The gifts had been donated to the day care center and placed under a Christmas tree at Murray Drugs. Free parenting Mid Columbia Bus hires new VP operations. Before joining classes offered MIDCO at the company's A parenting workshop, "1,2, 3, 4, Parents!", will be held on January 16, 25 and 30 in the conference room at the county offices above Heppner Hardware. The workshop is free to the community. The classes will include videos, activities and group discussion to help parents leam skills to better parent their children. The course will include: -discipline methods that work; -how to prevent problems such as tantrums; -ways to build a loving bond with your child; -the best ways to child-proof your home; -how to care for your child at different ages and stages; -ways to care for yourself. The workshop will also include a parent's workbook and a booklet of tips to help parents stay on track after the sessions are over. Session I includes: what makes parenting special; what to expect from your child at each age; your parenting style; child proofing your home; fun and easy ways to play with your child; finding time for yourself. Session II includes; why hurtful words and actions don't help; getting your child to do what you want-without a fuss; simple steps for discipline that work; routines that make life easier; making rules that your child will follow; how to keep you happy. Susan Hendrickson Doug Flatt, CEO for Mid Columbia Bus Co., Inc. (MIDCO) and its affiliate Western States Bus Services, Inc. has announced that on Dec. 18, Susan Hendrickson became vice president of operations for all company pupil transportation operations in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Hendrickson brings 16 years of school bus experiences to MIDCO's pupil transportation headquarters in Pendleton, Hendrickson was the regional operations manager for a national school bus contracting firm with regional headquarters near Portland. As vice president of operations for MIDCO, Hendrickson will be responsible for the operation of more than 400 school buses, transporting approximately 25,000 students to/from school sites in 24 school districts located throughout MIDCO's service area. In addition, she will play a critical role in the company's plan for continued growth and expansion. "The Flatt family and MIDCO are fortunate to have Susan Hendrickson as a new member and key component to what is already recognized as a highly effective and dedicated team of pupil transportation profes sionals," said Flatt. CBEC announces low income emergency assistance program Columbia Basin Electric Cooperative has announced the creation of a low income and emergency energy assistance program. The "Helping Hearts" program will be instituted each November, December, January and February. Participation forms will be included in the invoice envelopes encouraging consumers to contribute to this energy assistance program Administration of the program and allocation of funds raised will be assigned to the Heppner Neighborhood Center for the eastern side of CBEC's service territory and to Condon's Church Street Clearing House for the west side of the territory. People in need of electrical energy assistance should contact these agencies. The co-op has agreed to match funds contributed by its consumers, up to an aggregate amount of $2,000 per winter. P M H , P MC employees fired for thefts Pioneer Memorial Hospital Administrator Victor Vander Does has announced that a hospital employee has been fired for stealing drugs in a sting operation at the hospital. "The Chamber has appreciated the terms served by Tom Sly and Tom Wolff and their many volunteer efforts for the organization," said Claudia Hughes, Chamber executive director. Review set for private applicator exam Two review sessions for those planning to take the ODA exam for the Private Applicator Pesticide License will be offered in February. On Tuesday, Feb. 6, a "Calculations Workshop" will be held from 9-11 a.m. at the Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension Center (HAREC) for those needing assistance with the math portions of the exam. A practice worksheet is available to review prior to the session. On Wednesday, Feb. 7, a"General Review" will be offered from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at BMCC-Hermiston campus which will cover all aspects of the exam except math. Four recertification credits will be available for attending this review training session for those who currently hold a license. The ODA Pesticide Licensing Exam will be offered after lunch at BMCC-Hermiston at 1:30- 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 7. There will be no registration fee for the course, but participants are encouraged to study the Oregon Pesticide Applicator Manual prior to the training session. A limited number of copies are currently available for $14.50 each at the HAREC. Space is limited to 60 participants, so pre-registration is encouraged by calling HAREC at (541)567-8321. Gun Club holds special shoot By Sandi Day The sunshine drove the fog away and brought lots of shooters out to the Morrow County Gun Club for a special shoot on New Year's Eve. At the 16 yard line, Tony Greenup was first with 24 of 25. Harvey Childers took second with 23, Curt Day, Nick Kroske and Mick Sharp tied for third with 21, and Roger Britt was fourth with 20 of 25. The winners of the 20 yard handicap shoot were led by Mick Sharp with 21, Curt Day with 20, Harvey Childers with 19 and Bob Krein and Mickey Kroske tied with 17. Quinn Peck took first in the junior shoot and Chance Day was second. The ladies were hot at the line with Sandi Day taking first, Michelle Scott, second, and newcomers Angela Munkers, Brandi Kroske and Debbie Peck were all tied for third place. Harvey Childers and Nick Kroske each won an Annie Oakley round and Tony Greenup won the golf game. The gun club will begin a new season of shooting on Sunday, Jan. 7, with the annual members' meeting at noon. I
