Rust and McCabe scored o ff driv es to make it 40-16, then M cCabe scored o ff a pass from Matheny and hit two free throws to increase the lead 44-18. Winters scored o ff a rebound and McCabe hit a tip-in at the buzzer to make it 48-20 going into the fourth quarter. Matheny scored off a drive and W inters hit a short jumper off a pass from McCabe to make it 53-22. McCabe hit a running jum per and W inters hit a baseline jum per to make it 57-27. The final score was 58-32. McCabe led the Mustangs with 22 points, hitting 10 o f 18 shots, pulled down seven rebounds and had two steals and two assists. M atheny added 12 points, three assists and two steals. Elguezabal added eight points, four steals and three assists; Adams had seven rebounds; Winters had tour rebounds and three steals; and Rust had four rebounds. Dec. 5, Brad Adams got the Mustangs going with a tip-in and Michael McCabe hit a jumper. Four straight free throws by McCabe to open the third increased the lead to 29-19, then the Mustangs went on a roll, getting a running jumper from Matheny, a long jump shot from McCabe, a free throw from Adams, two short jum pers from Met abe and a lay-in by Josh Winters on a nice pass from Elguezabal to make it 4 0 -2 1. laking a 40-25 lead into the fourth. Salli McElligott scored three points, launching a missile from three-point territory at the end o f the third quarter. lone varsity men surprised by Rockets Pilot Rock surprised the lone varsity men early in their game on Saturday, Dec. 22. Pilot Rock had a 0-4 lead in the first 15 seconds. Billy Gates canned a three-point bucket to close the gap 3-4. Brad Burnght followed up with an additional three-point bucket to lead the Rockets by two, 6-4. The Rockets added 21 points in the fourth quarter in an attempt to tighten the gap but the Cardinal men maintained their lead to hand Pilot Rock a 74-65 loss. Brad B urnght led the team's scoring with 27 points. Burnght also led the team with 14 rebounds and delivered three assists and overturned two Rocket possessions. Ashley Roberts scored 16 points, apprehended six rebounds, three steals and distributed five assists. Mustang I * 4C’ team wins triple overtime thriller By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang "C" team boys outlasted the visiting Riverside Pirates, winning 70-69 in three overtim es on Thursday, Jan. 3. The Mustangs took a 14-10 lead after one, getting a three-pointer from Josh Gutierrez, four points from Judd Lemmon and a three-pointer from Damn Skaggs. Gutierrez scored four more in the second, but Riverside closed to within 24-22 at halftime. Lemmon scored seven points in the third, along with Gutierrez's four, to give the Mustangs a 41 -35 lead after three. The Pirates then went on a 14-0 run in the first four minutes o f the fourth to take a 49-41 lead. The Mustangs battled back though and Gutierrez hit three free throws with 6.3 seconds left to tie the game at 53-53 and send it to overtime. The Pirates hit a three-pointer to take an early lead, but Lemmon came back with twojump shots and two free throws to give the Mustangs a 59-56 lead. The Pirates came back to tie. hitting one o f two free throws with 8.2 seconds left to tie it at 59-all and send it to a second overtime. Kiel Naim s hit a three-pointer with 28 seconds left in the second overtime to give the Mustangs a 66- 64 lead, but the Pirates came back to tie it up again, hitting an off- balance shot in the final seconds to force yet another overtime. Iremmon hit two free throws with a minute left in the third overtime to give the M ustangs a 70-69 lead and they made it stand up, finally taking the win. Lemmon led all scorers with 29 points, including nine for 12 from the free throws line, with Gutierrez adding 19 points. The afternoon program begins at 1:30 p.m. with "Weed,” a one-act play characterizing the con flicts of a landowner when he finds an unknown "plant” on his Bl.M allotm ent and the struggles he endures as he decides to report it to the BLM office. The play also shows the danger o f losing the Western way o f life.
