Back on Dec. 3. the Umatilla Vikings ran over the Heppner Mustangs. 89-60. but on Tuesday. Dec. 14. it was the Mus tangs returning the tavor on their home court with a convincing 57- 39 win. The Mustangs used a combi nation of good defense and good shooting to get the win. Ryan Matteson scored five points in the first quarter as Heppner took a 17-14 lead after one. The Vikings came back to tie it at 29-29 at halftime before the Mustangs' defense clamped down. M atteson and Michael McCabe each scored five points in the third quarter as the Mus tangs built a 47-36 lead. The Mus tangs held the Vikings to three points in the fourth quarter for the win. The win improved the Mus tangs preseason record to 3-4. McCabe led the Mustangs with 13 points. 10 rebounds, six steals and three assists. Joe Papineau had 12 points and eight rebounds. Matteson ended up with 10 points and three assists. Clint Bellamy had eight points on 4-4 shooting and Blake Knowles had eight re bounds and six steals. Heppner JV girls stay unbeaten By Rick Paullus Hie Heppner Mustang A girls stayed unbeaten at 5-0 by defeat ing the visiting Umatilla Vikings. 58-53. on Tuesday. Dec. 14. The Mustangs fell behind 12-9 after one. but Jesse Gutierrez ex ploded for 13 points m the second quarter to help Heppner to a 29- 28 halftime lead. Brett Barber scored seven points and Meghan Bailey, five, including a three-pointer, in the third quarter as the Mustangs in creased their lead to 46-38. The Vikings tried to come back, but Shelley Rietmann scored all of her seven points in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs held on for the win. Barber led the Mustangs with 17 points, including two three- pointers. Gutierrez hit three three- pomters on her way to 14 points. Bailey finished with nine. Mustang JV boys beat Cardinals By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang boys’ JV team used a huge fourth quar ter to beat the visiting lone Cardi nals, 61-32, on Thursday. Dec. 16. The win avenged an earlier defeat at lone and improved the Mustangs' record to 4-3. After an even first quarter, the Mustangs pulled ahead in the sec ond to lead 23-16 at halftime. The Mustangs built a 10 point lead in the third quarter, but the Cardinals came back to trail 38- 32 after three. Heppner outscored lone 23-7 in the fourth to pull away for the win. Chip Piper led the Mustangs with 15 points, including nine of 10 from the free throw line. Brian Rust scored 13 points and Brad Adams finished with 10. The Mustangs made 21-31 free throws as a team. Kevin Drake 1 0-0 2, Brad Bowman. 20 21-31 61 Mustangs win The Heppner Preschool four-year-old class treated Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home residents to a concert of Christmas carols on Monday, December 21. The children were accompanied by Heppner Davcare/Preschool director Merry Brannon and numerous helpers. Merry Christmas Moon K» t*y vV * VV I- The Heppner Mustangs triumphed with a 39-61 win over the lone Cardinals on December 16 in Heppner. The lone men were tied with Heppner at the end of the first quarter but by halftime were down seven points for a score of 23-16. Adam McCabe led the lone effort with 12 points, followed by Jeremy Rietmann with 10 points. Rietmann canned two three-point shots in the second half in an attempt to keep pace with the Mustangs. Adam Neiffer led the team in rebounds and had three steals for lone. The Cardinals shot 30 percent from the floor, compared to Heppner's 26 percent, but the Mustangs had more success at the free throw line, shooting 68 percent, while the Cardinals shot 29 percent. Church services set Christmas eve, Christmas day Episcopal with Pastor Dick Metz. The service will include Holy Communion. An 11 p.m. candlelight service, with Holy Communion, will be heid at All Saints Episcopal Church in Heppner on Christmas Eve. Friday. December 24. Pastor Dick Metz will officiate. St. William’s Catholic Church All Saints Church LCC-Condon A Lutheran Christmas Eve service will be heid at the UCC Church in Condon on Friday, December 24. at 2 p.m. with Pastor Dick Metz. Hie special candlelight service will include Holy Communion. Hope Lutheran Church Services will be held at Hope Lutheran Church in Heppner on Christmas Eve. Friday. December 24. at 9 p.m. Pastor is the Rev. Dick Metz. The candlelight service will include Holy Communion. A New ’t ears Eve service is also planned at the church on Friday. December 31. at 7 p.m. St. Patrick's Catholic Church A Christmas Eve Mass at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Heppner will begin with Christmas carols at 8:30 p.m. Friday. December 24. followed by the Procession of Lights at 9 p.m.. the Blessing of the Manger Scene and then the Vigil Mass. Christmas Mass will be held on Christmas Day. Saturday, December 25. at 11 a.m. Valby Lutheran Church Christmas Eve candlelight services will be held at Valby Lutheran Church in lone on Friday, December 24, at 6 p.m. A big bright full moon, looking like an enormous silver Christmas ball in the sky. peeks out from behind the Morrow County Courthouse, decorated in its Christmas finery. The moon this week is reported to he the closest to the earth and the biggest and brightest in many years. The courthouse is dressed up for Christmas this year, both inside and oul. Morrow County District Attorney David C. Allen donated the icicle lights on the front windows: the Historical Society donated metal brackets for the Christmas wreaths; and Commissioner Dan Brosnan and employees, both indis¡dually and through their "pop fund", added to the Christmas decor. "It’s really generous," said Morrow County personnel director Andrea Denton. "We jus» had a bunch of employees who decided the courthouse should he decorated." The Heppner Mustang “C” team girls got a late free throw from LaRena Penturf to nip the lone Cardinals, 33-31, in lone on Tuesday, Dec. 14. The Mustangs dominated the first half, building a 19-7 lead, but the Cardinals outscored Heppner 14-4 in the third quarter to get back in the game. Marcy M iller scored four points in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs got the win. The wm was the First of the lone Cnited Church of Christ The lone United Church of Christ will offer a candlelight service on Christmas Eve at 10 p.m. at St. William's Catholic Church in lone. The theme of the service will be "Christmas Blessings". weaving the Christmas story with the blessings and beatitudes found in the Gospels. Everyone is welcome to worship on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. with a time for coffee and conversation after the service. A special after- Christmas family service will be held on December 26. and January 2 will be the first worship service of the year 2000. Sunday School will begin again on January 9 at the usual time of 9:45 a.m. at the Christian Education Building at the comer of Main and 'E' streets, and children's choir practice will resume on January 13 at 3:45 p.m. First Christian Church Serv ices at the Heppner First Christian Church are at 9:45 a.m. for Bible school and 11 a.m. for worship service. HHS JV boys get revenge on Vikings Kevin Drake had eight points. By Rick Paullus A week and a half ago. the Heppner Mustang JV boys suf fered a 32-point loss to the Umatilla Vikings. On Tuesday, Dec. 14, the Mustangs built a 46- 30 lead before settling for a 58-52 win to gain some revenge. Brian Rust scored five of his 10 points in the first quarter as the Mustangs led 15-9 after one. Sam Van Liew scored eight points in the second to help the Mustangs to a 33-21 lead at halftime. The Vikings mounted a come back in the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs made enough free throws to hang on for the win. Van Liew finished with a game- high 17 points and Chip Piper added 11 Rust scored 10 and Lady Cardinals beat Mustangs The lone Lady cardinals showed their talents by defeating the Heppner Mustangs 35-18 on December 16 in Heppner. . lone started out the game with three points over Heppner at the end of the first quarter and continued to out-score the Mustangs each quarter after. Freshman Olivia Thompson was the lead scorer with eight points. "Thompson moves at the speed of light and was able to rob three steals from the Mustangs, said an lone spokesperson. Sophomore Salli McElligott had four steals to her credit, while Kristina Powell and Jeanette Brantley brought down 10 rebounds each. The Cardinals played a consistent game and worked the ball really well, they said. C-team girls nip lone Cardinals By Rick Paullus Christmas Mass will be held on Christmas Day. Saturday. Umatilla- 9,, 12 Obituaries Boyd Redding Boyd Redding. 81, died Mon day, November 29, 1999, at Las Vegas, Nevada. Mr. Redding was bom May 1, 1918, at Eightmile. He graduated from Heppner High School before serving in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was manager o f a bank at Santa Monica, California when he re tired in 1981 and spend the fol lowing years traveling with his wife in their motor home. He is survived by his wife, for merly Lois Ashbaugh; sons. Randall of Sausalito. California. K. Mason of Ventura. California: daughter. Shan Sheehan of Lake Havasu City, Arizona: and grand son Michael Sheehan of Mission Viejo. California. Marjorie L. Wright Maijone L. Wnght. 85. passed away on December 9. 1999. at Everett General Hospital. Everett Washington. Disposition was by cremation. A graveside service at the Heppner Masonic Cemetery is planned for a later date. Mrs. Wright was bom January 1. 1914 in Wasco, to Henry and Vera Happold. They moved to Heppner where Marjone grew up and attended school. She graduated from Heppner High School in 1931. On August 11. 1934. Marjorie married Oral Wright, also of Heppner They had three daughters. Marjone and Oral had a special relationship spanning 65 years. Together, they enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and boating and many good friends. Survivors include husband. Oral: three daughters. Lynn Wright Haguewood of Olympia Washington. Nancy Wnght Huffman of Palm Bay. Flonda. and Deanna Wnght Bellamy of Bothell. Washington; 11 grandchildren. 12 great grandchildren and one great- great-grandchild. She was predeceased in death by her parents and a sister, Betty.
