The Eagles scored on By Rick Paullus Echo and Moro a run in the sixth, but the lone Cardinal tennis team s hosted Echo on Tuesday, April 15. The lone ladies took tw o o f tw o matches and the lone men took one o f two matches. Caitlin Orem easily defeated Stacie Garcia, 8-0. Amanda Emery narrow ly defeated Heather Thomas, 8- 7. Tyler Raible lost to John M agana, 0-8, while Brian Bunch defeated Ruben Harris, 8-1. The lone tennis teams traveled to Moro on Friday, April 18. lone walked away w ith th ree w ins, w hile Sherman High School posted six wins. Orem had a 4-1 lead against Frankie Welk. Welk turned up the heat and had 6- 5 advantage before Orem finished the match with a strong 8-6 victory. Emery lost to a more experienced opponent, Tiffany Gray, 0-8. Meghan McCabe lost 2-8 to Sellah Hill. McCabe doubled up with Orem for a match, losing to Codi Stroud and Kristi Danielson, 2-8. Taylor M cElligott and Nate Rea defeated Brad Carlson and Shawn Bickler, 8-3. Mustang JVs outlast Vikings By Rick Paullus The H ep p n er Mustang JV baseball team outlasted the Umatilla Vikings 16-7 in a game in which the team s com bined for 24 strikeouts, 20 walks, 20 hits and five hit batters on Monday, April 14 in Umatilla. The Mustangs, now 7-2 on the year, host Stanfield on Friday, April 25 at 3 p.m., and travel to Stanfield on Monday, April 28. The Mustangs scored a run in the first when Luke Murray reached on a fielder’s choice and came around to score on a Trevor Rhea single, but the Vikings scored a run in the bottom half to tie it at 1 -1. In the second, Riley Wight singled, Cody Walton reached on an error, Dan Basile had a sac fly, Murray tripled to score a run and came home as Rhea reached on an error and Sloan Keithley drew ' a bases loaded walk to force in a run and make it 5-1. t They added three more in the third when Walton and Basile singled, Murray had an RBI double and Rhea reached on an error to score two more. The Vikings scored three in the fourth to get within 8-4, but the Mustangs got a run in the fifth when Matthew VanCleave walked and came around to score on a passed The H ep p n er Mustang varsity baseball team banged out 16 hits to beat the visiting Wahtonka Eagles 15- 2 on Tuesday, April 15. The Mustangs, now 7-3 on the year, have a key doubleheader at Pilot Rock on Saturday, A pril 26 and w ill be at Weston-McEwen on Tuesday, April 29 in Columbia Basin Conference play. The Mustangs took an early 2-0 lead when Josh Winters walked and Brad A dams hit a hom erun to centerfield in the first inning. They added a run in the second when Chuy Elguezabal singled and came around to score on a Winters single. In the third, Kyler Lovgren walked, Kory Paullus singled, Jode Coil had an RBI single and Elguezabal hit a sac fly to give the Mustangs a 6-0 lead. The Eagles scored a run in the top of the fourth, but the Mustangs came back with two more in the bottom half when Kiel Naims walked, Billy Gates singled, Donald Adams walked and Lovgren had a two RBI single. In the fifth , Brad Adams doubled and Gates hit a home run to left field to make The South Morrow Scholarship Trust is holding its third annual golftoumament on Saturday, May 3, starting at 9 a.m., at the Willow Creek Country Club. It will be a four- person team scramble. Cost is $45, including lunch. All funds will go for scholarships for graduating seniors of Heppner and lone schools. Come su p p o rt the stu d en ts o f Heppner and lone Schools and have a fun time in the p ro c e ss, said a tru st spokesperson. The co m m ittee is currently working to establish a large enough fund to replace the Troedson Scholarships w hen they run out. The rep lacem en t w ill be for Heppner and lone students only. American Legion and Auxiliary to hold meeting The American Legion and Auxiliary will meet April 28, at 7 p.m., in the Methodist Church basement. The Mustangs wrapped up the non-league portion of their season with a 9-3 record and will be at Pilot Rock for a Columbia Basin Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 26 at 11 a.m., and at Weston-McEwen on Tuesday, April 29 at 4:30 a.m. The Mustangs got on the board early in the first game when Josh Winters doubled and scored on Brad Adams’ homerun in the first inning. They added another in the second when Kory Paullus w alked and went to second on Kyler Lovgren’s sacrifice bunt and scored on a Jode Coil double. In the third, Brad Adams singled and went to second on a ground out by Billy Gates; then went to third on Donald Adams’ single and scored on a Josh Gutierrez bunt. The Mustangs added their fifth run in the fourth when Coil reached on an error, went to second on a C huy Elguezabal sac bunt and scored on Winters’ single. Elguezabal made the lead stand up as he went five innings, scattering three hits while striking out eight and an intentional walk and Gates pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Donald Adams went two for three with a double and Brad Adams went two for four with two RBI and scored twice.
