held a 14-0 lead. B oardm an then put together a driving move to the C o lts ten, but the defense stiffened and they took over on downs. Holland picked up 33 yards on a reverse then Eckm an threw a short pass to Coil w ho w ent 58 yards for a to u chdow n g etting a good block dow nfield from Wood. Coil ran for eight, Jake G regory picked up six m ore and after a false start penalty, Eckman took o ff on a b o o tle g 55 y a rd s fo r a touchdow n. The kick w as no good, but the C olts led 26-0 late in the third quarter. Boardman came right back and scored on a three- yard run and ran in the extra point to get within 26-7 going into the fourth quarter. The Colts cam e right b a c k w ith a n a n s w e r as Gregory ran for 10 yards. Day w ent for 15, Coil picked up five and Holland broke free for a 3 5 - y a r d to u c h d o w n . Holland kicked the extra point to m ake it 34-7 early in the fourth quarter. Boardman came back w ith a touchdow n on a long run to get w ithin 34-13, but th a t w as as c lo se as th ey would get as the clock ran out on their next drive before they could score. ITte Mustangs ended the season w ith a 4 and 3 record winning their last two games. The M ustangs got on the board in the first quarter on a 30-yard pass from Justin D elveaux to Kody Lovgren and clung to a 6-0 lead at the half. They added to it late in the third quarter on a five- yard pass from Quinn Peck to K ory P a u llu s w ith C a se y M aben running in the tw o- point conversion to m ake it 14-0. O n th e T ig e rs c o ts n e x t p o s s e s s io n , P a u llu s picked o ff a pass at his forty- five and went all the way for a touchdow n to m ake it 20-0. The Ponies ended their season w ith a perfect 6 and 0 record, outscoring their opponents 176-35, giving up j u s t tw o to u c h d o w n on defense. The Ponies took over on downs on their 40-yard line a n d w e n t to w ork on the ground as S pencer Palm er rushed four times for 34 yards. Sean M urray picked up eight m ore, M att M cCabe rushed tw ice for 15 yards and Lane Bailey went the final five yards for the touchdow n. The two- point conversion failed, but the Ponies led 6-0. J a k e Van D o o m recovered a fum ble on the e n su in g k ic k -o ff, b ut th e P o n ie s c o u l d n ’t ta k e advantage as their 6-0 lead held up until the half. The Ponies took the second half kick-off and drove down the field getting 18 yards o n th re e c a r r ie s fro m M cC abe, Palm er picked up seven m ore and B ailey hit M cC abe for a 17-yard gain, but penalties killed the drive w ith the Raiders taking over on downs. Bailey hit Murray for an eight- yard gain and Palm er took it in for the touchdow n. The c o n v ersio n failed, but the Ponies led 12-0. The Raiders got the ball back on a fumble on the kick return, but the Ponies held on dow ns at their ow n 31-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Palmer broke free on a 69-yard touchdow n, but a clipping penalty brought it back to the Raiders 46-yard line. The Ponies didn’t let that bother them as they drove dow n the field with Palm er capping the drive w ith a six- yard run for the touchdow n. The Ponies led 18-6 after the conversion try failed. M cCabe recovered a fumble on the ensuing kick-off and the Ponies went to work again as B ailey ran for 12 y a rd s , M c C a b e fo r fiv e , Palm er w ent for 15 yards, M urray picked up four and Grant Sm ith ran twice for six yards, but the Raiders took over on downs at the five-yard line. M urray then picked o ff a pass and returned it 14 yards for the final touchdown to m ake it 24-6. The Ponies beat the W eston Panthers the w eek before at Weston 44-0 racing out to a 22-0 lead after one quarter and a 36-0 lead at the half. Mustangs use big plays to beat Bulldogs By Rick Paullus The H eppner Mustangs only ran 33 offensive plays, but that was more than enough as they beat the visiting C u lv e r B u lld o g s 55-6 on Friday, Oct. 17 in C olum bia Basin C onference play. The M ustangs, now 5 and 0 in the CBC and 7 and 0 overall, will be at Sherm an County, also 5 and 0 in the CB C, in a key league gam e w ith the winner having the inside track at the CBC championship. The M ustangs took the opening kick-off and went to work on what would be one o f their longest drives in terms o f tim e o f p o s s e s s io n , beginning at their 31 -yard line. K yler Lovgren ran tw ice for 21 yards, Tyler Boyer picked up three, Chuy Elguezabal lost three yards, but hit Tanner Britt for a 17-yard gain, then broke free around end for a 31-yard touchdow n. Boyer c a u g h t th e tw o - p o in t c o n v e r s io n p a s s fro m Elguezabal to make it 8-0 early in the game. The M ustangs took over on their own 35-yard line after a Bulldog punt and went right to work as Elguezabal hit Britt for a 19-yard gain, ran for three yards, hit Lovgren tw ice for six yards, then hit Justin Botefuhr for 34 yards to the one-yard line. Lovgren to o k it in from th ere and Elguezabal hit Britt for the two- point conversion to m ake it 16-0 after one quarter o f play. T h e te a m s tra d e d punts and after the M ustangs forced another punt they took over at their ow n 47 after Lovgren returned it 16 yards. A fte r an in c o m p le te pass Lovgren took a short pass from Elguezabal and took it all the w ay to the end zone for a 53-yard touchdown. Lovgren kicked the extra point to make it 23-0 early in the second quarter. T h e B u lld o g s p u t together a drive on their next possession getting inside the M ustangs 25-yard line, but Zack Skaggs picked oft'a pass and returned it 76 yards to the B u lld o g s 1 2 -y a rd lin e . Lovgren took It in from there for the touchdow n and even though the c o n v ersio n try failed the M ustangs took a 29- 0 led w ith 3:45 left in the second quarter. On the Bulldogs next possession, Elguezabal picked o f f a d e fle c te d p a ss and returned it for a touchdow n, but a pass interference penalty b r o u g h t it b a c k . B ria n H aguew ood m ade tw o sacks for a loss o f 25 yards qnd forced a punt late in the half to give the M ustangs one m ore chance to score. Starting at their ow n 32-yard line, Lovgren took a shovel pass from Elguezabal 61 yards to the seven with eight seconds left. After spiking the ball to kill the clo ck , Elguezabal hit Britt in the end z o n e fo r a to u c h d o w n . Elguezabal hit Botefuhr for the two-point conversion to give the M ustangs a 37-0 lead at the half. The M u s ta n g s defense forced a punt on the B u lld o g s first p o sse ssio n taking over at their ow n 30- yard line. O n third and ten, C ody W alton took o ff on a reverse and raced to the end zone m aking two nice cuts to g e t th e to u c h d o w n . T h e con v ersio n failed, but the Mustangs led 43-0 early in the third quarter. E l g u e z a b a l intercepted a deep pass on the Bulldogs next possession at the Mustangs 23-yard line. Boyer then broke free for a gain o f 72 yards getting a crushing block on the sideline from Skaggs along the way. Boyer went four yards to the one then took it in to make it 49-0 with 4:33 left. T h e d e fe n s e h e ld again forcing a Bulldog punt w hich W alton took 45 yards for a touchdown again making several nice m oves to get to the end zone. The conversion failed, but the M ustangs led 55-0 late in the third. The Bulldogs held the ball most o f the fourth quarter finally getting into the end zone late in the game. The M ustangs got a 26-yard gain on a pass from Ju stin D elv eau x to Ju stin Gregory as time ran out. H aguew ood and Britt each added 11 points, with Lovgren adding 10 points. Elguezabal completed eight o f 12 passes for 197 yards and tw o touchdow ns. Lovgren had four receptions for 120 yards and ran for an o th er 60 yards on eight carries and Britt caught three passes for 43 yards. The Mustangs gained 468 yards on their 33 plays on offense.
