The annual Deschutes r a f tin g a d v e n tu r e w a s a success, with 54 com m unity members making the trip. Dir. Merrial D. Vinson W atch for the Travel M errial D. V inson, 82, form erly o f M onum ent, died Tuesday, Sept. 9 ,2 0 0 3 , at Juniper House in Pendleton. A graveside service w a s h e ld S e p t. 12 at Monument Cemetery. Vinson was bom Dec. 31,1920, at Lexington, to Oris and C atie G ridley Padberg. She later m oved to H eppner with her family. They remained at H eppner for a tim e then returned to Lexington w here she w as raised and attended school. O n M ay 20, 1939, sh e m a rre d L .D . W a lte r Vinson at Pasco. The couple moved to Clarks Canyon near Heppner in 1942, then moved to C u p p e r C reek b etw een K im berly and M onum ent in 1 9 4 5 . T h e y s e ttle d at M onument in 1968. Vinson’s husband died in 1996 and she m oved to Ukiah in 1997, then to Juniper House in Pendleton in 2000. She w as a 3 0 -y ear m e m b e r o f th e R e b e k a h Lodge. She enjoyed sew ing and rock collecting. S u rv iv o rs in c lu d e daughters, Lora Vaughn o f N im p o L ake, B r itis h Columbia, Canada, and Mary C o rley o f U kiah; brother, C harley Padberg o f D ayton, WA; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, by a son, Harvey, and a brother, Eldon Padberg. A ccording to m inutes o f a rec e n t m ee tin g , H C C has “ c o m p le te d th e H e p p n e r Strategic Plan for 2002-2007 and are rea d y to turn the document over to the Heppner City Council.” The m inutes w ent on to say: “The lack o f interest and attendance for H eppner C o o r d in a tin g C o u n c il m eetings has prom pted the th re e o f us to d e c id e to disband.
