SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, September 3, 2003 Mustangs roll past Enterprise By Rick Paullus The H eppner M ustangs scored early and often in building a 52-0 lead at halftime and cruised to a 52- 12 w in o v e r th e v is itin g Enterprise Savages on Friday, Aug. 29, to open to the 2003 season. T he M ustangs w ill face a m uch to u g h er team when they travel to Reedsport on Friday, Sept. 5 to face the defen d in g B ig Fir L eague cham pion Braves. The junior varsity will play two quarters before the varsity gam e starts at 7 p.m. The Mustangs wasted little tim e as they took over at their ow n tw enty-three after forcing a punt. Tyler Boyer ran for fiv e y a rd s th en C h u y Elguezabal found a big hole and took o ff for a 72-yard to u c h d o w n ru n . K y le r Lovgren ran in the two-point conversion on a hobbled snap to make it 8-0 with 9:26 left in the first quarter. E n te r p r is e put together a drive on their next possession but the M ustangs defense held w ith B randon Seitz m aking a tackle behind the line o f scrimmage on fourth dow n to give them the ball at their own thirty-six. Elguezabal then kept the ball on the option getting a good block from Jode Coil and raced dow n the sideline for a 64-yard touchdown. The kick w as no good, but the M ustangs led 14-0. T h e d e f e n s e h e ld again and this time Elguezabal took the punt all the way back fo r a 6 0 -y ard tou ch d o w n . L ovgren’s kick was good to m ake it 21 -0. T h e d e f e n s e h e ld again with the Mustangs taking ' over at their own 35-yard line. Lovgren then took the handoff and sprinted 65 yards for a touchdow n and after the pass f a ile d o n th e tw o - p o in t conversion try they led 27-0 w ith 2 :5 4 left in the first quarter. A fter another punt the M ustangs took over at their ow n 28-yard line and after L o v g ren ran for 13 y ard s several penalties took the ball back to the eighteen. M att K enny ran for five yards to b eg in th e se co n d q u arter; Elguezabal hit Tanner Britt for 24 yards, and then hit Lovgren on a screen pass for 10 yards an d a first d o w n. Coil and Boyer each ran for three yards before L ovgren took it 24 yards for the touchdown. The run failed but the Mustangs had a 33-0 lead. T he M ustangs took over at the Enterprise 40-yard line after another punt and it was B o y er’s turn as he raced 40 yards for a touchdow n. Lovgren kicked the extra point to m ake it 40-0 with 6:23 left in the second quarter. The M ustangs took over at the Enterprise forty- tw o after the defense held. K e n n y ra n fo r fiv e th e n Matthew VanCleave hit Aaron D e lv e a u x fo r a 3 7 - y a r d touchdow n pass. The pass failed on the conversion try but the M ustangs led 46-0 with 3:01 left. A fter a deep kick-off pinned the Savages inside their 10-yard line, a fum bled snap w a s r e c o v e r e d by th e M ustang’s Brian Sm ith fo ra touchdown. The run failed but the Mustangs took a 52-0 lead in to th e lo c k e r ro o m at halftime. The Savages scored a touchdown in the third quarter and another in the last two m inutes o f the gam e as the Mustangs used all their players. U n d e r a n ew ru le ad o p te d by the C o lu m b ia Basin C onference, w hen a team is up by 45 points or m ore in the second half, they will play with a running clock. This gives both teams a chance to play kids w ho otherw ise might not get a chance to play. The Mustangs offense racked up 426 total yards, 329 on the ground, for the gam e with m ost o f it com ing in the first half. Lovgren ran three tim es for 102 y a rd s and tw o touchdow ns and caught tw o passes for 36 yards. Boyer ran three tim es for 48 yards. The defense w as led by Kory Paullus with 18 points taking advantage o f extended p la y in g tim e w ith B o y e r adding 10 points and Lovgren nine points. She w as transported to the G ood Shepherd M edical Center ER in Hermiston, then to th e P e n d le to n M e n ta l Health facility. -M C S O rec e iv e d a report o f loud m usic com ing from a residence across the street from the c a lle r ’s in Irrigon. May 9: M C SO dep uty, while on a security check, n o tic e d s o m e o n e in s id e H uw e’s Washboard in Irrigon. The subject advised he w as doing security at night. The ow ner was contacted to con firm. -M C S O rec e iv e d a rep o rt o f 4-5 ju v e n ile s in Irrigon yelling and making a lot o f noise. The subjects w ere contacted and given a w arn ing. -M C S O receiv ed a report from a caller in Irrigon but there was a language bar rier. Later, M C SO w as ad vised that the caller had a ten ant that had unauthorized peo ple living in a rental and taking items. There were also threats being m ade against the caller and her son. -M C S O rec e iv e d a report from a caller in lone o f v a n d a lism and a p o ssib le break-in at the new school site. -M C SO , B oardm an Police Dept., West Extension Irrigation District received a report o f a road being washed out in Boardm an. The subject has a warrant on him.
