The Mustangs, 7-3 in the CBC and 11 -9 overall, will play at home against Umatilla on Friday, Feb. 14 before traveling to the eighth-ranked Sherman County Huskies on Saturday, Feb. 15, in Moro. The Mustangs did not suffer a let dow n from their big win over Weston-McEwen the night before as they came out hot in the first quarter taking a 17- 15 lead getting seven points from Stephanie Hanson and six from Tylynn Smith. Hanson had seven more points in the second quarter as the Mustangs increased their lead to 28-23 at the half. The Mustangs hit five of six free throws in the decisive third quarter and got six points from Lacey Matteson and four from Chelsea Britt as they held on through the fourth. They hit 10 o f 14 free throw s in the fourth quarter and 19 o f 26 for the game. Hanson, who hit six of eight shots in the first half, finished w ith 16 po in ts and eight rebounds. Matteson added 10 points, four assists and four rebounds. Jesse Kempas had 11 rebounds and two steals, Susan Southworth had seven rebounds and two steal and Britt had seven rebounds. Linsey Mitchell had five rebounds and Nikki Sisk had two steals. M ustang JV boys drop two By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang JV boys suffered through a tough weekend as they lost to the v isitin g W eston-M cEw en Tigerscots 42-34 on Friday, Feb. 7 and lost 53-42at Stanfield on Saturday, Feb. 8. The Mustangs now, 15-3 on the year, will try to get back on track as they face Umatilla at home on Friday, Feb. 14 and go on the road to Moro to face Sherman County on Saturday, Feb. 15. Against the Tigerscots, the teams were tied after one at 12-12 as Josh Gutierrez hit a 3- pointer and the Mustangs lead 19-17 at the half as Zach Skaggs had three points in the second. Kyler Lovgren had three points in the third but the Tigerscots opened up a 30-26 lead after three. Gutierrez had another 3-pointer in the fourth but the Mustangs could not overcome the deficit. Lovgren and Skaggs each had seven points with Gutierrez and Brian Haguewood each scoring six points. At Stanfield, the Tigers jumped out to a quick lead but Gutierrez had 1 - points in the first, including two 3-pointers to get the Mustangs to within 19-16 after one. Skaggs had four points in the second but the Tigers took a 28-23 lead into the half. The Tigers took a 43-31 lead after three and held the lead through the fourth to take the win. G u tierrez lead the Mustangs with 12 points, Skaggs had five points w ith Haguewood, Aaron Griffith and Gus Torres each scoring four points. Weston-McEwen 12 5 13 12-42 Heppner 12 7 7 8-34 The Heppner Mustang boys’ varsity outscored the Stanfield Tigers in each quarter in taking a 62-56 win in Stanfield on Saturday, Feb. 8 in Columbia Basin Conference action. The Mustangs, 7-3 in CBC and 14-6 overall, will play at home against Umatilla in a key CBC game on Friday, Feb. 14, before going on the road to Moro to face the Sherm an County Huskies on Saturday, Feb. 15. The Mustangs led 16-14 after one getting five points from Brad Adams, five points from Chuy Elguezabal, including a 3- pointer, and four points from Luke Murray, including a 3- pointer. Adams had five more points and Murray hit another 3- p o in ter in the second and Elguezabal hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Mustangs a 28- 25 lead at halftime. The Tigers scored first to open the th ird and after Elguezabal hit a jumper, they scored four straight to take a 31 - 30 lead. Brandon Seitz hit one o f two free throws and Adams converted a three-point play and Seitz scored off a rebound to give the Mustangs a 39-33 lead. Josh Winters hit a long jumper to make it 43-37, the Tigers hit a 3- pointer, Conor Kilkenny scored off a pass from Tanner Britt, the Tigers came back with another 3-pointer, but Elguezabal hit another 3-pointer at the buzzer W eston-McEwen: lead after three. The Tigers got to within two to open the fourth but Murray scored off a drive and Elguezabal hit a jumper to make it 52-46. The Tigers came back to get within one, but Adams scored twice inside off drives to make it 56-51, the Tigers scored but the Mustangs put the game away as Justin Botefuhr scored off a rebound and Elguezabal and Murray each hit two o f two free throws in the final minute to preserve the win. Elguezabal had 20 points and three assists, with Adams hitting nine o f 13 free throws, scoring 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds and Murray had 11 points, four assists and two steals. The Heppner Mustang “C” team jumped out to an 18-4 lead after one and never looked back beating the visiting Grant Union Prospectors 83-44 on Thursday, Feb. 6, to improve their record to 11 -2 on the year. The Mustangs play their final gam e at W eston-M cEw en, Thursday, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m. Kory Paullus had nine points in the Mustangs big first quarter with Josh Lankford and Matt Kenny each hitting 3- pointers and Kyle C arlson scoring three points. Mikel Britt had six points and Matthew VanCleave and Paullus each scored four points in the second as the Mustangs took a 36-23 lead at the half. The Mustangs increased their lead to 56-33 after three as Lankford had six points, including a 3-pointer, and Britt and Paullus each had four points. The Mustangs improved to 6-3 in the CBC and 13-6 overall with the win. The Mustangs led 4-2 early on a Brandon Seitz rebound basket and a Brad Adams drive and lay-in, but the Tigerscots came back to take an 8-5 lead after one. The Mustangs started fast in the second as Conor Kilkenny hit a 3-pointer, Luke Murray drove the lane for a lay- in and Adams hit three o f four free throws for a 13-8 lead, but the Tigerscots came right back with a 10-0 run to take an 18- 13 lead. Murray came back with two free throws and a runny jumper and Adams scored off a drive to give the mustangs a 19- 18 lead. Murray scored off a drive and after the Tigerscots tied the game at 21-21, Adams scored twice inside and Chuy Elguezabal completed a three- point play to end the second to five the Mustangs a 28-21 lead at the half The Tigerscots scored first to open the third but Seitz scored off a pass from Josh Winters, Adams scored twice inside and Elguezabal scored off th e fast break to five the Mustangs a 36-23 lead. The Tigerscots came back with a 12- 3 run before Justin Botefuhr hit a 3-pointer to make it 42-35, then the teams traded baskets as Murray hit a running jumper, BotefUhr scored off a pass from Donald Adams and M urray scored o ff a drive, but the Tigerscots were within 48-45 at the end of the third quarter. The M ustangs im proved th e ir Columbia Basin Conference record to 6-3 and their overall record to 10-9 with the win. The Tigerscots jumped out to a 6-1 lead but the M ustangs cam e back as Matteson fed Stefanie Hanson for a lay-in then hit a jumper and after a Tigerscot bucket, Tylynn Smith drove the lane for a lay-in, Matteson hit a long jumper then hit a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Mustangs a 12-8 lead after one. Madison Bailey drove for a lay-in to make it 14-10 but the Tigerscots went on a 12-2 run to take a 22-16 lead. Smith then hit one o f two free throws and scored off a pass from Matteson and Hanson scored off a rebound but the Tigerscots scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 26-21 lead at the half. The Tigerscots scored to get within two but Smith hit two free throws with 54 seconds left to make it 39-35 but back came the Tigerscots to get within one with 38 second left. Smith hit one o f two free throws, but the Tigerscots tied it with 20 second remaining and almost stole the ball with five seconds left but knocked the ball out o f bounds to give it back to the Mustangs. On the play, Bailey suffered a bad ankle injury and had to leave the game. Matteson took the inbounds pass and drove toward the basket, but when she was surrounded by Tigerscots she passed to Rust who put in the winning shot Matteson had 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Smith hit seven of 10 free throws for l l points, grabbed eight rebounds and had two assists. Hanson had seven points and four rebounds and Britt had six points and five rebounds.
