Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 16, 2000 Mustang boys lose to number four Bulldogs Mustang girls beat Bulldogs with long ball By Kick Paullus The Culver bulldogs showed why they are the fourth- ranked team in the state, using a 23-0 run at the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second to beat the Heppner Mustangs, 66-46, on Saturday Feb. 12. The Mustangs' CBC record falls to 6-5 and their overall record is now 13-10 with their last league game at Wahtonka on Saturday, Feb 19 The Bulldogs led 4-0 when Rvan Matteson hit two straight long three pointers to give the Mustangs a 6-4 lead. Michael McCabe scored on a drive and lay-in to make a it 10-8 when the Bulldogs scored the final 14 points of the quarter and then hit three pointers to start the second to take a 33-8 lead Stefan Matheny hit a three- pointer. McCabe hit a running jumper and Joe Papineau scored to make it 33-15. The Bulldogs led 36-19 at halftime and stretched it to 43-19 before Papineau hit consecutive jumpers to cut it to 43-23. The Bulldogs led 47-27 when Matteson scored on a baseline drive and Papineau hit another short jumper to get within 47-31. The Mustangs trailed, 55-31, when Clint Bellamy, playing in his last home game, hit a jumper. McCabe hit a long three-pointer and Papineau and Knowles scored on rebound baskets to make it 59-41. T hat was as close as the Mustangs could get, though, as the Bulldogs coasted for the win. McCabe led the Mustangs with 15 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Papineau had 11 points and seven rebounds and Matteson had eight points and two assists. Knowles had seven points and seven rebounds and Matheny and Craig Scott each had two assists. By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang "C" Team girls won two games in a row and have won three of their iast five with one game left. On Tuesday, Feb. 8, the Mustangs beat the Weston McEwen Tigerscots, 40-34, and on Thursday, Feb. 10. they beat the Mac-Hi Pioneers. 28-18. Both games w ere in Heppner. Against the Tigerscots the Mustangs took a 20-14 lead at halftime and got six points from Kelsey Greenup in the third and six more from Marcy Miller in the fourth to hang on for the win. Greenup, Miller and Paula Spicerkuhn each finished with eight points and Jesse Kempas and Cindy Gall each had six points for the Mustangs. The Mustangs raced out to a 15-3 lead after one against the Pioneers, getting six points from Greenup and four from Nikki Sisk and led 16-9 at halftime. Kempas hit a three- pointer in the fourth as the Mustangs held on for the 10- point w in. Charma has apparently suffered no damage to her memory and is now walking with a "quad" cane, according to a relative. Parking is on Marshall #2 up to Level G. ood T o L Ashley Ropp hit six three-pointers and Marissa McCabe, two, as the Heppner Mustangs beat the visiting Culver Bulldogs, 57-31, in their final home game. The Mustangs improved their CBC record to 8- 3 and 15-8 overall with one more league game at Wahtonka on Saturday, Feb. 19. The game marked the final home game for seniors Ropp, Casey Ingraham, Trisha Adams, Amy Papineau and Macy Rhea Ingraham started the game with a jumper and Ropp hit her first three to give the Mustangs a quick 5-0 lead. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way as Shelley Rietmann scored six points and Ropp hit another three to help the Mustangs take a 16-12 lead after one. Ropp hit another three and two free throws to make it 21-13. McCabe scored on a nice pass from Lacey Matteson, then hit her first three-pointer to make it 26-13. Adams hit two free throws and a rebound basket and Ropp hit a three to end the first half with the Mustangs leading, 33-15. Rietmann completed a three-point play and Ingraham hit two free throws and a long jumper to make it 40-17. Ropp hit another three and Papineau hit two free throws. Ingraham scored, McCabe scored on a rebound basket and Matteson had a steal and lay-in to make it 51- 22 at the end of the third quarter. McCabe and Ropp hit three-pointers for the Mustangs' only points in the fourth quarter, but the big lead held up and the Mustangs coasted for the win. Ropp finished and McCabe finished with 10 points and four rebounds. Ingraham had 10 points and five rebounds and Rietmann had nine points and 14 rebounds, nine offensive. Feb. 11 and hosted Columbia on Saturday. On Friday, the seventh grade girls beat Pilot Rock, 26-21. behind 14 points from Chelsea Britt. The Ponies were ahead 13- 9 at half-time and never looked back. Shanna Rietmann and Linsey Mitchell scored six points apiece in the game. At home on Saturday, the seventh graders came out shooting very cold and fell behind 14-7 at the half. Their cold shooting continued into the second half and they lost,24-43-. Rietmann and Madison Bailey each scoring two points Seventh grade coach Tim VanCleave said, "We shot pretty poorly but other than that we played well." Heppner was only 3-14 from the free-throw line. The loss drops the Ponies to 7-2 on the season with one game left The eighth grade girls lost to Pilot Rock on Friday. 58-11. I he Ponies held it close in the first quarter with the score 13-6 after one. But in the second quarter Pilot Rock pulled away for good, outscoring Heppner, 24-0, in the I n O ive regon quarter. The Ponies were led by Jessica Westburg’s six points followed by Stephanie Hanson and Blake Allstott with two points apiece. Danielle Looslie also had one point in the game. Saturday, Heppner played Columbia and. like in Friday's game, stuck close to the Raiders for the first quarter but just couldn't hang on. The Ponies were down by only four at the er d of the first quarter. 4-0. but were down 15-5 at the half. Columbia then coasted to a 27-9 victory. Looslie led Heppner with four points, followed by Brooke Rust and Sheena Shank who scored two points each, followed by Hanson's one point. Each team has one game left at home against Stanfield Friday. Feb. IS, at 3 p.m. Each team uill also play in a season finale tournament Saturday. Feb. 19.
