Basketmaking
demo planned
for the fair
Relive history by watching
baskets being made from start to
finish at the Morrow County Fair
on Wednesday, Thursday and
Friday, Aug. 16-18, from
approximately 11 a.m.- 7 p.m.
The
basketmaking
demonstrations are sponsored by
Artisan Village, a new Heppner
business on 288 North Main
Street.
The demonstration will be
outside under the trees near the
Old Beef Bam at the fair. Look
for a striped green and white
canopy.
Each day, in addition to the
basketweaving, there will be a
different display of a specific
grouping of basket types, which
will include some historic
information. Traditional style
baskets from the Appalachians
and colonial days, wicker style
baskets including those from
reed and willow and baskets
representing various Indian tribes
will be on display at some time
during the three days of
demonstrations.
Each person who stops by to
watch and learn may also enter
his or her name for a drawing for
a free basket (one of those made
during the demo time). An
information sheet on the new
business and how to take classes
will also be available.
Demonstrators will be Bonnie
Wenberg, skilled basketmaker
from Artisan Village, which
opens Sunday, Aug. 13, and
Heidi, Nels and Mindy Wenberg.
Bonnie has taken over 50
basket classes, including some
from leading basketmakers in the
United States and also teachers
from Japan and England. She has
taught
basketmaking
in
Wisconsin, Colorado, Vermont,
Michigan,
North
Carolina,
Indiana and Washington at major
basketmaker’s conventions. She
had a basket shop in Arlington,
