This is their 26th annual event; a great time for many folks to begin thinking about letting go o f tobacco’s grip. Put that cash you would have spent, toward a special Christmas gift (in addition to your longer life). I can guarantee you will have a fantastic sense o f accomplishment come New Year’s Day. Perhaps some o f you saw the Nov. 14 Oregonian article: “Study sees inflammation as key heart attack cause.’’ “Significant new research suggests inflammatory proteins within the body play a bigger role than cholesterol.” The study involved 28,000 women and it found that those with high levels o f the inflammatory protein were twice as likely as those with high cholesterol to die o f heart attacks and strokes. The sources o f this interior, sometimes painless, inflammation is still under study. The good news is that people can significantly lower their inflammatory protein levels by even modest improvements in their living habits such as exercising, controlling their diet, controlling blood pressure and giving up tobacco use. This next item is from a data analysis by Dr. Mark Schuster and colleagues from UCLA, reported by Reuters Health and published in the November issue o f the Archives o f Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. “More than 20 million U.S. children are exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes, raising their risk for asthma, hospitalizations and missed days o f school...” Strangely, it’s just not the children o f smokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke. Some nonsmokers with children said they allowed other residents or visitors to smoke in their homes. Could this be fellow apartment dwellers, or relatives who come to visit? Could it be that nonsmokers felt uncomfortable requesting them to step outside to smoke for fear o f offending? With the holidays coming and visits to family and friends, let us consider the health o f all o f our children.
