Mustangs roll to tournament Lady cardinals surprise
championship

Mustangs got their running going
as McCabe hit ajum per, Matheny

to make it 15-7. McCabe scored on
a tip-in and a lay-in o ff a drive to
end the first quarter with a 19-9
Mustang lead.
Matheny scored o ff a rebound
and Adams hit a shortjumper to open
the second. Elguezabal hit a rebound
basket and Matheny hit a three-
pointer to end the first half with the
M ustangs taking a 28-12 lead.
Rust converted a three point play,
Adams completed a three point play
o ff a rebound put-back and
E.lguezabal scored o ff the fast break
on a nice pass from Matheny to make
it 36-14. Rust and McCabe scored
o ff driv es to make it 40-16, then
M cCabe scored o ff a pass from
Matheny and hit two free throws
to increase the lead 44-18. Winters
scored o ff a rebound and McCabe
hit a tip-in at the buzzer to make it
48-20 going into the fourth quarter.
Matheny scored off a drive and
W inters hit a short jumper off a pass
from McCabe to make it 53-22.
McCabe hit a running jum per and
W inters hit a baseline jum per to
make it 57-27. The final score was
58-32.
McCabe led the Mustangs with
22 points, hitting 10 o f 18 shots,
pulled down seven rebounds and
had two steals and two assists.
M atheny added 12 points, three
assists and two steals. Elguezabal
added eight points, four steals and
three assists; Adams had seven
rebounds; Winters had tour rebounds
and three steals; and Rust had four
rebounds.
M cCabe was nam ed Most
Valuable Player for the tournament
and, with Matheny and Adams,
named to the All-Tournament Team.

named.

rolled to the championship o f the
Oregon frail Classic at the
Convention C enter in Pendleton,
beating Condon. 57-38, on Friday.
Dec. 28. and Enterprise, 58-32, on

Mustangs improved to 7-1 on the
year and opened Columbia Basin
Conference play at home against
Umatilla on Friday, Jan. 4. then
traveled to Sherm an County on
Saturday. Dec. 5,
Brad Adams got the Mustangs
going with a tip-in and Michael
McCabe hit a jumper. After a Blue
Devil three-pointer, McCabe scored
on a nice pass from Chuy Elguezabal
and Stefan M atheny scored o ff a
steal to make it 8-3. rhe Blue Devils
came back to take a 9-8 lead, but
Matheny hit a lay-m off a drive and
Kevin Drake hit a three-pointer to
give the Mustangs a 13-9 lead alter
one.
McCabe scored o ff a drive, but
the Blue Devils cam e back to tie
it at 15-15 before McCabe hit a short
jum per and Elguezabal scored o ff
a rebound to make it 19-15. Adams
scored o ff a drive and McCabe hit
another short jumper to make it 23-
17. The M ustangs took a 25-19
halftime lead as McCabe got a steal
and fed Elguezabal for a lay-in.
Four straight free throws by
McCabe to open the third increased
the lead to 29-19, then the Mustangs
went on a roll, getting a running
jumper from Matheny, a long jump
shot from McCabe, a free throw from
Adams, two short jum pers from
Met abe and a lay-in by Josh Winters
on a nice pass from Elguezabal to
make it 4 0 -2 1.

points, hitting 12 o f 14 shots, and
had three rebounds and three steals.
Adams had 10 points and pulled
down 14 rebounds. Matheny hit five
o f nine shots for 10 points with two
steals and two assists. Brian Rust
had five steals and four rebounds.

lone varsity men lose
lone Cardinal varsity men were
unable to keep up with the I leppner
Mustangs on Friday, Dec. 21, losing
to the Heppner team, 55-77.
The Mustangs commanded the
lead early in the quarter and had a
4-0 lead over lone with only two
minutes off the clock. lone made
a hearty attempt to keep up with the
Mustangs and. at the end o f the first
quarter, w ere down by four points.
11-15. By halftim e, the Cardinals
liad a 19-39 deficit and couldn't make
it up.
Brad Burnght led the team with
16 points, 13 rebounds, one assist,
one steal and blocked two Mustang
point attempts. Adam Neiffer
pumped in 13 points, grabbed six
rebounds, delivered four assists and
blocked one shot. Ashley Roberts
scored 10 points, grabbed two
rebounds and handed off four assists.
Karl Morgan scored seven points,
brought down three rebounds, passed
out one assist and seized one
Mustang possession. Andrew
Rietmann scored four points and
overturned one Heppner possession.

were Adam M cCabe with four
rebounds, Nick Christman with two
rebounds and Cayle Krebs with one

lone varsity girls
overwhelmed by Rockets
I he Pilot Rock Rockets
overwhelmed the lone varsity girls
on Saturday. Dec. 22. Pilot Rock
played tight defense and used a full
court press the entire game to devour
the ( ardinals. handing the Cardinal
women a 31-56 loss.
Diana M cElligott led the team
w ith 10 points, four rebounds, two
steals and one assist. Amellia Peck
added nine points, brought down
endeavor. Natalie McElligott scored
seven points, brought down two
rebounds, blocked one shot nabbed
two steals and deliv ered three assists.
Kristina Powell scored six points,
apprehended five rebounds and led
the team in blocked shots by swatting
three Mustang point attempts.
Amellia Peck scored five points,
and was a force to reckon with on
the boards by grabbing 11 rebounds,
pilfering three Mustang possessions,
and delivering one assist. Cyndi
Heagy scored four points at the free
throw line and seized three rebounds.
Salli McElligott scored three points,
launching a missile from three-point
territory at the end o f the third
quarter.
lone varsity men surprised
by Rockets
Pilot Rock surprised the lone
varsity men early in their game on
Saturday, Dec. 22. Pilot Rock had
a 0-4 lead in the first 15 seconds.
Billy Gates canned a three-point
bucket to close the gap 3-4. Brad
Burnght followed up with an
additional three-point bucket to lead
the Rockets by two, 6-4. The Rockets
added 21 points in the fourth quarter
in an attempt to tighten the gap but
the Cardinal men maintained their
lead to hand Pilot Rock a 74-65 loss.
Brad B urnght led the team's
scoring with 27 points. Burnght also
led the team with 14 rebounds and
delivered three assists and overturned
two Rocket possessions. Ashley
Roberts scored
16 points,
apprehended six rebounds, three
steals and distributed five assists.
Andrew Rietmann added seven
points to the score, brought down
seven rebounds, delivered two assists
and swiped two steals. Adam
McCabe scored seven points and
seized two rebounds
Adam Neiffer added six points
and three rebounds to his team's
effort. Billy Gates canned two three-
point shots for a total o f six points,
led the team with eight assists,
grabbed one rebound and three steals.
Karl Morgan donated five points,
three rebounds, one assist and one
steal.
Mustang I * 4C’ team wins
triple overtime thriller

The Heppner Mustang "C" team
boys outlasted the visiting Riverside
Pirates, winning 70-69 in three
overtim es on Thursday, Jan. 3.
The Mustangs took a 14-10 lead
after one, getting a three-pointer from
Josh Gutierrez, four points from Judd
Lemmon and a three-pointer from
Damn Skaggs. Gutierrez scored four
more in the second, but Riverside
closed to within 24-22 at halftime.
Lemmon scored seven points in
the third, along with Gutierrez's four,
to give the Mustangs a 41 -35 lead
after three. The Pirates then went
on a 14-0 run in the first four minutes
o f the fourth to take a 49-41 lead.
The Mustangs battled back though
and Gutierrez hit three free throws
with 6.3 seconds left to tie the game
at 53-53 and send it to overtime.
The Pirates hit a three-pointer
to take an early lead, but Lemmon
came back with twojump shots and
two free throws to give the Mustangs
a 59-56 lead. The Pirates came back
to tie. hitting one o f two free throws
with 8.2 seconds left to tie it at 59-all
and send it to a second overtime.
Kiel Naim s hit a three-pointer
with 28 seconds left in the second
overtime to give the Mustangs a 66-
64 lead, but the Pirates came back
to tie it up again, hitting an off-
balance shot in the final seconds
to force yet another overtime.
Iremmon hit two free throws with
a minute left in the third overtime
to give the M ustangs a 70-69 lead
and they made it stand up, finally
taking the win.
Lemmon led all scorers with 29
points, including nine for 12 from
the free throws line, with Gutierrez
adding 19 points. Tyler Boyer and
Kyle Huddleston each had six points.

Ione JV girls defeated
Ionejumor varsity women were
no match for Pilot Rock on Saturday.
Dec. 22. lone was handed a 23-44
defeat by the Rockets. Pilot Rock
proved to be a tough defensive team.
The Cardinal women, howev er, were
not discouraged as they never gave
up trying during the game.
Barbara Holland was the leading
point producer for the young Cards
with 13 points. Holland also led the
team with eight rebounds and
blocked one shot. Megan E. McCabe
scored four points, apprehended four
rebounds and one steal. Sara Peck
played aggressively, scored two
points, grabbed two rebounds one
steal and blocked one shot attempt.
Caitlin Orem scored two points,
grabbed four rebounds, and delivered
two assists.
Emily Key scored one point at
the free throw line in the second
quarter. Key brought down one
rebound, handed out three assists,
blocked one shot and seized three
steals. M eghan M. McCabe
connected with one basket from the
free throw line in the second quarter
while donating four rebounds and
one steal to her team's cause. Also
helping the Cardinal women on the
boards were Missy Baker with two
rebounds and Alyssa Rietmann with
three rebounds.

surprised the Mustangs on Friday,
Dec. 21, by claiming a 37-26 victory.
The score was tied at eight points
with 1:30 rem aining in the first
quarter when Natalie M cElligott
connected with one basket at the
free throw line to lead 9-8 at the end
of the quarter. The Cardinal women
had several steals and some checked
balls to lead the M ustangs 17-13
at the half rhe Cardinals maintained
the lead the remainder o f the game
Diana McElligott led the Cardinals
on the scoreboard with 12 points.
McElligott also provided five
rebounds, one blocked shot, four
steals and three assists to her team's

commanded a 23-17 lead in the first
quarter and continued to outscore
the Pilot Rock Rockets for an 80-69
victory on Dec. 29.

Grizzlies, 59-28.

delivered one assist and seized one
Grizzly possession. Adam Neiffer
scored six points, caught 14
rebounds, apprehended two steals
and blocked one Grizzly point
attempt. Andrew Rietmann scored
six points, delivered two assists,
brought down one rebound and
swiped one Helix ball.
Ashley Roberts added five points,
two assists, nine rebounds, and one
steal to the Cardinal arsenal. Billy
Gates canned one three-point bucket,
grabbed five rebounds, and delivered
five assists for the lone men. Adam
McCabe scored three points, grabbed
three rebounds and one steal. Nick
Christman scored two points and
apprehended two rebounds. Cayle
Krebs scored two points, handed
out two assists and brought down
two rebounds. Mike Radie added
two points and snared one rebound.

Town & Country includes
programs for producers
Heppner Town and Country 2002.
"The Red, White and Blue" will be
held Thursday, Jan. 17.
The afternoon program begins
at 1:30 p.m. with "Weed,” a one-act
play characterizing the con flicts of
a landowner when he finds an
unknown "plant” on his Bl.M
allotm ent and the struggles he
endures as he decides to report it
to the BLM office.
The play also shows the danger
o f losing the Western way o f life.
All this is done in a lighthearted style
to bring the message home and "is
a convincing way to see ourselves,
evaluate our beliefs and consider
the beliefs o f others," said an
Extension news release
