Memorial Day is observed in
different ways. In our family we
visit four cemeteries, share our
family history, talk to the
youngest generation about the
reason for hundreds o f American
flags at graves and explain why
the day is important. A bonus is
seeing people we haven't seen for
awhile as we put flowers out.
In Milton-Freewater it was
good to see Charlie and Dorothy

ners moved up on a passed ball
but two strikeouts ended the rally.
Corbett had a 2-0 lead in the
sixth when Kempas lined a single
into left field for the M ustangs’
only hit of the game.
Shelley Rietmann pitched a
good game, allowing just two runs
on four hits, but the Mustangs
couldn’t get the offense going
against Corbett’s Kaitlin Wilson.
Wilson allowed the one hit and one
walk while striking out 14.
It marked the final game for
seniors Miranda McEUigott and
Leah Denton. The Mustangs fin
ished their season with a 12-13
record.
The Heppner Mustangs ended
their softball season with a loss
against the Corbett Cardinals, 2-
0, in the first round o f the State
2A softball playoffs. The game
was moved to Reynolds High
School in Portland because o f a
wet field in Corbett.
The Cardinals were threaten
ing in the second inning with run
ners on second and third with two
out, but senior Leah Denton made
a nice running catch of a fly ball
to short right field to end the in
ning.
Corbett did score a run in the
third on back-to-back doubles.
The Mustangs had their best
chance to score in the top o f the
fourth as Jesse Kempas reached
on an error and Marissa McCabe
walked with one out. Both run-
