Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner Oregon Wednesday, December 19 2001 - SEVEN Tournament trophy goes to Heppner girls Mustang boys win Morrow tournament Photo by Judy Barber Heppner girls win the first-place trophy at the South Morrow County Tournament By Rick Paullus Hie first place trophy at the South Morrow County Tournament went to the I leppner Mustang varsity girls after a 55-42 win over the Riverside Pirates on Friday, Dec. 14, and a 44-43 win over the lone Cardinals in the cham pionship game on Saturday, Dec. 15. The win improves the Mustangs' record to 3 -1 on the season. They will have a rematch with lone at Heppner on Fnday, Dec. 21 . The Mustangs got off to a good start against the Pirates, getting five points, including a three-pointer, from Lacy Mattcson and three points from Brett Barber. The Mustangs built a 10-4 lead, but the Pirates came back to trail just 11-8 after one. Shelley Rietmann scored eight and Barber, two, as the Mustangs stretched their lead to 21 -10 midway through the second. Matteson hit another three-pointer to close out the first half with a 24-15 lead. Matteson hit another three-pointer to open the third quarter and Rietmann scored five straight points to increase the lead to 32-18. The Pirates then w ent on an 8-2 run to get within 34-26 going into the fourth quarter. The Mustangs didn't waste any time in putting the game away, as Rietmann scored, Barber made a free throw', Shanna Rietmann made a free throw in between two baskets by big sister, Shelley, Barber scored and Shanna Rietmann scored to make it 46-26. Shelley Rietmann hit two free throws and Kelsey Greenup scored to make it 50-28. The Pirates came back with seven straight points. Stefame Hanson hit three o f four free throw s and Tylynn Smith scored to close out the game, which put the M ustangs into the championship game. Shelley Rietmann led the way w ith 25 points. 10 rebounds and hit nine o f 13 free throws. Matteson was also in double figures with 11 points. Barber added nine points. The Mustangs got off to a strong start again against the Cardinals, getting six points from Shelley Rietmann and four from Meghan Bailey in taking a 14-1 lead after one. Bailey scored six more and Barber, five, in the second as the M ustangs took a 29-18 lead at halftime. Shelley Rietmann scored seven points in the third, but the Cardinals cut the lead to 40-31 going into the fourth. Barber hit two three-pointers and scored 13 points in the fourth as the Mustangs pulled away for the 55-43 win. Barber led the M ustangs with 18 points, three rebounds and two assists. Shelley Rietmann added 17 points, 13 rebounds and tw o steals. Bailey had 10 points and four rebounds. Matteson had five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Diana McElligott led lone with 16 points, with Amellia Peck adding 10. lone junior varsity men were plagued with turnovers early in their game against Stanfield on Dec. 11. The Tigers scored 13 points within the first three minutes o f the game. Tyler Raible was the lone Cardinal member to score two points in the first quarter with one minute remaining. At the close o f the quarter, Stanfield led lone 25-2. Nick Christman came o ff the bench to donate five points, while team members Adam McCabe, Til Tullis and Tim Doherty each donated two points for a 19-38 score by the half. lone held Stanfield to eight points while adding nine points o f their own in the third quarter, but it seem like the Stanfield men couldn't miss in the fourth quarter, hitting three baskets from the three-point area and another seven baskets to seal the 70-28 victory. The Blue Mountain High Five and Heppner Elks Lodge First Annual Christmas Invitational Tournam ent is scheduled for Decem ber 28. 29 and 30 at Heppner High School. Adam McCabe added five points, led the team on the boards with six rebounds and grabbed two steals. Johnny Collin scored two points, and captured one rebound. Tim Doherty contributed two points, one rebound and seized one steal. Tyler Raible scored two points, one rebound and one steal. Arthur Ekstrom captured three rebounds and blocked one shot. Jeff Hunt apprehended one rebound, blocked one shot attem pt, delivered two assists and aided in the team thievery with two steals. Curtis Thompson captured three rebounds and nabbed one Tiger possession. The Mustangs outscored Mac-1 ft. 24-12. in the third quarter on Fnday on their way to a 73-44 w in and outscored lone. 29-7. in the third on then way lo an 86-56 w in on Saturday in the championship game. In the M ac-Ill game. David Norton scored eight points and Stefan Mathcny hit a three-pointer as the teams were tied at 17-17 after one. Bnan Rust hit a three-pointer to open the second quarter. Norton hit two free throw s. Mathcny and Kevin Drake each scored to make it 26-21 and Norton scored seven straight points to help the M ustangs take a 33-25 lead ai halftime. Michael McCabe scored twice to open the third to make it 37-29. Norton and Mathcny each scored to make it 41-33 then Norton went on a 6-0 run to make it 47-35. Drake hit a jumper. Brad Adams converted a three-point play and Rust hit a three-pointer and a jum per to close out the third with the M ustangs leading 57-37. Britt scored to open the third quarter, hut the Bulldogs came back w ith six straight points before Marcy Miller scored to cut the lead to21-20 Nikki Sisk hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 23-23. but the Bulldogs scored at the end of the third to take a 25-23 lead. Rust and Stefame Hanson scored to make it 69-39. Flgue/abal hit two free throws to make it 71-41 and Donald Adams finished out the scoring to make the final 73-44 Norton led the Mustangs w ith 27 points and 15 rebounds, with M cCabe adding 10 points. Brad Adams had nine point and pulled down 10 rebounds Rust added eight points, including two three-pointers. Mathcny added sev en points and Elguezabal dished out eight assists.
