After a scoreless eighth, the last out of the previous inning starts the ninth at second base. So with Charissa Gates at second and no outs, Nikki Sisk hit a line drive to left-center that was dropped. As Gates went to third, Sisk moved to second on the throw. Gutierrez then doubled to score both runs and moved to third as McCabe grounded out. Elguezabal then hit a line drive off the third baseman for an infield single to score Gutierrez and make it 7-4. The Bulldogs scored their runner from second, but the Mustangs' defense got the outs to get the win. Rietmann went the distance on the mound, scattering five hits, striking out five and walking just two. Gutierrez went 3 for 5 with three doubles and two RBI and Rietmann helped herself, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI. Elguezabal went 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI. It took nine innings for the Heppner Mustangs to finally beat the Nyssa Bulldogs, 7-5, in Columbia Basin Conference softball action in the first game of a doubleheader at Nyssa on Saturday, April 15. In the second game, the Mustangs were ahead 4-3 with on out a runner on first in the bottom of the third before lighting, thunder and a downpour postponed the game. The win kept the Mustangs in a tie for first place in the CBC at four and one and their overall record moved to 6 and 7. Nyssa took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Mustangs came back with two in the second as San Juanita Elguezabal doubled, moved to third on Leah Denton's ground- out and scored on Shelley Rietmann's double. Tylynn Smith, running for Rietmann, moved to third on a passed ball as Jenni Patton walked. Patton stole second and Smith slid in safe at home as the throw back to home from second was high. Jesse Gutierrez led off the third with a double and Jesse Kempas, pinch running, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored as Marissa McCabe grounded out. Alecia Geer made a nice diving catch of a sinking line drive on the left field foul line to end the third inning with the Mustangs leading 3-1. Rietmann led off the fourth with a double and Smith, running for Rietmann, came around to score as Geer reached on an error. The Mustangs' record now stands at 6 and 6 with the Stanfield Tigers coming to Heppner for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 22, in their first Columbia Basin Conference game. The Eagles scored two runs in the top of the first, but the Mustangs didn't take long to get the lead. Stefan Matheny singled and Michael McCabe hit his first home run of the year to tie it at 2- 2. Stanley Cutsforth singled, followed by Kelly Paullus with his third home run of the year to give the Mustangs a 4-2 lead. Allan Gribskov walked and Josh Hill doubled to put runners at second and third. Mark McElligott reached on an error to score Gnbskov and Matheny got on by another error to score Hill and the Mustangs led 6-2 after one. In the bottom of the second, McCabe got on an error followed by walks to Cutsforth, Paullus and Gribskov to score a run. After a fielder's choice, Paullus was balked in to give the Mustangs an 8-2 lead. The Eagles came back with five runs in the top of the third to get within a run but the Mustangs came back with a couple more runs in the bottom half. Nick Anthony walked, Mc( abe doubled him home, Paullus walked and Gribskov scored McCabe with a single. With the help of a grand slam, the Eagles took an 11-10 lead in the top of the fourth but the Mustangs came back with five of their own to take the lead for good. Zac Fabian got hit by a pitch and McElligott walked and Matheny drove both home with a double. McCabe reached on an error followed by Cutsforth's third home run of the year to make it 15-11. After the Eagles got within 15-12, Cutsforth walked and came around to score as Hill got on by an error. The Eagles added a run in the top of the seventh to make the final score 16-13. McCabe went 2 for 5 with a double, home run and three RBI and Matheny went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBI. Cutsforth went 2 for 2 with a three-run homer and scored three runs. Paullus went 1 for 1 with a two-run homer and scored two runs and Fabian went 1 for 1 and scored a run. Gnbskov had a couple of RBI's. The lone men walked away with two wins and four losses while the women posted four wins and three losses. Jeremy Rietmann lost to Jason Peterson, 1-8. Derek Campbell was unable to come out a victor during his match to Travis Glover, losing 3-8. Aaron Tworek was defeated by Brander Richmond, 3-6. The doubles team of Adam McCabe and Adam Neiffer were overpowered by Jason Peterson and Travis Glover, 3-8. Cameron Krebs and David Mansfeld squeaked out a win against Ben Winn and Daniel Schould, 9-8. Krebs/Mansfeld posted a 7-5 tie breaker score to come out the victor in the last game. Jeremiah McElligott and Colin McElligott easily conquered their opponents, Ryan Harris and Roger Baumann, 6-1. Molly Barrow lost to Rennae Robertson, 1-8. Jennifer Thompson was defeated by Denise Baumann, 2-8. Freshman Caitlin Orem, defeated Amber Gill worth, in a close match, 7-5. Salli McElligott easily defeated Annette Jackson, 6-1. Samantha Wilhelm lost to Trisha Glover, 3- 6 . The doubles team of Molly Barrow and Erin Crowell rallied to defeat Janine Huntsman and Ashley Tubbs, 8-3. Allison Halvorsen and Jennifer Thompson teamed up to beat Annette Jackson and Trisha Glover, 6-3. Coach Cathy McCabe said she was satisfied with the team performance. "We knew that Weston McEwen had some extremely strong players when we started the match,” said McCabe. "Their top two singles players for both men and women have excellent ball hitting skills." lone men, women place fourth in tourney The lone tennis teams traveled to Pendleton on Saturday to participate in a battle of the racquets at the Helix tennis tournament. The team of lone men placed fourth overall, falling behind Sherman County, Umatilla and Mac Hi. In men's singles, Colin McElligott was defeated by number-one seed Cole Shelton of Sherman County, 1-8. In the consolation round Colin McElligott lost to John Magana of Echo, 1-8. Jeremy Rietmann fell to Chuy Martinez, of Riverside, 7-9, in a match that lasted nearly two hours. Rietmann then went into the consolation round to play Routson of Umatilla, falling 2-8. Adam McCabe and Adam Neiffer placed fourth in doubles by defeating Markgraf/Hendncks of Helix, 8-2, in the first round. McCabe/Neiffer fell to Aparacio and Gray of Umatilla, 3-8, in the second round, but battled for a win against Winn/Schuld of Weston-McEwen, 8-4. McCabe/Neiffer advanced to the final round to compete against Peterson/Wnght of Mac Hi, defeating Mac Hi in a close match, 8-6. The doubles team of Cameron Krebs and David Mansfeld succumbed to Sherman County's, Langston/Goodenough, 8-1, in the second round. Krebs/Mansfeld then played off against Peterson/Wnght for the fourth-place semifinals and lost, 7- 9, in a tight match. lone women also brought home some hardware as Molly Barrow and Erin Crowell placed fourth in girls doubles. Barrow/Crowell defeated Kelly/Kinney of Mac Hi, 8-6, in the first round. In the second round, Barrow/Crowell lost to Robledo/Lee of Umatilla, 2-8. Barrow/Crowell then rallied back to defeat Dougherty/Kelly of Mac Hi, 8-5. In girls singles, Salli McElligott fell to Nicole Walters, 8- 5. McElligott then retaliated by defeating Veronica Sahojova of* Stanfield, 8-6. The remainder of the consolation matches were cancelled on account of rain. Freshman, Caitlin Orem defeated Blanca Mendoza of Umatilla, 8-1 in the first round. Orem then advanced to the second round and was defeated by Geri Wolf of Sherman County, 1-8. April 21-22, at the Heppner High School gymnasium. Friday's session will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturday's will be from 9-11 a.m. The workshop will emphasize the basic fundamentals, including proper foot work overhead passing, hitting, approaches, passing platforms and team work. Cost is $25 per player. Cost for a family with two children who wish to participate is an additional $5. Checks should be made out to Annie Hisler and brought in an envelope to the Heppner High School mam office by Thursday, April 20. Those attending are reminded to bring knee pads, water bottles, gym clothes and shoes "and most important, a positive attitude," say organizers. Coaches will be Annie Hisler and Amy Bell. Hisler, a graduate of Heppner High School, is now an athlete V* just finishing up two years playing on the Mt. Hood Community College Volleyball Team. She has 10 years of volleyball experience. She was twice a first team pick for the Columbia Basin Conference, second team CBC; 2A pick for the All State All Star Series; second team All State; second team All State Tournament Team; NWAACC fifth-place finish in 1998; NWAACC runner up in 1999; and the Southern Region runner-up in 1999. Bell, a graduate of Sam Barlow High School, is playing volleyball at Mt. Hood Community College and plans to play next year as well. She has 13 years of volleyball experience. She was first teamm all conference picks her junior and senior years; first team All State Tournament her senior year and second team All State; first team NWAACC in 1999; and second place at NWAACC in 1999.
