The Cardinals opened the g am e h ittin g tw o three- pointers, but Luke M urray hit a long jumper, Brian Smith hit two free th ro w s th en fed C huy Elguezabal for a lay-in, Connor K ilkenny scored o ff a rebound and Brian Hague wood hit a short ju m p er to give the M ustangs a 10-7 lead. Another three-pointer by the C a rd in a ls tied it up, Elguezabal scored off a drive but the Cardinals scored to tie it 12- 12 after one. Brad Adam s scored off' a pass from Justin B otefuhr to open the second, Elguezabal scored from Botefuhr, Adam s fed M urray and Tanner Britt for lay-ins, hit a running jum per and added tw o free throw s to make it 24-19 but the Cardinals got back to w ithin one. The teams traded baskets as Britt hit a baseline jum per, Josh Winters scored o ff a pass from Kilkenny and H a g u e w o o d hit a short jum per as the M ustangs took a 46-37 lead after three. A C ardinal three-pointer pulled them to within six to open the fourth but the Mustangs went on a 15-0 run to put the gam e aw ay. The Cardinals scored the final seven points to m ake the ending score 61-47. Elguezabal hit six o f 11 shots to finish w ith 15 points, had four assists and three steals with Botefuhr hitting five o f six shots for 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. A dam s hit four o f seven shots for nine p oints, grabbed nine rebounds and had three assists. Kilkenny had seven points and six rebounds and Smith grabbed seven rebounds. Chelsea Britt and Tylynn Smith going for the rebound By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang g irls ’ varsity opened their season with a 54-40 win over the lone Cardinals in lone on Tuesday, Dec. 3 using a 15-4 advantage in the third quarter to pull away. The Mustangs took an early 8-2 lead and eventually led 13-9 after one but the C ardinals cam e back to take a 21 -16 lead midway through the second. Stefanie Hanson scored on a pass from Shanna Rietmann and Lacey Matteson hit a turn around jum per to get the Mustangs to w ithin one, the Cardinals cam e back w ith a basket, Rietmann hit two free throws and after another lone basket M atteson hit another jum per and Rietm ann hit a th re e -p o in te r to g iv e th e M ustangs a 27-25 lead at halftime. M atteson scored five m ore points, H anson hit a three-pointer and Chelsea Britt h it a sh o rt ju m p e r as the M ustangs extended their lead to 42-29 after three. The Mustangs kept up the pressure as Brooke Rust s c o re d o f f a d riv e a n d Rietmann scored offa steal and assist from M adison Bailey. The C ardinals cut the lead to 48-36 but Susan Southworth scored on a break on a pass from Hanson and Matteson hit a running ju m p er to put the game away. R on Paullus takes the basketball in for a lav-in By Rick Paullus After a tight first quarter, the Heppner M ustang boys “C” team ran away from the Umatilla Vikings 66-44 in the first game o f th e y e a r in U m a tilla on Thursday, Dec. 5. The M ustangs will play at Mac-Hi on Thursday, Dec. 12 and will host Stanfield at 5:30 p.m. on M onday, Dec. 16 for their next games. The team s were tied at 12-12 after one as the Mustangs Roy Proctor scored five points including a three-pointer. The M ustangs took a 32-27 lead at halftime getting four points each fro m R o ry K ilk e n n y and M atthew VanCleave and three points each from Mikel Britt and Kory Paullus. They extended their lead to 48-38 after three getting six points from Paullus and four each fro m M a tt K e n n y an d V a n C le a v e . T he M u s ta n g s coasted to the win as Proctor hit tw o m ore three-pointers and Kilkenny scored four points in the fourth quarter. Paullus led a balanced scoring effort with 13 points, w hile Proctor added 11, including three three-pointers. VanCleave had 10 points, Kilkenny nine and Kenny had eight points. A th letic director Dean Robinson passed out pins to the girls’ volleyball team for placing second in the state for 1A schools with a 3.82 GPA. The boys' football team received pins for placing second in com bined 1A and 2A level schools in the state with a 3.50 GPA. Diana M cElligott and M ike R adie, W endy’s H igh School Heisman Award winners, received bronze m edals from principal Mike Stuart. McElligott also received a silver m edal for being a state w inner. Cardinal football coach Dale H olland thanked all the people w ho helped m ake the football season a success. He read a farewell letter from senior m anager Cody Bergstrom who c o u ld n 't a tte n d th e a w a rd s program . The team signed a football to present to Bergstrom. Players receiving awards were: Most Improved- Austin Arballo; M o st I n s p ir a tio n a l-A s h le y Roberts; Big Stick Award for incredible offense and defense- Cayle Krebs; and Most Valuable Player-Andrew Rietmann. Coach McElligott noted several school volleyball records w ere broken this year: Diana M cElligott-points scored (231) and kills (252); N atalie M cElligott-blocks (165); and M eghan M cC abe-sets (801). E n te rp rise o u tsc o re d lone 18-4 in the third quarter, but lone cam e back and outscored lone 13-8 in the fourth. “We had a meltdown in the third but never gave up. I was real proud o f th em ,” added Swanson. Tyler Raible led the team with 12 points followed by Dan Satterly with nine points on three three-pointers.
