Heppner controlled every aspect o f the game, forcing twice as many turnovers, holding position under the boards and picking off the offense. Lacey Matteson frustrated the Stanfield defense as she personally matched steals with the entire Stanfield team. M atteson’s stats included 10 points, six assists, five steals and two blocked shots. Shelley Rietmann had a game- high 15 points and 10 rebounds. This win keeps Heppner in control o f third place in the Columbia Basin Conference with the final weekend o f league pipy on the horizon. The Mustangs host league leader Pilot Rock on Friday, January 16, and travel to W ahtonka on Saturday. Pilot Rock travels to Moro on Saturday in a fight for the first place position in the CBC with the Huskies o f Sherman County. By Molly Rhea The varsity Heppner girls had all they wanted and more from Weston-M cEwen on Friday, February 9. The Mustangs barely got the bam door shut on the rabid TigerScots to eke out a 41-40 victory and hold onto their third place standing in the Columbia Basin Conference. With both teams putting on full court pressure, it was more than three minutes into the game before Megan Bailey took the lid o ff the basket and put in an offense rebound. The Mustangs lead 13-8 when the first quarter buzzer blew. The second period started out fast and rough. The Tiger-Scots hit their shots, outscoring the M ustangs. 9-18, to take a four- point lead into the break. The Heppner squad attempted but they were only able to score eight, while holding Weston- McEwen to eight. The Mustangs continued to trail, and the Tiger Scots, along with their rowdy fans, were hoping to hold the advantage. In the fourth quarter Shelley Rietmann took the reins to score nine o f her 13 points. Through the final period, the Mustangs had to lean into their traces, just to stay close. With two minutes on the clock the scoreboard read 37-40 when M arissa McCabe hit an eight-foot jum per to pull the M ustangs within one. Then a Lacey Matteson pass hit Rietmann for the bucket to put the Mustangs ahead. Heppner controlled the ball and played out the clock for the win. The Mustangs out-rebounded W eston-McEwen, 48 to 34, with Rietmann pulling down 14 boards and McCabe grabbing 13. The win came from behind the charity stripe, as the Tiger-Scots managed to hit only one o f five free-throws, while the Mustangs converted six o f 11. There is a good chance that these two teams will meet in the first game o f the district playoffs. The Mustangs will need to have their heads up and control the game to keep on top o f this rough and tumble team from Athena.
