To be a person of good character, youth must develop strengths of the 4 “H’s”: head - they must know what is good; heart - they must desire to do the good; hands - they must be willing to do good; and health - they must develop a lifestyle that supports the desire and willingness to do good. The Morrow County 4-H program strives to develop good character in 4-H members. This D eclaration has becom e the cornerstone for the character development education programs in the United States. The Aspen Declaration states: 1. The next generation will be the stewards of the world. 2. The well being o f society needs citizens with good character. 3. People do not automatically develop good m oral character. Children must be taught so that they develop the values and ab ilities necessary for moral decision making and conduct. 4. Character education is based on core ethical values - p illars of ch aracter developm ent - trustworthiness, respect for others, responsibility, fairness. On Tuesday night, Aug. 13, JimnAlan will be performing free to the public starting at 7 p.m. The perform ance is sponsored by Wheatland Insurance. These core values transcend cultural, religious, and socio economic differences. 6. Although character education is first and forem ost an o b lig atio n of faith communities, the community in general, schools, and youth and fam ily serving org an izatio n s are also responsible. 7. Youth have a better chance of learning moral values if all groups work together to teach and reinforce moral values. 8. E very adult m ust take responsibility to model and teach the pillars o f character development. You can see, that although this D eclaration was only developed in 1992, 4-H, as the youth program of the land-grant U n iv ersities (O regon State University) has been using similar guidelines for the past 75 years! The Morrow County Fair is looking for new exhibitors. Pick up a M orrow C ounty Fair Prem ium Book and jo in the crowd. Be a part o f the Fair’s theme, “Discover The Centennial Spirit”. All exhibitors need to do is go to the Fair Office, pick up an exhibitor num ber and a premium sheet and then bring the items to the various departments on Monday, Aug. 12, from 1-8 p.m. For more information, call the Fair Office at 676-9474. With the recent addition of guitarist James “Fester” Read, the music selections slide easily into the influences of Bob Wills, Gene Autry and The Sons of the Pioneer, to pop ballads from the 40s and 50s. Acoustic guitars, upright bass, banjo, lots o f humor and big harmonies make The JimnAlan Show an act to entertain not only the “Boomers” but also the new generation of young people. Also on Tuesday night, from 6-8 p.m., Kessler’s will be there to serve a “p re-fair” dinner. Adults will receive 1/4 chicken, barbecue beans, coleslaw, potato salad, fruit salad, pickles and bread. Kids will get a beef rib or chicken, barbecue beans, coleslaw, potato salad, fruit salad, pickles and bread. Meal tickets are available in advance at the Morrow County Fair Office or may be purchased at the dinner. The price for an adult meal is $8, and for children under 12, it is $4.
