Oregon Wednesday February 9, 2000 Poor shooting spells defeat for Mustang girls Bv Rick Paullus Poor shooting in the first half spelled defeat to the Heppner Mustang girls as the visiting Sherman County Huskies held on for a 38-33 win in a battle for first place in the Columbia Basin Conference. The Mustangs' CBC record falls to 6-3 and their overall record to 13-8. In a slow-starting first quarter, the Huskies took a 4-0 lead with about four minutes gone but Casey Ingraham hit a jumper to finally get the Mustangs on the board. Amy Papineau hit two free throws to tie the game at 4-4 and Ingraham made a lay-m to close out the first quarter with the Mustangs leading 6-4. The Huskies came out in the second quarter with the first 11 points before Shelley Rietmann hit two free throws to make it 15-8. Ingraham scored on a nice pass from Papineau and San Juanita Elguezabal made a baseline lay-in to narrow the lead to 19-14, but the Huskies came back with four straight to make it 23-14. Papineau hit a turn around jumper and Ingraham scored, but the Huskies still led 27-18 after three. The Huskies scored the first basket of the fourth quarter to take an 11-point lead but the Mustangs wouldn't give up as Lacey Matteson hit two free throws and Ingraham scored to make it 29-22. Papineau hit 3-4 free throws to make it 31-25 but the Huskies came back to take a 10- point lead. Papineau and Ingraham hit jumpers to make it 35-29 and Ingraham hit a running baseline jumper and then a long jumper from the top of the key to make it 35-33 with less than a minute left. The Huskies then made enough free throws to hang on for the win. Ingraham led the Mustangs with 16 points, eight in the fourth quarter, and had five rebounds and three steals, Papineau had nine points, five rebounds and three steals. Trisha Adams had six rebounds and Ashley Ropp had five assists. Barber, Patton. 12 9- 13 33. 3pt.-none By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang JV boys lost a close game at Culver on Friday, Feb. 4, 50-47. and came home on Saturday to lose to the Sherman County Huskies, 66-59 At Culver the Mustangs trailed 11-9 after one, but got five points from Brian Rust and four from San VanLiew to explode for a 26-14 lead at half time. Chip Piper scored six points in the third as the teams played an even quarter, but the Bulldogs outscored the Mustangs, 22-7, in the fourth to nip the Mustangs at the end. Rust hit two three pointers and finished with 14 points to lead the Mustangs. Piper finished with 10 points and VanLiew had eight. Sherman County, shooting a very high percentage, jumped out to a 23-5 lead after one but the Mustangs got eight points from Brad Adams and five from Rust, including a long three- pointer to get with 33-28 at halftime. The Huskies came out in the third to increase their lead to 50-37, but the Mustangs didn't The Heppner Mustang JV girls lost a close game at Culver, 32- 28, on Friday, Feb.4, but came home on Saturday to beat the Sherman County Huskies, 43-31, as their record goes to 12-4 for the year. Against the Bulldogs, the Mustangs trailed 13-10 at halftime. They got eight points from Jodie Carlson in the third to stay within 24-21 going into the fourth but couldn't make up the difference. Carlson finished with 10 points, six rebounds and an assist. Meghan Bailey had 10 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Jesse Gutierrez had two three-pointers for six points and had two steals. Against the Huskies, Bailey had six points in the first quarter as the Mustangs went out to a 14-11 lead. The Mustangs kept up the pressure in the second, running to a 28-16 lead at halftime. The Huskies tried to rally in the second half, but Gutierrez hit two three-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs The Heppner Mustangs used a stifling defense and good rebounding to beat the visiting Sherman County Huskies, 46-34, on Saturday, Feb. 5. The win improves the Mustangs' CBC record to 5-4 and their over record to 12-9. The Mustangs will travel to Weston-McEwen on Friday and host the Culver Bulldogs in the last home game of the year Saturday. Joe Papineau got the Mustangs on the board early, only to see the Huskies come back with the next nine points to take a 9-2 lead. Papineau hit a lay-in and Blake Knowles scored on a rebound basket to make it 9-6. Then Clint Bellamy hit a jumper and Michael McCabe converted a three-point play to tie the game at 11-11. Stefan Matheny hit a running jumper and Ryan Matteson scored on a nice pass from McCabe before the Huskies came back to make it 15-14. McCabe hit a fee throw and Bellamy hit another jumper to close out the first quarter with Mustangs leading 18-14. McCabe hit a jumper to start the second quarter and Papineau scored on a lay-in on a nice pass from Brian Rust to make it 22-14 Craig Scott hit a running jumper to make it 25-18 and Rust hit two free throws to make it 27-22. After a Sherman County free throw the Mustangs led 27-23 at halftime. A three-pointer by Matheny made it 30-25 and a Papineau rebound basket made it 32-27, but the three-pointer by the » give up, getting eight points, including a three-pointer, from Kelly Paullus. They got within five a couple of times but couldn't catch up. Brad Adams finished with 18 points to lead the Mustangs followed by Rust with 13 and Paullus with eight. After a Husky basket, McCabe hit two free throws with 10 seconds left to provide the final score of 46-34. Papineau hit 5-8 shots and led the Mustangs with 11 and pulled down seven rebounds. Knowles had nine points on 4-6 shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds. McCabe had a solid game with eight points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals, and Matheny finished with seven points.
