SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 21,2003 Mustangs sweep Vikings in softball By Rick Paullus The H eppner Mustangs picked up two more w ins in the E astern O regon League sweeping the Umatilla V ikings 14-8 and 15-10 on Tuesday, M ay 13 in Umatilla. The M ustangs improved to 6- 10 in th e E O L a n d 8 -15 overall. The M ustangs scored a run in the first w hen Nikki Sisk reached on a fie ld er’s choice and cam e around to score on a single by H eather Yocom and added three more in the second w hen C helsey Betsinger and Emily Bergstrom sin g le d , S te fa n ie H an so n scored one w ith a sac fiy and M arcy M iller and Sisk each had RBI doubles. T h e V ik in g s c am e back to take a 6-4 lead, but the M ustangs cam e back in the fifth when Sisk and Krystal N aim s w alked, Yocom had a RBI single, Alecia Geer had a RBI double, Betsinger scored two with a single, Hanson had a RBI single and came around to score on an error to m ake it 9-6. The V ikings scored tw o in the bottom h a lf to get w ithin 9-8, but the M ustangs added tw o in the sixth w hen Naims and Yocom singled and both scored on errors. They put three m ore runs on the board in the seventh when Sisk and N aim s singled, Yocom sacrificed one o f them hom e, G eer had a RBI single and Blake Allstott had a RBI single to m ake it 14-8. H a n s o n w e n t th e distance on the m ound to pick up the win. Yocom went three for four with three RBI and scored tw ice. G eer and B etsinger each w ent tw o for three with two RBI. N aim s went two for three and scored three tim es. Sisk w ent tw o for four and score three tim es and Hanson had tw o RBI. In the second gam e, the Mustangs jum ped out early scoring four runs in the first inning as M adison B ailey re a c h e d on an e rr o r a n d scored on a fielder’s choice by A llstott. Sisk reached on an error, N aim s walked, Yocom singled, G eer forced a run in with a walk, Betsinger scored a run w ith a ground-out and Hanson forced in a run with a walk. They added four more in the second w hen A llstott walked and scored on a triple by Sisk, N aim s had a RBI single, Yocom was hit by a pitch, B etsinger had a RBI single and Bailey w alked to force in a run to m ake it 8-0. The Vikings scored three in the bottom half, but the Mustangs came back w ith two in the third when Sisk singled, G e e r w a lk e d , M e g h a n M cCabe walked and Hanson and B ailey each w alked to force in runs to m ake it 10-3. T he V ik in g s cam e back to get within 10-7 in the bottom half, the M ustangs scored one in the fourth w hen Sisk doubled and scored on an error and four in the fifth w hen G eer and B ergstrom singled. Miller had a RBI single and Hanson scored tw o with a double and scored on an error. The V ikings scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth, but that was as close as they would get. B ailey cam e on in relief in the third to pick up the win. Sisk w ent three for five w ith a double, triple and scored four runs. Hanson went one for tw o with three RBI and B etsinger had tw o RBI. Bingo, goodbyes at Senior Center Long days and warm w eath er has brought m ore bingo enthusiasts to the St. P a tric k ’s S enior C enter on T uesday ev en in g s. People gather at 7 p.m. in the dining room for their w eekly gam e. Each person contributes food for the evening. Until 9-9:30 p.m ., participants enjoy the game, snacks and visiting. The number has increased from six to eight, then 10 to 15, and now m ore than 20, regularly. Florene R obinson gives her tim e to m an ag e the gam e during the evening. Incom e received from the bingo activity is used for S e n io r C e n te r needs and equipment. M arian M urchison, the apartm ent m anager, has resigned and plans to move to N e v a d a to be n e a r e r to m em bers o f her fam ily. A farewell event is planned for M arian on Tuesday, M ay 27, beginning at 4 p.m . at the center, in honor o f her and her w ork, prom oting and taking care o f the apartm ents and n e e d s o f th e r e s id e n ts . E veryone is w elcom e and invited to attend and express appreciation to her, personally, for her w ork in the community as well as the center. D uring the Board o f D i r e c t o r ’s m e e tin g on W ednesday, M ay 21, m em bers will com plete and refine plans for the Sunday, M ay 25 F lo o d Com m em oration dinner. The dinner will begin at 2 p.m. with roast b e e f and turkey on the menu. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for young children. The team finished up th e ir tr a c k s e a s o n w ith numerous individual titles and all athletes placing during the season. The young M ustangs f in is h e d s tr o n g in te a m standings w ith the seventh grade girls capturing third p lace o ut o f n in e sch o o ls p articip atin g . T he seventh grade boys took fifth and the eighth grade boys fell short o f defending the 2002 team title by falling 115-129 to the Pilot Rock boys. Um atilla cam e in at third with 101 points. D uring this season, w hen the seventh and eighth grade bo y s’ team s com peted together at three m eets, they successfully captured team titles at Columbia, Pilot Rock a n d th e H e p p n e r - I o n e Invitational Meet in Pendleton. “ T h is w a s a v e ry challenging young group to coach. They improved rapidly e a c h w e e k a n d t h e ir enthusiasm and determination to be a com petitive athlete gained them m any rew ards throughout the short season,” said coach Susan Hisler. “ It’s alw ays a jo y for me to coach a t H e p p n e r,” H is le r a ls o added. B rendan M cE lligott brought in 31 points for the eighth grade boys team . He re -b ro k e h is n e w sc h o o l record in the 800m, setting the reco rd at 2 :16.95. H e had p re v io u s ly b ro k e n B ry an P a d b e rg ’s 2 :1 9 .7 8 re c o rd with a 2:18.7 run on April 11. He was also the cham pion in the 1500m w ith a tim e o f 5:53.4. H e placed second in the 400m with a time o f 58.99, which moved his to the top five a ll-tim e . M c E llig o tt a ls o participated in the triple jum p, placing sixth with a jum p total o f 30 feet 9'/2 inches. Bryson Wood had 25 points for the eighth grade team . He was the undefeated season champion in the 400m w ith a tim e o f 58.26, w hich m oved him into the top four all tim e list. He also placed third in the 200m at 26.43, fourth in the long jum p with 15 feet and 9 inches and fifth in the 100m at 12.97. Tony H aguew ood brought the team 19 points. He placed third in the high ju m p w ith a ju m p o f 5 feet 2 inches. He also placed fourth in the 300m hurdles at 51.13, fifth in the 100m hurdles at 18.76 and fifth in the 200m at 28.42. C a le b O ’N e a l brought 15 points to the team. He placed third in the 300m hurdles, fourth in the 100m hurdles at 17.67 and fifth in the high jum p at 5 feet 2 inches. Aaron Allstott had 14 points for the team . He was the cham pion in the shot put at 39 feet, which moved his to the top two all time list. He also p la c e d six th in the 100m hurdles at 18.78. Justin D elveaux had four points. Delveaux placed, seventh in the 800m . C olton H a n s o n h a d tw o p o in ts , placing seventh in the discus at 90 feet 11 inches. C asey O ’N eal and K ody Lovgren each brought in tw o points running in relays. T he 4 x 1 00m rela y team o f A llstott, D elveaux, Lovgren and C asey O ’Neal cam e in fifth. The 4x200m r e la y te a m o f L o v g r e n , Delveaux, Caleb O ’Neal and C asey O ’Neal also cam e in fifth. T he se v en th g rad e girls cam e in third, having six girls competing and placing. K elsey W olff had a lo n g ju m p o f 11 feet 1 X A inches. She placed fourth in the 400m at 1:20, sixth in high jum p and sixth in the 800m at 3:27. C yde Coil was the high ju m p cham pion at 4 feet 6 inches. She also placed a new school record in the javelin at 75 feet 5 inches. M egan O rr p lac e d second in the shot put at 26 feet m inches and second in the discus at 58 feet 9 inches. She also placed fifth in the 100m a n d 2 0 0 m . K y lie D oherty placed third in the high jum p with a jum p o f 4 feet 1 in c h . S h e a ls o p la c e d seventh in the discus at 52 feet. Kendra Rayburn placed fifth in the high ju m p and Baillie Keithley placed seventh in the 200m. C o il, D o h e rty , Rayburn and Keithley placed sixth in the 4x 100m relay. Jason Houweling placed third in the 1500m w ith a tim e o f 5:34.88. He also placed eighth in the 300m hurdles at 60.00 and seventh in the 800m at 2:51.11. N acho E lguezabal placed third in the discus at 87 feet 4 inches and fifth in the shot put at 29 feet 7 inches. The open house will be hosted by Louis C arlson and M ildred Carlson Hope at 625 South C hase Street in Heppner on Tuesday, May 27, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend. The Clinton and Sarah C arlson fam ily is hosting a fam ily reunion on M emorial Day weekend. Approximately 60 m em bers o f the family are expected to attend, including those traveling from Sweden.
