Engagement Obituaries Tompkins - Struckmeier Helen Shirley Drake Brian Struckmeier and Heather Tompkins Mr. and Mrs. Brent Tompkins of Prescott, WA., announce the engagement of their daughter. Heather Tompkins, to Brian Struckmeier, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Struckmeier of Waitsburg, WA., formerly of Heppner. Heather is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Borth of Lind, WA., and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Tompkins of Walla Walla, WA. Brian is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. William Scott of Heppner, and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Struckmeier of Scio, OR. The bride is a 1997 graduate of Prescott High School. She is currently attending Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood, WA., where she will graduate in retail floral design and marketing in March. She will be employed at Holly's Flower's until her wedding. The groom is a 1996 graduate of Heppner High School. He received an associate's degree in 1998 from Walla Walla Community College in ag science and his certification from Northwest Lineman's College in Boise, ID., in 1999. He is currently employed by Southwest Line Constructors in Houston, TX. A May wedding is planned. The groom-elect's parents are Jim Moody, Imgon, and Linn and Bill Stark, Irrigon. Stephanie graduated from Lewiston High School in Lewiston, Idaho, and from the University of Idaho in 1997. She is employed in the field of pyschology. Jeff is a graduate of Riverside High School in Boardman. He is co-owner of Tyler Construction in Hermiston. Helen Shirley Drake, 68, formerly of lone, died Thursday, February 22, 2001, at her daughter's home in Hermiston. A memorial graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 3,2001, at 1 p.m. at the High View Cemetery in lone. Mrs. Drake was bom on April 3, 1932, at Taylor, Wisconsin, to William and Lena Anderson Paine. She graduated from Cascade Locks High School in 1950. She married her Robert C. Drake, on October 13, 1975, in Reno, Nevada. Mrs. Drake was a resident of The Dalles for the past 20 years. She had been employed in retail clothing sales and also as a cook. She was a member of the St. Peter's Catholic Church in The Dalles. She loved reading, music, embroidery and visiting with family and friends. Survivors include her husband, Robert C. Drake of The Dalles; sons, Kent and wife Rene Gutierrez of Hermiston, Kevin ar.d wife Peggy Gutierrez of Prineville, Kim and wife Gayle Gutierrez of Heppner, and Craig and wife Debbie Gutierrez of Heppner; daughters, Christine and husband Chuck Smith of Hermiston, and Cathleen and husband Ashle> McCabe of lone; sister, Ardis Funk of Port Townsend. Washington; 13 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by brother Carroll Paine, and two sisters, Lorraine Funk and Violet Mize. Jewell, 80, formerly of Heppner and Monument, died Thursday, February 22, 2001 at Good Samaritan Center in Hermiston. A graveside service was held Tuesday, February 27,2001 at the Monument Cemetery in Monument. She was bom February 27,1920, in Heppner, to Albert and Emma Merrill Emry. The family moved to Monument where she attended school, graduating from Monument High School She attended college for two years. On May 25, 1942, she married William I. Jewell in Vancouver, Washington. The couple lived in Monument until 1957 when they moved to Kinzua. Mrs. Jewell worked at Kinzua Pine Mills for a time, then taught kindergarten in Fossil for 10 years. In 1978, the Jewells moved to Heppner where she worked for Senior and Disabled Services for a number o f years. In 1995. she moved to Hermiston. She had been a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Heppner. Survivors include a daughter, Nedra Ross of Irrigon; a son, Tim Jewell of Kimberly; a brother. Hugh Emry of Seattle; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Jewell, a son, Paul Jewell, a daughter, LouAnne Roth, sister, Ivy Johnson, and brother, Elvey Emry. Bechdolt Velva G. Bechdolt, 95, of Vancouver, Washington, formerly of Fleppner and Boardman, died February 16, 2001, in Vancouver, Washington. Funeral services were held Friday, February 23, 2001 at the Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home in Vancouver, Washington. A graveside service was held at the Hardman Cemetery in Hardman on Monday, February 26, 2001. Velva Jackson was bom March 17, 1905 in Dixon, California. She graduated from Oregon State University and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, second order. She married Adrian C. Bechdolt in Hardman in 1939. Mr. Bechdolt died in 1989. Mrs. Bechdolt taught school in Boardman from 1943-1953 and in Heppner from 1953-1965. The couple moved to Pendleton in 1965 and in 1995, she moved to Vancouver, Washington.
