HES site council discusses school report cards Heppner Elementary School Principal, Phyllis Danielson, at the Site Council meeting February 8, reported on the school report card. Heppner Elementary received a "Satisfactory" rating. Copies of the district and school report cards have been sent home to each parent. Ethnicity and school participation areas were clarified and a paper was distributed that discussed "frequently asked questions" about the school report cards. A discussion followed on the different ratings for each of the schools. Guest Speaker, Tania Wildbill, special projects coordinator res. development/marketing specialist from the Umatilla-Morrow ESD, discussed "grant writing" with members of the council. Wildbill explained the need to have a concrete idea and then build the grant around that idea. She stated that a thorough budget and accounting for every dollar are vital. Major support for the project is also necessary. It was discussed that HES might be interested in improving, the school report card rating. Visiting schools that received an "Exceptional Rating" and seeing what worked for those schools would be important, the council determined Wildbill said she will read the grant and help write it once a specific idea and funding source have been identified. The council showed "a lot of enthusiasm" for visiting "Exceptional" schools. Danielson said she will attempt arrangement of visitations. Wildbill also shared information on the Oregon Reading Summit, March 10-11, regarding reading programs put on by the Oregon Department of Education. This is a free workshop. The next meeting of the Heppner Elementary Site Council will be March 6, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the HES Library. The public is invited to attend. I The Heppner FFA club took a field trip to Hermiston to visit the District FFA Creed Speaking Contest on Jan. 27. The trip was a learning experience for members. They could see what the event was like and how to do well in it in following years. The contest consisted of two parts, the speaking of the FFA Creed and then individual presentations on an agricultural issue. Thirteen people gave the creed and five gave presentations at the competition this year. The Heppner FFA also made an appearance at the MCGG Appreciation Day Breakfast. Members Josh Hill, Tracy Baker, Cory Miller and Dan Jepsen showed up to help run the kids' tricycle course. A couple members even tried out the course themselves, though they didn't receive a free ice cream cone certificate like everyone else. This past Wednesday the FFA had its second bowling and pizza party. Members had a good time, even if none of their scores exceeded 120. The next event coming up is the State FFA Convention in Ontario to be held this spring. Members must pass qualifications to attend. ciV e d cU n ç / Meeting your spring seed needs with: A llis o n P a r k s & R y a n R u d o l f PEN EW A W A an d ALPOW A C e rtifie d , tr e a te d w ith VITAVAX-RTU w ith o r w ith o u t LINDANE W edding: .MLarck 18, 2000 ^ A n g e la C u r r in & ^Nate W ill ia m s W edding: A p ril 8, 2000 ^ MuMUj'J D m j . 217 North Main • Heppner • 676-9158 Call and reserve your seed for your planting needs now!
