Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 5, 2001 - FIVE Poster contest winners announced The annual conservation poster contest sponsored by Morrow Soil and Water Conservation District was held June 11. The theme this year was "Habitat For Life". "The theme was a reminder to the students that people, like all living things, depend on the world around them-their habitat," said a district spokesperson. This year the students in the fourth through sixth grades from lone, Heppner and Columbia Middle School in Imgon participated in the contest. The winners for the fourth grade were Katie Moore, first place; Stephanie Rill, second place; Josh Shank, third place. The winners for the fifth grade were Teonna Vandever, first place; Emily Rietmann, second place; Paul Hams, third place. W inners for the sixth grade were Tina Morrison and Dons Hill, first place, T raci Buschke and Danmele Baker, second place; Jennifer Flores and Knstin Baldwin, third place from Columbia Middle School. A tight first quarter saw the Mustangs taking a 4-3 lead after one. but they used five points from Donald Adams and four from Luke Murray to build a 20-3 halftime lead. Murray scored four more in the third, and six points from Josh Winters in the fourth helped Heppner win going away. The Mustangs were led by Murray with 10 points, with Adams and Winters each adding seven points. Tanner Britt and Justin Botefuhr added five points apiece. "Reaching Out to Am erica's Future" was the title o f an original speech written and recorded by Jepsen. He will attend the state com petition in February. Club members turned in the blankets they had made for children in need o f them. The club has several new members: Jordan Graff, Kylee Svetich, Tyree Svetich and Tiana Camarillo. Members elected Kylee assistant secretary andTiana. "caller" person. Club members were asked to bnng in photos. They looked them over and discussed their features. At the next meeting, they hope to go to the nature trails near the Columbia River. Members present w ere: Miranda Hunt, Kylee Svetich, Tyree Svetich, Tiana Camarillo and leader Kristy Crowell. The Mustangs jum ped out to a 7-0 lead after one, getting four points from Lindsey Mitchell, only to see the Blue Devils go on an 8-0 run to start the second to get the lead. Stefanie Hanson scored six points to help Heppner regain the lead at 15-14 at halftime. Several steals by Shanna Rietmann and Nikki Sisk led to a 17-0 run in the third, with Rietmann scoring 13 points on six-for-six shooting. The Cardinals were handed a 9-46 loss by the Enterprise team. The Savages held the Cardinals scoreless in the first quarter and allowed only four points in the second quarter, holding a 26-4 lead by the half.
