To be a person o f good character, youth must develop strengths o f the 4 “H’s”: head-they must know what is good; heart - they must desire to do the good; hands - they must be willing to do good; and health - they must d e v elo p a life sty le th at su p p o rts the d esire and willingness to do good. The Morrow County 4-H program striv e s to d ev elo p good character in 4-H members. Qualities that define good character have been debated by various groups, but in 1992, the Jo se p h so n Institute ofEthics, with the help o f scholars, parents, youth w o rk ers, and o th e rs, p u b lish e d the “ A spen Declaration”. This Declaration has become the cornerstone for the character development education programs in the United States. The A spen Declaration states: 1) The next generation will be the stewards of the world; 2) The well being o f society needs citizens with good character; 3) People do not automatically develop good m oral ch aracter. Children must be taught so that they develop the values and abilities necessary for moral decision making and conduct; COME VISIT US AT THE MORROW COUNTY FAIR 4) C haracter education is based on core ethical values- p illa rs of c h a ra c te r development, trustworthiness, re sp e c t fo r o th e rs, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship; 5) These core values transcend cultural, religious, and socio-economic differences; 6) A lthough character education is first and foremost an obligation of faith communities, the community in general, schools, and youth and fam ily serv in g o rg a n iz a tio n s are also responsible; 7) Youth have a better chance of learning moral values if all groups work together to teach and reinforce moral values; and 8) Every adult must take responsibility to model and teach the pillars o f character development. You can see, that although this Declaration was only developed in 1992,4-H, as the youth program o f the la n d -g ra n t U n iv e rsitie s (Oregon State University) has been using similar guidelines for the past 75 years. GO Music Variety Troop back again for Fair If you enjoyed them or missed them at the Celebrate Heppner events, GO Music Group will be performing at the Fair, Friday, Aug. 15, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 16, from 12-1 p.m. GO c o n sists o f community members who enjoy performing all different kinds o f music. Come a get a second dose o f GO music at the Fair.
