TEN - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 26, 2001 First half carries Mustangs to win over Cardinals B> Kick !*Julius A big first half lead carried the Heppner Mustangs to a 77-55 win over the visiting lone Cardinals on Fnday, Dec. 21, running their pre season record to 5-1. Their next games will be at Pendleton in the Oregon frail Class on Friday and Saturday. Dec. 28-29. The Mustangs jum ped out to a 20-11 lead after one, getting seven points from Stefan Matheny, who hit both o f this three-point attempts, five points from Michael McCabe, including a three-pointer, and a three- pointer from Brian Rust. David Norton scored eight points in the second quarter, hitting four of five free throws. Matheny added five points, including another three- pointer, and M cCabe hit another three-pointer as the M ustangs increased their lead to 39-19 at halftime. Norton hit four o f six shots in the third, scoring eight points, and Rust and Kevin Drake each hit three- pointers as the Mustangs took a 58- 36 lead after three quarters. Chuy Flgue/abal was three for three, scoring six points in the fourth, w ith Josh Winters adding four points as the Mustangs coasted to the win. Norton led the M ustangs with 18 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, seven offensive, and had two steals. Matheny added 16 poinLs. Rust added 11 points and four rebounds. Josh Winters scored seven points. Mc( abe had eight points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists. Brad Adams rud six rebounds; Drake had tour rebounds; Flguezabal had three ivbounds and two assists; and I Xvnald Adams had three assists. Heppner JV boys coast to win over Condon By Rick Paullus The Heppner M ustangs hit 10 three-pointers on their way to a 77-36 win over the visiting Condon Blue Devils on Tuesday. Dec. 18, their first home game of the year, running their record to 4-1 on the year. ITie Blue Devils stayed close for a quarter, but a 49-18 advantage in the second and third quarters earned the M ustangs to the win. Bnan Rust got the Mustangs going by hitting a long three-pointer. Michael McCabe hit a longjumper. but the Blue Devils came back to tie it at 5-5. Rust hit a short jumper, a three-pointer and M cCabe hit a jumper, fhe Blue Devils then rallied to trail 12-11 after one. The Mustangs got going in the second quarter as Brad Adams hit two free throws then com pleted a three-pomt play on a pass from David Norton. Chuy Elguezabal got a steal and a lay-in and Norton scored on a nice tip pass from McCabe to make it 23-11. Kevin Drake hit a free throw' and Stefan Matheny hit a three- pointer to make it 27-13. Drake then hit a baseline jumper and Matheny scored on a drive to make it 31 -15. McCabe completed a three-point play and Elguezabal hit a three- pointer as the Mustangs took a 38-19 halftime lead. Norton hit a tum-around jumper to open the third. Rust hit a three- pointer and Adams scored o ff an offensive rebound to extend the lead to 45-21. Adams scored on a nice pass from Elguezabal. Drake and Matheny hit back-to-back three- pointers and Rust completed a three- point play to increase the lead to 56- 27 late in the third. Rust hit a three- pointer and Norton scored off a nice pass from Elguezabal to close out the third with the Mustangs leading 61-29. Matheny hit a three-pointer to open the fourth and Norton hit two free throws to make it 66-32. Drake hit a jum per. Adams hit two free throws, Elguezabal hit a three-pointer and Adams scored twice on offensive rebounds as the Mustangs coasted to the win. Rust led the Mustangs with 17 poinLs while Adams scored 16 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, seven of then offensive. Matheny hit three o f four three-pointers and finished with 11 points. McCabe had nine points and four rebounds. Norton had eight points and 11 rebounds. Drake also had eight points and had six rebounds. Elguezabal had eight points and two assists. Josh Winters cam e up with three steals. Randy Camme led Condon with 15 points, with Todd Shaffer adding 13. Dec. 18. to extend their record to 4-0 on the year. Four points by Brian Haguewood and three by Luke Murray carried the Mustangs to a 13-5 lead after one. Four points each by Haguewood. Tanner Bntt and Justin Botefuhr helped build the big halftim e lead. The Blue Devils made a run in the third quarter, narrowing the lead to 41 -26. but the Mustangs got their running game going in the fourth quarter to coast to the win. Kyler Lovgren scored six points, Doug Orwick, four, and Murray, three, in the fourth to make the final margin 59-33. 1 laguevv ood led a balanced sconng effort by the M ustangs with 10 points, followed by Lovgren and Murray with eight each. Botefuhr. seven, and Conor Kilkenny and Orwick scored six points each. Three-pointers: nnnp JV girls hold off Cardinals By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang JV girls held off the visiting lone Cardinals to win, 45-30, on Friday, Dec. 21, to improve to 4-1 on the year. They don't play again until Friday, Jan. 4. at home against Umatilla. The Mustangs took an 11 -4 lead after one. getting six points from Brooke Rust and a three-pointer front Nikki Sisk, and led 18-10 at halftime. Madison Bailey and Rust each scored four points in the third as the Mustangs led. 33-24. and put it away in the fourth, getting four points each from Chantea Macaulay and Shanna Rietmann. By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang JV boys took a 16-7 lead after one quarter against the visiting lone Cardinals and never looked back, winning 64- 27, on Fnday, Dec. 21, and running their record to 5-0 on the year. The JVs are off until Fnday. Jan. 4, when they play at home against Umatilla. Donald Adams and Justin Botefuhr each scored four points in the first to help the Mustangs to their lead; Josh W inters had four points and Conor Kilkenny, three, in the second as they took a 29-11 lead at halftime. Botefuhr scored eight points and Winters hit two three-pointers in the third quarter as the Mustangs extended their lead to 46-20 after three. Brandon Seitz scored 10 poinLs and Kyler Lovgren, five, as they coasted to the w in. Seitz led four Mustangs in double figures with 14 points, while Winters and Botefuhr each had 12 points and Lovgren finished with 10 poinLs. Mike Radie led the Cardinals with 11 points. By Rick Paullus A combination o f cold shooting, too many turnovers and losing Shelley Rietmann to a leg injury in the third quarter spelled defeat for the Heppner Mustang girls varsity as the visiting lone Cardinals posted a 37-26 win on Fnday, Dec. 21. The Mustangs hit just two o f 21 field goals in the first half and seven o f 48 for the game, plus com m itted 25 turnovers in dropping to 4-2 on the year. The M ustangs play in Pendleton at the Oregon Trail Classic Dec. 28-29 before beginning league play the next week. Rietmann scored six points, hitting four o f four free throws in the first quarter as the Cardinals led 9-8 after one and extended it to 17-13 at halftime.
