Oregon Wednesday, November 7, 2001 Mustangs wrap up CBC undefeated; put Vikings away early The U.S. Arm y C orps of Engineers will begin the annual lowering o f Willow Creek Lake in Heppner on Friday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m. The lake will be at its wintertime level by Dec. 1. Water releases will be increased from three cubic feet per second (cfs) to 25 cfs on Nov. 9. The lake level will drop seven vertical feet between now and Dec. 1. Residents living along the creek below the dam should see a water level increase o f about six inches - measured at the gage house - as a result o f the increased water releases. Water releases from the lake could fluctuate depending on the amount o f water coming into the lake as rain and snow fall in the area. The lake is operated during the w inter m onths for flood dam age reduction and during the sum m er By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustangs completed their dominance o f the Columbia Basin Conference by putting away the Um atilla Vikings, 46-0, on Friday, Nov. 2, in Umatilla. The game was halted with 2:21 left in the third quarter due to the 45-point mercy rule. It was the Mustangs' third straight shut-out, and improved their CBC record to 6-0, 8-1 overall, during which they outscored their opponents 245 to 27. Next up for the second-ranked M ustangs will be a hom e gam e against the Portland Christian Royals on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. Portland Christian finished second in the Northwest League, behind Warren ton. The Mustangs didn't waste any time getting started as they took over at their own 38-yard line after forcing a punt. Stefan Matheny went for 29 yards, Michael McCabe for eight, then M atheny caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Chuy Elguezabal who kicked the extra point to make it 7-0. Travis Bellam y recovered an onside kick, but the M ustangs couldn't take advantage and Umati 11a took over on downs at their own 38- yard line. The defense again held with the M ustangs taking over at m idfield after a short punt. Kyler Lovgren ran for four and McCabe picked up nine and first down at the 37-yard line. Lovgren went for two, but a motion penalty brought it back to the 40. Elguezabal then hit Brian Rust for a 40-yard touchdown and kicked the extra point for a 14-0 lead. Luke Murray intercepted a Vilang pass on their next possession and returned it to the Heppner 43-yard line. The M ustangs went to work on the ground as M cCabe ran for three, Elguezabal picked up 10 and McCabe ran four times for 29 yards to the 15. One the first play o f the second quarter, M cCabe went the final h5 yards for the touchdown and the M ustangs led 20-0 as the kick was no good. On the Vikings' next possession, the M ustangs forced a punt which was partially blocked by David Norton and Kelly Paullus. It A-as caught by Elguezabal who returned it 32 yards for a touchdown. Elguezabal's lack was good to make it 27-0 with 9:57 left in the second quarter. The defense held as Norton had a sack to give the Mustangs the ball at their own 34-yard line. McCabe broke free for 34 yards but the M ustangs went backwards as a holding penalty, a sack and an incomplete pass gave the ball back to the Vikings. Umatilla didn't have it very long as Bellamy recovered a fumble at the Vikings' 27-yard line. Lovgren went for three, Elguezabal kept it for 14 and Lovgren went the final 10 yards for the touchdown. The kick was no good but the Mustangs led 33-0 late m the first half. Adam Bergstrom recovered an onside kick but the Mustangs' drive was ended by an interception. The Mustangs took over at their own 44 after the second-half kick-off, with Lovgren going for five and Rust running for seven, then 11 more to the 34-yard line. Elguezabal then hit Paullus for a touchdown and added the extra point to make it 40-0 early in the fourth. On the Vikmgs's next possession, Conor Kilkenny had a sack on third dow n to force a punt which was downed at the Mustangs' 33-yard line. After a delay o f game penalty, M cCabe picked up 15 and a first down, Tyler Boyer ran for four, Donald Adams for two and Boyer picked up four more and another first down. Rust ran four times for 12 yards and a first down at the 35. Arts & Crafts changes meeting date Morrow County Creative Arts and Crafts will meet Thursday, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m. at G D's Restaurant banquet room, due to the usual meeting date being on Thanksgiving. The agenda will include the Nov. 29 sale to be held from 4-7 p.m. at the St. Patrick's Senior Center recreation room. All members are asked to attend so the club can be sure o f set-up space. Members are asked to bring white elephant items and baked foods for the table to benefit the club for all the extra expenses for mural projects.
