Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, January 8, 2003 - FIVÊ Lady Cards burst out with a 34-point win over the Tigers The lone Lady Cardinals outscored the Stanfield Tigers by 34 points, to bring in a win on Friday, Jan. 3. A fter being down by three follow ing the first quarter, the lone varsity girls looked to Emily Key and Tracy Griffith to take them to a 31-25 lead at halftime, against the Stanfield girls. Excellent defense in the second half accounted for 24 steals and the Cardinals exploded on offense outscoring the Tigers 43-15 in the half, to win the game 74-40. Barbara Holland had a game high o f 16 points. Natalie McElligott put up 13 and Diana McElligott hit nine. Tracy Griffith threw down seven points, with Caitlin Orem chipping in six. Emily Key, Sara Peck and Ashly Grams both had four and Missy Baker added one point. lone JV girls take a win over Stanfield The lone JV girls trailed for three o f the four quarters against the Stanfield Tigers J V girls, Friday, Jan. 3, but a huge 3-pointer by Ashly Grams gave lone the lead with 3:33 left in the game, and they never looked back from there going on to win the game 32-28 despite being 7 o f 19 from the free throw line. Ashly Grams scored 13 points overall, Emily Key and Missy Baker both had six, Eva Chitty chipped in five and Abby Key added two points. Too many turnovers cause lone’s JV boys ’ loss against Rockets Twenty-two turnovers explained a lot, as the lone Cardinal’s boys’ J V lost to Pilot Rocks’JV team, Saturday, Jan. 4. D e sp ite th e 60-41 defeat, the C ardinals have a second half to be proud o f as they m anaged to out rebound the Rockets 14-3 on the offensive g lass. In th e first h a lf th e Cardinals’ had only managed to pull down two to the Rockets 13. Cardinal boys lose to Pilot Rock The score stood at 37- 13, com ing out to start the second half. The Cardinals rallied to w ithin 11, but that was as close as they would get despite all their efforts. Tyler Raible had a team hig h o f 12 p o in ts. C u rtis Thompson had nine points and Dan Satterly had seven. Kelly Thompson and Arthur Ekstrom each added six p o in ts and Nathan Rae added one point. Lady Cardinals end non-league play with a loss Cardinal JV boys lose to Tigers The Cardinal JV boys went up against the Stanfield Tigers, Friday, Jan. 3, but were unable to gain a win, losing 70- 34. At the end o f the first half, the Cardinal where down just 11 points despite the hot shooting ofTigers and looked as if they might be able to catch up. However, the Cardinals ju st could not get the ball to drop against the tight defense and only managed to score 13 second- half points to the Tigers 38. Dan Satterly and Tyler Raible lead the Cardinals with eight points each. Arthur Ekstrom put up five; Kelly and Curtis T h o m p so n b o th had four, followed by Brian Bunch with three and Gene Ball with two. Billy Gates plays defense against the Rockets The lone varsity boys knew they were facing what could be one o f the top 2A teams around, as they entered into game p lay a g a in s t P ilo t R ock, Saturday, Jan. 4. Nervousness showed as the Cardinals came out and ended up trailing Pilot Rock, 31 -20 at the half. O nce th e C a rd in a ls settled down they managed to m atch the Rockets 31-point second-half performance, but the 11-point lead established at the beginning o f the gam e was mirrored in the final 62-51 score. At the end o f the third quarter the Cardinals where 20 points down and gave it one last effort outscoring the rockets 18- 7 in the forth but could not overcome the earlier deficit. The Cardinals struggled to score from inside, and added 21 points from behind the three-point line. By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang JV boys ju m p ed out quick against the Hood River Valley frosh, led 38-13 at the half, and coasted to a 65-28 win in Hood River on Saturday, Dec. 28. The Mustangs got eight points from Brian Smith and four from Aaron Griffith as they took a 16-8 lead after one and five points from Brian Haguewood, four points from Josh Gutierrez, three points from Tyler Boyer and a 3-pointer from Jode Coil as they outscored the Eagles 22- 5 in the second quarter. The Mustangs extended their lead to 47-20 after three getting three points from Judd Lemmon and seven points from Eric Torres, five from Griffith and four more from Haguewood as they coasted through the fourth for the easy win. The Cardinals record stands at 2-8 on the year, as they prepare to face W heeler and Echo, Jan. 10-11, in their first league games. The sun was shining and everyone was ready to start shooting. The scores did not show any sign o f dropping despite the lengthy layoff. Harvey Childers, Mark Schlitching, Sandi Day and Chance Day all shot 23 o f 25 at the 16-yard line. The 20-yard handicap shoot got the better o f the sh o o ters though. Barry Munkers had the only gun to break into the 20s, w ith a 22 o f 25. Curt Day won the only Annie Oakley event. MCGC will shoot every S unday b eg in n in g at noon through April. League shooting begins this month, which will also include night shoots. Those w anting to compete in the league need to be signed up by Sunday, Jan. 12, but will continue until April. Shooters will need to register seven scores in that time. Also planned for the 2003 season will be at least two m eat sh o o ts and som e competition shoots with other surrounding gun clubs. There will be a members’ club meeting on Sunday, Jan. 19 for all MCGC members.
