They lost to the Westside Christian Eagles, 71 -50, on Tuesday, Feb. 26, and to the Joseph Eagles, 74-64, on Wednesday, Feb. 27, to end the year with a fine 20 and 4 record. Six Mustangs played their final game as seniors. Michael McCabe, Stefan Matheny, David Norton, Brian Rust, Kevin Drake and Sam VanLiew ended their high school careers that started with Colt basketball. The team was coached by Chuck Matteson. The Mustangs stayed with W estside C hristian early as M ichael McCabe fed David Norton for a lay-in and made four free throws for a 6-6 tie, but the Eagles scored nine straight before Brad Adams scored on a rebound basket to end the first with the Eagles leading, 15-8. Brian Rust made two free throws to open the second, but the Eagles scored six straight to increase their lead to 21 - 10 . M cCabe scored o ff 9 drive, Norton hit a free throw and Kevin Drake hit a three-pointer to get the Mustangs within 23-16, but the Mustangs scored five straight points. Stefan Matheny scored, but the Eagles took a 30-18 lead into the locker room. The Mustangs hit seven of eight free throws in the first half, but the Eagles were better, hitting 12 of 13 from the charity stripe. The Eagles came out flying in the third as the Mustangs got a lay-in from McCabe but fell behind, 46-20, before Matheny hit a three-pointer. Norton converted a three point play and scored off a rebound to close out the third with the Eagles leading, 48-28. McCabe hit a baseline jumper to open the fourth, Rust hit a jumper and Matheny made one of two free throws and a three- pointer, but the Eagles still led. 54- 36. McCabe hit a jumper, Drake hit a three-pointer, Matheny hit a running jumper and Rust scored off a steal by McCabe to make it 62-45 and McCabe hit a three- pointer to get the Mustangs within 64-48 with 3:00 left. The Eagles came back with four straight points. Brian Smith scored off a rebound and the Eagles hit a three-pointer to close out the scoring. McCabe finished with 15 points, while Matheny added 11 points and five steals. Norton had eight points, six rebounds and two assists. Rust had six points, five rebounds and two assists. Drake hit both three-point attempts for six points. Adams had nine rebounds, Seven o f them offensive. The Mustangs hit nine of 11 free throws for the game, but the Eagles hit 19 of 22. Three-pointers: Matheny (2), Drake (2), McCabe. The Mustangs dominated the game against Joseph at times in the first half, but couldn’t keep their lead in the fourth quarter. Norton got the Mustangs on the board by hitting a short jumper then Matheny hit a three-pointer, Norton hit a baseline jumper and Matheny hit one o f two free throws to make it 8-2 early. Norton hit a short jumper off a drive but the Eagles came back to get within 10-8 before Matheny scored off a drive and McCabe hit a short jumper. McCabe scored off a drive and Adams hit a lay- in, but a three point play by the Eagles narrowed the lead to 18- 12 after one. Norton scored o ff a pass from McCabe, Matheny got a steal and lay-in, Norton scored off a drive and Rust hit a running jumper to make it 26-14. McCabe hit two free throws and Norton hit one of two but the Eagles came back to get within 29-22. Norton hit a lay-in and Matheny hit a running jumper to make it 33-22. McCabe scored off a pass from Rust then fed Norton for a lay-in to give the Mustangs a 37-28 lead at halftime. Joseph scored four straight to open the third before the teams began trading baskets as Adams scored off a long pass, Norton scored off a drive and Adams scored off a pass from Matheny to make it 43-36. Rust hit one of two free throws, Norton got a steal and lay-in, Matheny scored off a drive and McCabe drove the lane for a lay-in but the Eagles hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to narrow the Mustangs’ lead to 52- 48 going into the fourth. The Eagles scored for first five points of the fourth to take a 5 3 - 52 lead before M atheny scored to give the Mustangs back the lead. The Eagles came back with four straight before Matheny hit one of two free throws and Norton hit a short jumper off a drive to tie it at 57-57 with 4:30 left. The Eagles took a three point lead but Drake came back with a three point play to tie it again at 60-60 with 3:37 left. After an Eagle basket, McCabe tied it up again with a drive and lay-in and after two free throws by Joseph, Norton hit one of two free throws to make it 64-63 with 2:10 left. The Eagles then outscored the Mustangs, 10-1, down the stretch to take the win. Norton hit 11 of 14 shots for 24 points, pulled down six rebounds, had three steals and two blocked shots. Matheny added 15 points, three assists and two steals. McCabe was also in double figures, with 12 points, four rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Rust had seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Adams hit all thret^ of his shots for six points. The Mustangs hit only nine of 22 free throws compared to 25 of 34 for the Eagles, who also out- rebounded the Mustangs 40 to 25. Local AAU team takes first in tournament Leonard Foundation to award scholarships Symphony, Singers to Perform on St. Patrick’s Day The Willow Creek Sy mphony and the Willow Creek Singers will perform on Sunday, March 17, at 3 p.m. at the Heppner Elementary School gym. The concert is free to the public and is sponsored by the Morrow County Unified Recreation District. It is also supported by donations from the Morrow County Commission on C hildren and Fam ilies, the Herbert A. Templeton Foundation and Central Red Apple Market. Rick, who lives in Heppner, has decided to donate his cut hair to the Locks of Love organization and he’s auctioning off the cutting privilege to the highest bidder at the annual St. Patrick's auction Friday, March 15, at 7 p.m. Half the money from the winning donation w ill be given to Locks of Love and half to the St. P atrick’s auction. Kay Fowler, auction co-chair and owner and operator of the Hair Expressions hair salon, will braid the hair and the winner can cut it. Then he or she gets to have the clippers and style Rick’s shorn locks in any way they see fit. He has agreed to wear the results the rest of the evening. Rick decided to cut his hair be cause he wanted to help a friend quit smoking. Rick agreed if his friend, Dave Peterson of Ruggs, would quit, Rick would cut the hair he’d been growing for over four years. The friend has been smoke free for over five weeks now . Rick said that Locks of Love seemed a good place for the hair. Locks of Love is a non-profit or ganization that provides hair pieces to children in need who have lost their hair from long-term medical treatm ent. Several people in Heppner have already donated their hair. People want ing more information about Locks o f Love can find it on-line at www.locksofiove.org. Troedson Grant Scholarship and former Troedson Grant Scholarship recipients. Applications are available for high school seniors through the counselors at Heppner High School, lone High School and Riverside High School. Applications are available for form er Troedson G rant Scholarship recipients through the School D istrict O ffice in Lexington. Deadline for application m aterials to be returned is Friday, April 19. Contact the above listed schools for scholarship information. The Red and Gena Leonard Foundation will award scholarships to students who have graduated or obtained a GED from Arlington, Boardman, Condon. Echo, Fossil, Heppner, Hermiston, lone. Monument, Pendleton. Pilot Rock. Spray, Stanfield, Ukiah or Umatilla high schools. Students must attend an accredited college, university, community college, vocational, trade or technical program based in Oregon. It is the intent of the Red and Gena Leonard Foundation to benefit average students of good character with poor financial circumstances w ho have a desire to seek further educational opportunities, but due to their lack of scholastic performance, their ability to receive scholarships may be limited. In the selection process, priority w ill be given to students who are not at the top academ ically; have limited financial resources; show the ability to be or become upstanding citizens; and have an interest in a blue-collar trade. The Red and Gena Leonard Foundation awarded scholarships to 19 local area students totaling $38,000 for the 2001-2002 academic year.
