FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 8, 1999 Mustangs drop first game to Blue Devils by Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang boys' basketball team dropped their opening pre-season game to the visiting Condon Blue Devils, 71 to 66, on Tuesday, Nov. 30. With both teams getting late starts because of advancing in the football play-offs, there were plenty of fouls and turnovers by both teams. Craig Scott got the Mustangs going, hitting a pump shot for the first points of the game. The Mustangs got seven points from Stefan Matheny to take a 17-16 lead after one. Travis Camine scored half the Blue Devils points in the quarter. Ryan Matteson hit a lay-in after a nice pass from Scott to start the second quarter. After a Condon basket, Scott scored and Matteson hit two free throws to give the Mustangs their biggest lead of the game at 23-18. The Blue Devils then went on a 13-3 run before Michael McCabe hit a layin on a nice pass from Scott to end the first half with the Mustangs down 31-28. Condon increased their lead to 49-39 after three and led 55-41 with 6:00 left in the game before the Mustangs began a comeback. Blake Knowles hit two free throws and a short jumper and Scott hit two more free throws to make it 55-47. After a basket by Camine, Knowles and Joe Papmeau each scored on rebound baskets to get within 59-51. Two Blue Devil baskets sandwiched around a Matheny three-pointer made it 61-54 and Papmeau and McCabe each hit two free throws to get the Mustangs to within 61- 58. The Mustangs could get no closer as the Blue Devils held on for the win. Matteson hit 11 of 14 free throws and finished with a game high 19 points and four steals. Matheny ended up with 12 points and Knowles finished with 11. Papmeau had eight points and six rebounds and Scott and McCabe each had eight points and three assists. Mustang girls nipped by Blue Devils, 46-43 by Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang Girls basketball team came close to knocking off the three-time defending 1A state champion Condon Blue Devils but couldn't quite get over the hump, losing 46-43 at Heppner on Tuesday, Nov. 30. The Mustangs held a 12-9 lead after one but the Blue Devils came back to lead 25-23 at halftime. The Mustangs got within one twice late in the game and had a chance to tie at the end, but couldn't get their shots to fall. Casey Ingraham led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points and two assists, Shelley Rietmann had 11 and SanJuamta Elguezebal had five points and two steals. Freshman Lacy Matteson hit a three-pointer and finished with seven points and Ashley Ropp also hit a three- pointer to finish with six points. Marissa McCabe grabbed nine rebounds. Mustangs fall short at Joseph Ingraham leads Mustangs by Rick Paullus over Vikings, 65-47 After making the long trip to Joseph the Mustangs fell behind early and couldn't quite catch up, losing to the Eagles, 76-66, to drop to 0 and 3 on the season. The Mustangs next travel to Cpndon to play in the Condon Tournament and will face Prairie City in the first game on Friday. Michael McCabe scored six points in the first quarter as the Mustangs fell behind 25-16 after one. Joseph kept the pressure on, taking a 46-27 lead at halftime. Ryan Matteson hit two three- pointers and finshed with 12 points in the third as the Mustangs played the Easles even. MCabe scored 13 points in the fourth as the Mustangs got to vMthin eight but could get no closer, finally losing by 10. McCabe finished with a game- high 25 points for the Mustangs. He also grabbed 10 rebounds, had three assists and two steals. Matteson finished with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals, Joe Papmeau scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds. The loss dropped the Mustangs record to one and one on the year. David Piper led the Mustangs with seven points. Brad Adams added six. The ribn-teiigue win evens the Mustangs' record at one and one for the young season. The Mustangs and Vikings played to an 11-11 tie after one quarter as Marissa McCabe hit a three pointer, Shelley Rietmann hit on a rebound basket and Ingraham hit a long jumper. Heppner got hot in the second as Amy Papmeau scored on a nice pass from Ingraham. Ingraham hit a jumper and Ashley Ropp hit a long three- pointer to give the Mustangs an 18-13 lead. Trish Adams hit a lay-in on another nice pass from Ingraham. Ingraham hit on a three-point play, Ropp hit two free throws and McCabe scored on a rebound basket to give the Mustangs a 27-18 lead. After a viking basket, Meghan Bailey scored on a rebound basket to give the Mustangs a 29- 20 lead. The teams traded free throws the rest of the way as the Mustangs took a 35-29 lead into halftime. The Mustangs ran off 14 straight points to start the third quarter to take a 49-29 lead as Ingraham hit a three-pointer to start the run and got a steal and lay-in to end it. The Vikings stayed close by outsconng Heppner 9-12 the rest of the way, but the Mustnags took a 51-38 lead after three. Ingraham started the fourth quarter with a three-pointer as the Mustangs wasted no time in rebuilding their lead. SanJuamta Elguezabal hit a free throw and Lacey Matteson, Rietmann and Ingraham each scored to make it a 6 1-41 lead. The Vikings scored five straight but a Papmeau basket made it 63-46. Elguezabal ended the game just as she started it by hitting two free throws to make the final score 65-47. After Ingraham's 26 points, Rietmann ended up with nine points and three steals and Elguezabal added seven points and seven rebounds. McCabe grabbed nine rebounds and Ropp dished out three assists. Mustangs lose to Vikings by Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustangs couldn't stay with the hot- shooting class 3A Umatilla Vikings and lost 89-60 to drop to 0 and 2 in the young season. Ryan Matteson hit a jumper early to tie the game at 2-2 but the Vikings ran off 11 straight before Blake Knowles scored on a three-point-play to cut the lead o 13-5. Stefan Matheny hit a running jumper to make it 16-7 and Matteson hit a free throw', Matheny another running jumper and McCabe hit a jumper to cut the lead to 18-12. Scott scored four points down the stretch as the Vikings took a 26-16 lead after one. The Vikings scored five straight before Matteson hit two free throws and McCabe scored to cut the lead to 31-22. McCabe hit three free-throws to cut the lead to 33-25 but the Vikings scored the final eight points to take a 41-25 lead at halftime. The Vikings continued their run, scoring the first 15 points of the third before Knowles hit a jumper and added two free throws to cut the lead to 56-29. Matteson hit a three pointer, and Mustang 'C Clint Bellamy and Scott scored to make it 60-36. Scott and Matheny each scored at the end of the quarter to make the score 66-40 after three. The Mustangs played fairly even with the Vikings in the fourth, but it was too late as Umatilla won, 89 to 60. Knowles led the Mustangs with 14 points and eight rebounds. Matteson score 12 points and had three steals and McCabe scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Matheny scored eight and Scott also had eight and dished out four assists. The Pirates took a lead in the fourth, but the Mustangs battled back to tie as Paula Spicerkuhn hit a three-pomter and a jumper by Kelsie Greenup sent the game to overtime. Spicerkuhn scored four points in overtime as both teams traded the lead. A three-point play by the Pirates with three seconds left gave them the win. Spicerkuhn scored 10 points and Jesse Kempas scored eight and hit a three-pomter for the Mustangs. Cindy Gall rebounded well and added six points. The win moved the Mustangs' early non-league record to two and one. Casey Ingraham scored seven of her game-high 14 points as the Musangs outscored the E-Gals, 9-5, in the second to take a 26-15 lead at halftime. Ashley Ropp hit her second three-ponter of the half during the run. The Mustangs didn't let up in the third quarter, outsconng Joseph 11-2 as Ingraham added seven more. Lacy Matteson added six points including a three-pomter, in the fourth as the Mustangs increased their lead to the final score of 53- 26.
