Do you remember those cartoons in the paper; you know the ones w ith the boy and girl w ho are in the buff and the caption above says “Happiness is...” followed by a cute little phrase at the bottom of the cartoon that just kind of makes one feel good inside? That is how worshipping on Sunday makes me feel all week. 1 know that it is impossible to feel happy and joyful all the time and even if you did feel that way all the time people would begin to think you “just weren’t right in the head.” Because let’s face it, life isn’t always a happy and joyous experience. We all face difficult challenges in our lives and times that seem impossible to hurdle. There are times in all of our lives that seem as if we are all alone and that no one really cares about us. However, being a member of a worshipping community helps me realize that 1 am never alone. Prior to joining the Lutheran church in Dallas, OR, I thought that the only person who would watch out for me was myself. However, once 1 began attending Sunday worship services 1 began to slowly realize that 1 am never alone and that God has always been and is present in my life. From that point on, the feeling of isolation and loneliness began to slip way. Granted, the void never 100 percent disappears because every now and then we all have to feel sorry for ourselves from time to time - Right? Once it began to sink into my thick skull through attending worship that God is always present in my life I began to look around and see through whom God was and is working. God doesn’t just sit back and passively work in our lives - No. God actually works through other people. For you see, soon 1 began to be a member of a community that was searching for the same things in life - love, acceptance and forgiveness and all of these gifts 1 found by going to church on Sunday mornings. Worship is what keeps me grounded in life. I also know for a fact that walking into a church for the first time is one o f the most difficult challenges a person can encounter. I realize that the first Sunday 1 walked through the church door I was scared to death. The worshipping community o f Hope and Valby Lutheran church and All Saints Episcopal church know how hard it is to walk into a new setting with all new people therefore, our shared ministry is starting a 5:30 p.m., Saturday night service, beginning on Oct. 5, at All Saints Episcopal church in Heppner. The Saturday night serv ice is for those seeking information about their spirituality and the Christian faith. The Episcopal-Lutheran shared ministry of Heppner and lone want to share the experience of worship and fellowship. All Saints, Hope and Valby invite everyone to join them on Saturday nights. Site councils explained by Debbie Harper Have you ever wondered what a school site council is, and why you should care? Site councils are state mandated groups. Their primary purpose is to improve student learning at the school. The state has outlined their goals as the development of plans to improve the professional growth o f the school staff, the improvement of the school’s instructional program, the development and coordination of plans for implementing these programs and the administration o f g ran ts-in -aid for the professional developm ent o f teachers and classified district employees. In practical terms, that m eans teachers and parents working together to development and implement programs to create as fully rounded a curriculum for their school as possible. They are not a fund raising body. They are a research and developm ent group. The council generates ideas or people bring ideas to the council. Those ideas are discussed and research ed by the council members, and then presented to the principal and the school board. Wade Smith, Heppner schools principal, describes the group as parents and teachers working together to make schools a better place for students. “It’s a chance for teachers to tell what they’re teaching and parents to input what they want children to learn,” he said. The meetings are open to the public and Smith would like to see more people attending. The m ore ideas generated the better for the schools. lo n e ’s site council is working on the second year of their school wide plan, and on improving reading scores. Parent mem bers must have a student attending the school. C urrently, H eppner Elementary School is looking for two parent members and Heppner High School is looking for three, lone has a full membership at this time. Members serve a three-year term, with a one hour meeting a m onth. Interested H eppner parents may call Smith for more information. HES site council meets the first Monday of each month, HHS the second Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the library and lone the second Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the high school library.
