The church will have its annual Sunday School Christmas Program on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 11 a.m. This year there will be three different short presentations. The preschool and younger elem entary-aged children will portray the traditional Biblical account o f Jesus’ birth. Another group o f children will act a skit entitled “Stable Party”, and the teenagers will perform a one act play called “That Special Love”. Interspersed in the program will be special m usic num bers which include harp, flute, violins and the children singing. There will also be a Christmas Eve Service on Tuesday Dec, 24 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Special music and meditations will focus on “the joy and significance o f Christ's birth.” Everyone is w elcom e to attend these services. For taxpayers filing joint returns, the measure increases the rate o f tax on taxable incom e o f m ore than $ 12,900 from 9 percent to 9.5 percent. For corporations, the rate would increase from 6.6 percent to 6.93 percent. T h e in c r e a s e d ra te s w ould apply to taxable incom e earned in the 2002, 2003 and 2004 tax years. The existing tax rate w ould be restored for 2005 and later tax years. Since the law went into effect Jan. 1, 2002, it has extended protection from second-hand smoke to an additional 500,000 people throughout the state who were not already covered by local or voluntary policies banning smoking indoors. O re g o n ’s S m o k e fre e Workplace law requires alm ost all em ployers to ensure their workplaces are smoke free and display “No Sm oking” signs. E xceptions include bars and taverns, bingo parlors, tobacco stores, bowling alleys and hotel and motel rooms designated as smoking rooms. Smokefree workplaces m ake good business sense: 79 percent o f O regonians d o n ’t smoke. -89 percent o f adults said they w ould go out to bars as frequently or more frequently if smoking were banned in bars.
