The Odd Fellows have pledged a donation of $5,000 a year for five years to WCVALC. The group plans to build an assisted living center in Heppner. "I really think this is awesome," said Woodside. "Five thousand each year for five years is quite a commitment." Woodside said the plans for the assisted living center are progressing and the group is connecting with and architectural consultant. WCVALC plans a funding meeting at the end of the month. Firewood season still open Firewood cutting areas on the south half of the forest-the Heppner and North Fork John Day Ranger Districts-will remain open until November 30. The industrial fire precaution level for the south half of the Umatilla National Forest will remain at a Level II. This requires all woodcutters and others using power equipment on the Umatilla National Forest to shut down between 1-8 p.m. and stay in the area of activity for one hour afterwards for fire watch. All woodcutters are required to carry a shovel and 8oz. capacity fire extinguisher. Power saws must be equipped with an approved spark arrestor. The public can obtain current IFPL information by calling any Umatilla National Forest Office or the forest's 24-hour information message phone at (541)276-3405. Permits are available at all Umatilla National Forest offices. Permits will also be available at several local businesses in the area, including Heppner Chevron. lone Youth Group plans food drive lone Youth Group members and helpers will be going door to door in lone Sunday, October 31, collecting food donations for the Neighborhood Center. They will begin collecting at 5 p.m. Church members living out oi town may leave their donations at St. William's Catholic Church where the youth will meet to organize the food drive. Anyone who will not be home that evening is encouraged to leave their donation, clearly marked for the Neighborhood Center, by their front door. Horse clinic scheduled The Martingale 4-H and Lex ington Ranch Horse clubs are sponsoring a horse clinic on Sat urday, Oct. 23, and a family playday on Sunday, Oct. 24 at the Morrow County Fairgrounds. The clinic and playday will start at 1 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend, but children must wear an ap proved riding helmet and riding boots. For more information, contact Karen Temple at 989-8181. Buttercreek Crown bearers were Devin Robinson, son of Darcy and Kyle Robinson, and Taighler Dougherty, daughter of Cliff and Dawna Dougherty. lone High School crowns homecoming court Morrow County, Heppner, Oregon Lexington says yes to water projects The town of Lexington said yes Tuesday for two water projects that will cost approximately $120,000. In a non-binding advisory vote Lexington residents voted 81 yes to 33 no in favor of a $75,000 loan for the town to make repairs to the water system. They also voted 81 yes to 20 no for a $45,000 loan for improvements to the town wells and cistern. If the loans are taken out and the work done, water users in the town will pay an additional $10.04 per month for 10 years. In addition to the water measures, town residents said they wanted Glenn Anderson to fill a vacant town council seat. Voting was 65 votes for Anderson and 46 votes for Robert Taylor, the only other person on the ballot. Again, the voting is a non-binding advisory vote only. Fire Dept. Aux. organizing In other town business Mayor John Renfro announced a new effort to form a fire department auxiliary for fund raising and other work. Anyone interested should contact Luella Taylor at 989-8508. Renfro also said that applications for town fire chief are still being accepted. Town logo contest A contest to adopt a town logo for Lexington is also being held. Anyone who wishes to submit a logo should drop it off at the town hall. MCGG to hold annual meeting The Morrow County Gram Growers will hold their annual meeting Monday, Nov. 1 at the Morrow County Fairgrounds in Heppner. Dinner will be served beginning at 6:30 p in. and the meeting will include election of directors and reports from officers. Babysitting will be provided. Legion, Aux. to meet The Heppner American Legion and Auxiliary will meet on Mon day, Oct. 25 at the Methodist Church basement for a potluck dinner starting at 6:30 p.m. Plans will be made for the veteran's gift shop A district officer will install the Heppner Legion officers for the year 1999-2000. Members and prospective members are welcome to attend. Legion, Auxiliary host district meeting The lone American Legion and Auxiliary hosted the District 6 meeting on Oct. 9. Members present were from Baker, LaGrande. Milton-Free- water, Hermiston and Heppner. After lunch. District 6 President HHS plans potato feed The Heppner High School Senior Class has planned a potato feed this Friday, October 22, at the fairgrounds annex building before the Mustang football game versus Stanfield. The potato feed will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Cost for a baked potato with chili, a brownie and coffee or punch is $3.50. A potato without chili, including dessert and a drink is $3. Everyone is invited to attend Proceeds will go toward the Class of 2000 senior trip Bob Flanery called a joint meet ing of auxiliary and legion mem bers. Later, he dismissed the aux iliary so they could have their meeting. District 6 President Myrtle Hom called the auxiliary meeting to order. During the business meeting, the president announced that lone was the first in the dis trict to reach their goal in mem bership. Anyone in the lone area who would like to join the auxiliary max contact any auxiliary member for an application. Missionary potluck set at Lexington Baptist A Missionary Potluck Dinner at Lexington Baptist Church will be held on Sunday night, October 24, at 6 p.m. Dave and Clarice Johnson, missionaries to Cote’d’ Ivoire, also known as the Ivory Coast, will be the special guests. The Johnsons have been in Ivory Coast for the past six years and are currently on home assignment. Dave, a former teacher from Sherman County, is a teacher at the International Christian Academy. Clarice serves as a mission station hostess. They will be sharing about their work and showing a video after the meal. Everyone is invited to attend, and may bring a main dish and a salad or dessert to share at the potluck. Lexington Baptist is located at 170 B Street in Lexington.
