SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, November 15, 2000 Wedding Foster - Stillman Eric and Shannon Foster Shannon Stillman and Enc Foster were married August 26, 2000, in the Persimmon Hill House at the Persimmon Country Club in Gresham. They spent their honeymoon in Maui, Hawaii. The bride, a controller at Warren Allen King O'Hara Bennett Jepsen and Diamond, LLP, is a graduate of Western Business College. She is the daughter of Randy and Barbara Stillman of Boring. Her grandparents are Lil Boyce, Heppner, the late Roy Boyce, and George and Virginia Stillman. The bridegroom, a trade show coordinator for Boyd Coffee Co., attended Mt. Hood Community College. He is the son of Zona and Dave Monnes, Troutdale, and Terry Foster, Milwaukie. The newlyweds live in Fairview. <Oé6 « y .« u By Merlyn Robinson As the ghoulish Halloween jack o' lantern faces shrink and acquire grotesque expressions, its difficult to imagine how many pumpkin pies could have been made from all that orange meat- - and too there are all those seeds that also went to waste! But hey, that's a mere drop in the bucket to the bounty that this country can produce. Although the Halloween decorations are still visible and its not yet time for a wrestling match with a Thanksgiving turkey, it is time to plan ahead for Christmas. That could include making homemade items, gifting someone with personal services or gift certificates or shopping and more shopping in stores now loaded with all those goodies. I sometimes want to strangle the person that says, "I did my Christmas shopping for the next year, right after Christmas when everything was on sale." Yeah, sure! They must have a fortune teller mentality or they buy that proverbial "one size fits all" for all their recipients. If a vacation cruise for Grandma was purchased before last January, price changes could occur or that cruise ship might sink, or she could be run over by a reindeer on Santa's way back to the North Pole. That hand-crafted candle that was so right for Aunt Sadie, might not be suitable now, since lately she can't remember to turn off the kitchen stove. Or the barbells that Joe said he wanted, were purchased by him during after-Christmas sales. In the blink of an eye, the grandson who wanted a remote control toy airplane, now wants a full-sized four wheeler. Little Susie has outgrown the red flannel nightgown stage and now wears her father's boxers. Sure as you arranged for the gift of a food commodity, like cheese of the month, that person has found out that cheese is plugging his arteries with cholesterol. For some of us mortals, our brain cells only begin to have holiday thoughts when November's chilly weather suddenly swoops in and catches us off guard. Unfortunately, I'm not up to speed with those accomplished souls, who from the comfort of home do their shopping on-line via their computers. It takes several look-see shopping trips for me to even gleam gift ideas. Walking is great physical exercise, of course, even if you come home empty handed with worn-out shoe leather and aching body parts. Although I do have senior women's "mental-pause" symptoms, ideas are beginning to formulate. Home-produced gift ideas are starting to percolate. That brain creativity is definitely less stressful to the mind and body than some of the actual "go-fer" trips I've undertaken of late. Next time I'm sent to fetch parts, I want a complete medical history of that vehicle or piece of machinery. In order to come back with the right hunk of metal or plastic, I need the serial number, make, weight and capacity, as well as the instruction manual, in order to answer questions asked by not-so- knowledgeable clerks. It would also be helpful to have a mechanical dictionary to help translate names of parts, instead of saying the "thingamajig" that fits on the "thingamabob". If this is a mobile unit, one should definitely know how many miles it has traveled backward, sideways and forward. I do know the difference between a crescent wrench and a posthole digger, but living on a ranch doesn't necessarily mean that one has an in-depth knowledge about everything from a backhoe to a "whatchamacallit." Equally exasperating is when you go to pick up said item, pre-ordered by telephone, you are waited on by a sales person that doesn't know what you are talking about. If I get in gear to make some gifts that are now only a figment of my imagination, perhaps 111 have this Christmas thing wrapped up, literally, before we know who the next president will be. It’s sad that this election has turned into a political circus. This isn't a shining example of how our democracy works - - to be joked about or ridiculed by the entire world. M C Health Dept.
