During his early years, George had heard talk of the chicken Dutchman, and often wondered who the man was and how he came to be in Heppner. This became the inspiration for his novel. Seventy people, including children, grandchildren and three gTeat-granddaughters of Ruth McCabe and some members of other McCabe families. were in attendance. The weekend was one of visiting, renewing acquaintances and making new ones with cousins, aunts and uncles. Family members came from Oregon, Washington.
