Defense keys Mustangs win over Cobras
By Rick Paullus
Led by inside linebackers
Donald and Brad Adams, the
Heppner Mustangs shut out the
visiting Central Linn Cobras, 26-
0, in the first football game of the
year on Friday, Aug. 30. The
Mustangs, controlling play for
most of the game, held the Co
bras to 38 yards rushing and 91
yards passing, 50 o f which came
on one play late in the game.
The Mustangs will host
Vernonia on Friday, Sept. 6, in
another non-league game. Ver
nonia was to play The Dalles on
that night; however, Wahtonka is
not playing a varsity schedule this
year, so the Mustangs will have a
bye on the week of Oct. 4, when
they were to have played the Ea
gles.
The Cobras kicked off to
open the game with the Mustangs
taking over at their own 29. Brad
Adams ran for three. Tanner Britt
hit Kyle Lovgren for nine and a
first down, Tyler Boyer picked up
seven and Britt ran for four more
and another first down at the Cen
tral Linn 49. Adams ran for four,
Lovgren lost two and Britt hit
Chuy Elguezabal for six to bring
up fourth down; however, the
Cobras jumped offsides to give
the Mustangs a first down at the
37 yard line. Adams ran three
times for 14 yards, Boyer picked
up four, Elguezabal caught a short
pass from Britt for four yards,
then ran 14 yards for the Mus
tangs first touchdown of the year.
A bobbled snap on the extra point
attempt resulted in a 6-0 Heppner
'lead after one quarter of play.
The teams traded pos
sessions, then the Mustangs held
'on fourth down to take over at the
Cobra 44 yard line. Britt hit
Adams for 20 yards, then shuf
fled a pass to Lovgren who took
it in from 24 yards out for the
touchdown. The two-point con
version try failed, so the Mus
tangs led 12-0 with 8:41 left in the
first half.
Donald Adams recov
ered a fumble at the Cobra 48,
but the Mustangs gave it back on
an interception at the 10-yard line.
The H eppner defense
held and after a bad snap on the
punt, the Mustangs took over at
the 18 o f Central Linn. After an
offsides penalty, Elguezabal ran
for 10 yards and a first down at
the three. Boyer took it inside the
one and Britt punched it in for the
touchdown. Elguezabal kicked the
extra point to make it 19-0 at half
time.
»
The Cobras took the sec
ond half kickoff and were mov
in g the ball until Jode Coil rushed
Tin from his comerback position
and sacked the quarter for a 12-
yard loss. Elguezabal returned the
punt to the Central Linn 45, but
the Mustangs gave it right back
on a fumble.

The two team s traded
possessions through the third
quarter. Early in the fourth Adam
Bergstrom had a sack for a 12-
yard loss to force a punt, which
Boyer returned 21 yards to the
Cobras’ 48-yard line.
On third and nine,
Lovgren broke free for 15 yards
and a first down at the 31. Adams
ran for nine, Lovgren picked up
two more and another first down,
Adams ran for three more; the
Cobras jumped offsides and Britt
hit Lovgren in the flat for five
yards and a first down at the sev
en. Adams ran for two, and, after
another offsides on Central Linn,
went for three more yards and the
final touchdown. Elguezabal’s
kick was good to make it 26-0 with
4:26 left in the game.
The Cobras drove to the
Mustangs 10, but Justin Botefuhr
intercepted a pass at the goal line
and returned it to the 28-yard line.
The Mustangs emptied
the bench and were unable to
move the ball, but Brian Smith
recovered a fumble on the punt
at the Mustang 37 yard line. Af
ter giving the ball back on a fum
ble, Smith sacked the quarterback
for a 15-yard loss to run out the
clock.
Brad A dam s finished
with 25 defensive points, includ
ing five tackles for losses, with
Donald Adams getting 19 defen
sive points, including a fumble re
covery. Elguezabal had 15 defen
sive points, including a fumble re
covery, while Coil and Botefuhr
each had 14 points and Smith had
eight points.
Brad A dam s finished
with 77 yards on 17 carries and
caught two passes for 22 yards.
Elguezabal rushed twice for 24
yards and caught three passes for
17 yards. Lovgren ran four times
for 17 yards and caught three
passes for 38 yards. Boyer ran
five times for 22 yards.
Britt hit nine of 15 pass
es for 85 yards and a touchdown.
He had one interception.

Hermiston, where he did land
surveys on a contract basis.
In Heppner, Cooley will
be helping work on the “buffer
initiative." He will be working
with private landowners to make
sure there is a proper buffer
around river, lakes, streams and
other bodies o f water. He said
that one goal is to ensure that
there is proper vegetation around
these areas. “Vegetation helps the
soil and shades the water,” said
Cooley. Also, the trees and shrubs
provide an area for wildlife, as
well as provide food for fish.
Cooley and his wife of
one year are in the process of
m oving to H eppner from
Hermiston.
W hen not w orking,
Cooley enjoys golfing, fishing and
hunting, and spending time with
friends. He and his wife also enjoy
singing in a quartet with two of
their friends.
Cooley says he likes the
area and is excited about the job.
