The Wranglers Riding Club held the fourth o f its annual series o f spring play days on May 18. The events were held this year at the Morrow County Fairgrounds Arena in Heppner on the afternoons o f April 26, May 4,11 and 18. Each week there were three different events for the contestants. The first two events were always barrel racing and pole bending. The third event was different each week and included the Figure 8 Stakes Race, Loop to Loop, Rings Race, and the Scury R ace. A ll the kids who participated in a least one week o f the four received a bag o f treats at the fourth playday, and overall season winners who accumulated the most points in their age groups received prizes such as bridle headstalls, saddle blankets, spurs, ropes and halters. The winners include the following: Stickhorse: first place, Coby D ougherty; second place, Evan Kollman; third place, Keegan Gibbs. Each year the Wranglers Club also gives a large traveling trophy to the family or individual who has shown the most improvement in their riding skills. This year’s winner was 5-year-old Rylee Kollman. She is the daughter of Amy and Brian Kollman of H eppner, and the granddaughter of Greg and Jan et G reen u p , also o f Heppner. W ranglers w ill continue into the summer with four m ore fam ily events scheduled every other Friday night at the fairgrounds arena beginning on Friday night, June 13, at 7 p.m. The summer playdays will all be in ajackpot rodeo format. It will cost $2 per entrant per event. W ranglers Riding Club is open to anyone who wants to participate. There is an annual family membership fee o f $25, or $15 for an individual season membership. Piano students complete adjudications Nine piano students from Heppner and Lexington recently completed syllabus adjudications with the Oregon Music Teachers Association. The adjudications were held in Hermiston and Pendleton. The students and their co m p leted levels are as follows: Daniel VanCleave, Level I A udition; Devin Robinson, Level I Evaluation; Rebecca Jepsen and Anna Unruh, Level III Evaluation; Kristal Temple, Level IV Audition; Eric Jepsen and Kristen VanCleave, Level V E v alu atio n ; N athan VanCleave, Level VI Audition; Meaghan Unruh, Level VII Evaluation. Students completing evaluations are required to perform three or four memorized pieces in addition to m u sician sh ip sk ills. Musicianship skills include scales, chords, arpeggios, sight-reading and ear training. Students completing auditions may perform any combination o f memorized pieces and/or musicianship skills. Teachers of the above students include Amy Jepsen, Darren VanCleave and Myma VanCleave. Lana Orr received low net of the field. Loa Henderson received least putts of the field. Seven horses or ponies and nine d riv ers participated in the 3rd “Drive You Crazy” horse and pony driving event at the Morrow County fairgrounds, Saturday, May 31. Drivers were Mim Myren, Kim Findley, Dick, Karen and Kristal Temple, Kristy Crowell, Jerri Emert, Sue Hayes and Dick Rice. They competed in several different games. First was a warm-up; the Bridge and Ribbon run to help learn to cross bridges. Second was an obstacle cone course. Two drivers, Kristal Temple and Kristy Crowell, turned in perfect scores in the cone course. Next came the keyhole race. The fastest time ( 11.42 seconds) was tuned in by Dick Temple, second fastest (14 seconds) was taken by Kristal Temple. Musical Gates was won by Kristal Temple, with second going to Kristy Crowell. First place in barrels was Mim Myren, with second going to Jerri Emert. The next event will be a potluck and a drive in the country, hosted by member Jerri Emert, on Thursday, June 26. We would welcome any drivers who want to join our club or who just wish to join us for this drive. Our purpose is to have fun while we train our horses and ponies.
