The M ustangs will be at U m atilla on Friday, Jan. 24 and will be at home on Saturday, Jan. 25 next up on their schedule. A gainst the Eagles the M ustangs took a 14-4 lead after one and got four second quarter points from Zach Skaggs in taking a 28-10 halftim e lead. The Mustangs increased their lead to 41-19 after three getting three points from Brian b Hague wood and coasted through the fourth getting six points from ^ G us Torres to get the easy win. W h ile participating in this meet he broke four school records and three state records. He participated in the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, the long jum p and the triple jum p. In the triple ju m p he w as ust 1/4" aw ay from breaking the m eet record. He was nam ed to the C lass 1A all-state first team basketball team. At the state East West All Star Football Gam e he was nam ed defensive player for the east and the m ost valuable player o f the gam e. He is the punter for the Eastern O regon University football team this past fell. Diana M cElligott competed at th e s ta te tr a c k a n d f ie ld championships w inning the 100- m eters for the third consecutive year, the 200 m eters for the second year in a row and ran the anchor leg on the 400 relay team and third place in the 400-meters. She is know n by her coaches as talented, confident and willing to listen. On the Cardinal volleyball team she was iastrumental in their making it to the state playoffs and taking home the 3rd place trophy. She received first-team Big Sky East volleyball recognition and was also nam ed to the first-team all-tournament squad at the state tournament. The M ustangs improved to 2-1 in the C B C and 9-4 overall. Both team s started o ff slow as B rad A dam s hit one o f two free throw s with 5:06 left in the first quarter for the first points for either team . The Eagles then scored seven straig h t before Adam s hit two more free throws and Luke M urray hit two o f four as the M ustangs trailed 7-5 after one. The M ustangs got to an 11-9 lead early in the second as C huy E lguezabal hit a short ju m p e r a n d fed A d am s and Murray for lay-ins, but the Eagles cam e back to take a 15-11 lead. E lguezabal hit a 3-pointer and Josh W inters had a steal and lay- in. to give the M ustangs a 16-15 lead, but the Eagles again cam e back w ith six straight to regain the lead. Winters hit a fade away ju m p e r and a 3-pointer to end the first h alf with the teams tied a 21 - 2 1 . T he team s w ere tied at 23-23 w hen Elguezabal hit a 3- pointer, Justin Botefuhr converted a three-point play, and Elguezabal fed A dam s and W inters for lay- ins to give the M ustangs a 33-23 lead. The Eagles came back with a run o f their ow n to tie it again, but A dam s scored off a rebound and E lg u ezab al hit tw o free throws and the Mustangs led 37- 35 after three. T he E agles hit a free throw s to get w ithin one but Adam s hit two free throws and a long jum per, W inters hit a 3- po in ter, A dam s scored o f f a baseline drive and hit a short jum per to make it 48-36 then fed Elguezabal for a lay-in to make it 50-38. Cardinal JV score a victory over Grizzlies The lone girls’ JV team beat the Helix girls’ JV 61 -4 6 to increase their w inning streak to four w ins in a row and their record to 7-5, Friday, Jan. 17. The Cardinals took a 44- 17 halftim e lead and despite being out scored by the Grizzlies 39-17 in the second h a lf they m anaged to hold on for the win.
