SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, September 5, 2001 Mustangs open with 42-14 win over Central Linn By Rick Paullus The 2001 version of the Heppner Mustangs football team opened with a 42-14 win over the Central Linn Cobras in Halsey on Friday, Aug. 31. The Mustangs scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters and coasted to the early season win, with all players getting playing time. Heppner will be at Hood River against the Hood River JVs in their next pre-season game on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 7:30 p.m. The Mustangs' defense set the tone early as senior David Norton tackled the Cobra quarterback for a 15-yard loss to bring up fourth down. The offense started out well as Brad Adams went for seven and Donald Adams for five and a first down. Michael McCabe gained 10 more for another first down to the Cobras' 25-yard line. A holding penalty and a fumble on an option pitch took the ball back to midfield. McCabe picked up 17 yards on a screen pass from Stefan Matheny, but the Cobras took over on downs at their 33. The Mustangs' defense held again and they took over deep in Cobras' territory. Another holding penalty backed them up and forced a punt, which was fair caught at the four yard line. Donald Adams then intercepted a short pass and took it in for the Mustangs’ first touchdown of the year. McCabe's kick was good and Heppner led 7-0 with 2:21 left in the first quarter. A perfect onside kick by McCabe was recovered by Matheny at the Central Linn 43-yard line. A clipping penalty took the ball back to the Mustang 40. Donald Adams picked up four, a motion penalty backed them up again, then Matheny picked up 14. Norton took a pass from Matheny and went 46 yards for the touchdowm. After McCabe kicked the extra point, the Mustangs led 14-0 after one quarter. The Cobras came right back to get a touchdown on an 18-yard pass. The kick was no good and the Mustangs' lead w as cut to 14-6 with 9:52 left in the first half. The Mustangs took the kickoff back to their 38 and started moving the ball. Matheny hit Brad Adams for six then picked up 11 on his own. Brad Adams picked up three, McCabe seven and a first down, and Matheny went for nine more, but a pass interception gave the Cobras the ball at their own nine-yard line. The defense forced a punt which Matheny took 49 yards for the touchdown. He got several good blocks, including a crushing crackback from Conor Kilkenny, to give the Mustangs a 20-6 lead after the kick failed. Brian Rust intercepted a Cobra pass and brought it back 25 yards to the Central Linn 43. A fumble took it back to the Mustangs' 48, but Donald Adams picked up 13 and Matheny hit McCabe for 28 yards and a first down to the 12. After no gain, McCabe took another pass from Matheny, for a first down at the two-yard line. Sophomore Kyler Lovgren took it in for a touchdown. Matheny hit McCabe for the two-point conversion and the Mustangs took a 28-6 lead at halftime. The Mustangs took the second half kickoff to their own 34 and started marching down the field as Matheny ran for six yards twice and hit Norton for 12 more. Lovgren picked up three and McCabe picked up nine more and a first down at the 25. After a delay penalty, Matheny hit Norton for 14 and Brad Adams went for two and a first down. Matheny and Lovgren each went for six to set up Brad Adams' two yard touchdown run. McCabe's kick was good for a 35-6 lead with 7:28 left in the third. Matheny picked off a pass on the Cobras' next possession, but the Mustangs were unable to move the ball and had to punt. Norton sacked the quarterback for a nine-yard loss on fourth down to give the Mustangs the ball at the Central Linn 46. Matheny went for seven and Brad Adams picked up five more and a first down. McCabe ran for 13 and B. Adams, 11 more, before Donald Adams hit Norton for an 11-yard touchdown pass. McCabe kicked the extra point to make it 42-6 at the end of three. The Cobras got their second touchdown on a 63-yard pass. The two-point conversion was good and the Mustangs then led, 42-14. After the kickoff, Kelly Paullus went for three, Tyler Boyer for three more. Brad Adams for three and Donald Adams for four and a first down. The drive stalled and the Cobras got the ball back after a punt. After Matheny picked off his second pass. Brad Adams went for three, Paullus went for 10, then four more, and Aaron Delveaux went for two as the clock ran out. Matheny led the Mustangs in defense with 26 points, including two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Norton and Sam Van Liew each had 10 and Rust and Donald Adams each had nine defensive points with an interception. McCabe and Travis Bellamy each finished with eight points. The defense held the Cobras to minus six yards on 13 rushes and intercepted four passes. Matheny completed eight of 12 passes for 136 yards and one touchdown, and rushed nine times for 50 yards. McCabe rushed five times for 43 yards and caught four passes for 59 yards. Norton had four receptions for 83 yards and two touchdowns. The Mustangs had 353 yards total offense and 18 first downs, but w'ere slowed by 10 penalties for 82 yards.
