The South Shetland Islands, which are claimed by the U n ited K in g d o m , C h ile and Argentina, are all along the coast o f w hich continent? These are tw o o f the questions asked o f students o f Heppner Elementary School during the annual National Geographic Bee on Jan. 13. This com petition is sponsored each year to encourage interest among young in the geo g rap h y and peoples o f the world. HES students in grades four, five and six took a qualifying test in December, and as a result o f th at test, fo u rte en y o u n g geographers landed spots in the b e e . T h e s e c o n te s t a n t s a n s w e r geography questions “spelling bee style” which were asked by teacher Karen Smith-Grifilth. A fter the prelim inary rounds, six contestants remained. Spencer, M aggie, Joe, Taylor, Em ily and Dillon. At the end o f the final round o f questioning, Spencer and Maggie remained in th e c o m p e titio n . In th e cham pionship round, Spencer correctly identified the peso as the c u rren cy o f M exico and A rgentina which have the same name but different values. S p e n c e r r e c e iv e d a m e d a l fro m th e N a tio n a l G eographic Society, and took a written test that will determine if he m oves to the next level o f c o m p e titio n , th e S ta te Geography Bee. Riney-Olsen Cardinals overtake Falcons in overtime win The lone G irls Varsity laced the W heeler Falcons Girls Varsity in their first Big Sky league gam e, Friday, Jan. 10. N either team was able to score in the first quarter as shot after shot bounced o ff o f the rim and as the b e g in n in g o f the second quarter started the score stood at 4-2 in the Falcons favor. The Cardinals then picked up the pace and rallied to a 19-13 h a lf time lead. In the second h a lf the Falcons slow ly crept tow ards lo n e ’s lead and at the end o f regular tim e the score w as tied at 3 4 -3 4 and th e g am e w as heading into overtime. D e s p ite h a v in g tw o s p r a in e d a n k le s , N a ta lie McEUigott scored 26 points for the Cardinals during the first four quarters. The Cardinals looked to McEUigott in over time to carry them to the win as she scored all five o f the C ardinals’ overtim e points. G r e a t d e f e n s e fro m Diana McEUigott and Emily Key stopped the Falcons all game long an d th a t d id n o t c h a n g e in overtime as they held the Falcons to ju s t one p o in t g iv in g th e Cardinals a 39-35 win. T he C ardinals had 25 steals for the gam e and 10 o f those came from Emily Key who also had four assists. D ianna McEUigott had six points going four o f four from the free throw line. Cardinal JVs handed loss by Blue Devils lone JV girls defeat Umatilla Katie Riney and Mike Olsen M ike Olsen and Katie Riney have announced their plans to be m arried at a M ay 3, 2003 cerem ony at the U nited Church o f Christ in Condon. The bride-elect is the daughter o f D ave and Sara Riney o f C ondon, and the parents o f the groom -to-be are Rick and Eudora O lsen o f Rock Creek. G randparents o f the couple are Jiggs and Rita Bowman and Al and Linda Riney, all o f Heppner and Peggy Dean Riney ofCondon, and Carroll Olsen ofO lex. The couple is currently living in Albany. Riney is employed as a dental assistant in Salem and Olsen works as a pipe fitter for Advance Mechanical. Cardinals bring down a win over Blue Devils in the fourth, sealing the victory T he lone Boys Varsity im proved their Big Sky league record to 2-2 after winning their second straight gam e in a row against the C ondon Blue Devils 57-50, Saturday, Jan. 18. The ( animals again used their running gam e early to take an 30-22 first h alf lead. The Blue Devils held lone to just six third- quarter points to cut lone’s lead to just tw o points. Not wanting a loss, lone put out a strong fourth quarter effort gaining 21 points over the Blue Devils. Tyler B row n scored 22 points, going four for four from th e fre e th ro w lin e . Cardinals see victory against Grizzles The lone Boys Varsity show ed they still believed they c o u ld m ak e a run a d istric t p l a y o f f s as th ey forced the tempo early in their game against the Helix Grizzlies giving them a 37-28 lead at halftim e, Friday, Jan. 17. T he G rizzlies how ever w ould rally back to within four points at the end o f the third quarter but that w as as close as they w ould get as the Cardinals outscored Helix 28- 25 taking a 77-70 victory. Tyler Brown had a game high with 21 points, while Kelly T hom pson added 17 and Carl M organ brought in 16 points. Cayle Krebs scored eight points and Andrew Rietmann put up six points going 100 percent from the charity stripe. Billy Gates sank ~ two 3-pointers for his six points and M ike R adie added three points.
