O f f The By AAcrlyn R obinson If Septem ber is the month o f the apple, then August had to be to reign o f the apricot as a profusion o f orange fruit dripped from trees. 1 was just fruity enough to grab my share o f bountiful apricots, some o f which are taking up space in the deep freeze after cramming and jamming. Sticky jam jars might just end up in family m em bers’ Christm as stockings. But I draw the line at sharing my food with four-footed creatures. Just lately the deer wiped out my lettuce, trimmed the carrots and tomatoes, took bites out o f green peppers and trampled the bush beans after which they ate roses for dessert. Perhaps mincem eat is in order, although I hope I continue to escape making deer burger with the car. While my gardening efforts, which the deer are determined to harvest, have been belatedly successful, my now scraggly petunias look like neglected orphans. True to their name, these long, stringy stems with a smattering o f bloom s now "wave" bravely in the breeze. My annoyance with creatures that invade my space brings to mind other grievances. Due to biased reporting by newspaper and television I'm better off not absorbing the news. When they talk about the economy going south, somehow they can't connect that with the fact that manufacturers and processors are moving south. Consumer goods, from automobiles to food, produced more cheaply in other countries and shipped here duty-free, continue to be at the root o f the downturn in this country's economy. Since the 1993 North American Free Trade Agreement, farm income has dropped 43 percent and 33,000 U.S. farmers with incom es under $ 100,000 have disappeared. What will happen if the administration approves fast track authority to include South America in a free trade agreement (no tariffs or restrictions) where hoof and mouth disease is rampant and the monetary exchange is not on par with the U.S. dollar? M eanwhile giant corporations like ConAgra have increased their profits by 189 percent and Archer Daniels Midland's profits rose from $110 million to $301 m illion during that same period. Aside from that worldly stuff that most people are sure doesn't affect their lives, isn't it crazy how people flock to a yard sale? M ost o f us have more "stuff' than we can stuff somewhere. I thought I was going to have to wrestle someone for a well-used garden hoe recently as people lugged home treasures. Griping along- -on a daily basis I can never find the right lid for those numerous plastic food containers. I guess it's too much to ask that they all be made interchangeable. And if you're a fashion-conscious home decorator, it's said that long window drapes should "puddle" on the floor. If you've raised children or pets, you already know about puddles on the floor and that children are prone to using anything lying limping on the floor to mop faces or places. Lately I pay more attention when buying everyday clothing and forgo those garments that have buttons the size o f a pinhead. Or how about those necklaces with fasteners that are also made for tiny, nimble fingers? W hen on a shopping venture, I wonder who designs those doors on cramped restroom stalls. I'd rather have to peek under the door or yell "I'm coming out" to avoid smacking someone in the face, than to practically crawl up on the toilet seat to navigate the door that opens to the inside. And why can't they make doors on passenger cars that open wider when your arms are loaded with bulky packages? Although there are larger vehicles. I'll probably continue to try to jam oversized articles in the back seat or you might see a tree hanging out a car window. I'll have one more thing to complain about when we change from daily to standard time. When it gets dark earlier so suddenly, my bones no longer seem movable and ambition flees with the sunshine. Guess I'm one o f those people who continue to mumble about things they can't or won't change Changes can be good though; so when it comes to acceptable language, "ain't" it great! All slang words are being added to new dictionaries! Roll over. Webster!
