Heppner fCf boys nip Eagles By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang "C" team boys held on to nip the visiting Spray Eagles' JV team, 42-39, on Thursday, Feb. 1, to improve their record to 8-0 on the year. Connor Kilkenny got the Mustangs going, hitting a three- pointer to start the game and help them to a 9-2 lead early on. The Mustangs led 18-14 after one, but the Eagles came back to take a 25-21 lead at halftime. The Mustangs got their press going in the third quarter, going on a 14-2 run and eventually lead 35-29 going into the fourth quarter. The Eagles got to within 41-39 with :50 left, but Aaron Griffith hit a free throw with : 12 left to make Heppner girls fall to it 42-39. A desperation three-pointer at the buzzer fell short, giving the Huskies in big way Mustangs the win. Josh Wmters led the Mustangs with 11 punts and pulled down seven rebounds. Griffith added 10 points, including a three-pointer. Kilkenny finished with eight points and six rebounds. Justin Botefur had a strong inside game, pulling down 13 rebounds. Lady Cardinal varsity surprises Blue Devils lone Lady Cardinal's varsity squad surprised Condon on Friday, Feb. 2, by defeating the Blue Devils, 36-33. lone had a 29-22 lead at the end o f the third quarter but Condon closed the lead, adding an additional 11 points to their score in the fourth quarter. lone shot 50 percent from the line and 37 percent from the field. Leading the Cardinal cause was Natalie McElligott with 17 points, shooting 100 percent from both the three-point area and the foul line. McElligott also captured three rebounds, five steals, delivered three assists and blocked two shot attempts. Amellia Peck dumped in eight points, brought down one rebound, seized one steal and distributed two assists. Cyndi Heagy scored four points, seized five rebounds and handed out one assist. Diana McElligott added four points, grabbed five rebounds, five steals and blocked one shot. Salli McElligott scored three points in the second quarter, nabbed two steals and shoveled out two assists. Shelby Krebs captured two rebounds, one steal and delivered one assist. Kristina Powell aided the Cardinals capturing five rebounds. Powell also blocked one Condon attempt for a basket and delivered one assist. lone JV girls lose to Condon The lone junior varsity women had a tight game against Condon on Fnday, Feb. 2, losing to the Blue Devils, 27-15. The first half o f the game was close as the score at the end o f the first quarter was tied at four points. By halftime, lone had pulled ahead of the Blue Devils to lead 9-6. Condon became more intense after the half to double their score and lead the Cardinals by two points, 13-11 at the end of the third quarter. Emily Key led the Cardinals with five points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist. Jeanette Brantley added four points, led the team on the boards with seven rebounds, and pilfered one steal from the Devils. Eva Chi tty scored three points, nabbed one rebound and two steals. Natalie McElligott added two points, three rebounds and apprehended two Devil possessions. Tracy Griffith added one point, captured five rebounds and three steals. Megan E. McCabe grabbed one rebound and pilfered three steals. Helping out Brantley on the boards was Meghan M. McCabe with six rebounds. McCabe also helped the team thievery with two steals. By Molly Rhea It was a horrible, terrible, very bad day, Saturday, February 3, for the varsity Heppner girls. The Mustangs were unable to get through the Huskies' smothering press and Sherman County kept up the pressure throughout the game. The Huskies mushed out to a 23-6 first quarter lead and, although the Mustangs did manage to keep pace in the second period. Heppner just couldn't get anything together and went down, 75-37. Shelley Rietmann and Lacey Matteson both scored 10 points, and Jodi Carlson was credited with five boards. This loss keeps the Mustangs holding third place in the Columbia Basin Conference. Heppner hosts fourth-place Weston-McEwen this Friday, February 9, and travels to Stanfield on Saturday afternoon lone Lady Cardinal varsity team defeated Dufur, 48-37, on Saturday, Feb. 3. Heppner girls outscore Vikings Lady Cards beat Dufur The Heppner Mustang JV boys blew past the visiting Culver Bulldogs, 65-39, to extend their perfect record to 12-0 on Saturday, Jan. 27. The Mustangs are at home on Friday, Feb. 2, against Umatilla, and travel to Sherman County on Saturday, Feb. 3, for their next games. Chuy Elguezabal scored nine points in the first quarter as the Mustangs built a 13-9 lead after one. Elguezabal scored eight and Sam Van Liew, five, as they extended their lead to 32-16 at halftime. Chantea McCauley and Stephanie Hanson both scored six points for the Mustangs, with McClauley also snaring the majority of Heppner's rebounds. TTiis has been a tough season for these young gals as they are forced to play most schools' JV teams. Nevertheless. Coach Kathy Britt is pleased with their progress and enhanced skills seen this season. The Heppner girls' C team came up with a big second quarter at Umatilla on Monday, January 29, outscoring the Vikings 16-4, to effectively put the game out of reach. The Mustangs ended up defeating the Vikings, 31-19. Nikki Sisk was a big part of the Mustangs second stanza push, scoring eight of her game-high 11 points, including two treys. Sisk came back in the third to swish in another three pointer. Marcy Miller and Tiffany Piper each scored seven points to add to Heppner's bottom line. I m atilla (19) Totals 9 1-2 19 Assisted Living Facility receives Meyer Memorial Trust monies The Willow Creek Valley Assisted Living Facility has received notice that it has been awarded a $12,000 Meyer Memorial Trust grant. The grant will be used to make the community's first assisted living facility "more interesting and identifiable by building a playground for visiting grandchildren and designing attractive signs and brochures." The Meyer Memorial Trust recently announced 46 awards totalling $5,046,550 to non-profit groups in Oregon and Clark County. WA, including the Willow Creek Valley Assisted Living Center during December and January. Board chair Gerry Pratt announced that the new grants brought the total funds awarded to more than $20.3 million in the Trust's current fiscal year, which began April 1, 2000. Since it began operating in 1982. the Meyer Trust has provided more than $266 million to tax-exempt groups, mostly within the state of Oregon. The grants included 27 awards in the Trust's Small Grants program, designed to provide assistance to small projects that are of special importance to applicants, which are normally smaller organizations. Grants awards ranged in size from $1,000,000 to Loaves and Fishes Centers in Portland to build a new central kitchen and administrative office for this senior meals program that serves Multnomah County to $1.500 to Good Shepherd Montessori Preschool and Kindergarten in Vancouver to improve the durability of its educational materials. Last year the Meyer Trust granted more than $23 million, and expects to award a similar amount this year, Pratt said. In addition to Pratt, trustees include Debbie Craig. John Emrick, Orcilia Zuniga Forbes, and Wame Nunn. The Meyer Memorial Trust is not connected with Fred Meyer Inc., the retail enterprise.
