EIGHT - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, September 22, 1999 Mustangs' second half beats 3A Bulldogs By R ick Paullus The Heppner Mustangs' defense shut down the Baker Bulldogs in the second half to •come away with a 42-20 non- league win The sixth ranked class 2A Mustangs out-gained the visiting class 3A Bulldogs 120 yards to just 11 total > ards in the third quarter to pull away Things didn't look good for the Mustangs early in the game as the Bulldogs Omn Bigelow took a handoff on the first play and raced 58 y ards for a touchdown Josh Johnson's extra point kick gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead just 18 seconds into the game The Mustangs then gave the ball back to the Bulldogs at their own 43-yard line after a fumble The defense held and Baker's punt was downed at the Mustang one-y ard line Craig Scott and Michael Schonbachler rushes and a Bulldog penalty moved the ball but another fumble gave the ball back to the Bulldogs at Heppner's 27 yard line The defense held again and Joe Papincau knocked down a pass on fourth down to give the Mustangs the ball at their own 18-yard line The Mustangs' offense was unable to move the ball and Baker took ov er at their own 48 after a punt Scott then intercepted a pass and returned it 16 yards to the 47 of Baker On third and long Michael McCabe took a screen pass for 15 yards and a first down. McCabe then ran a draw play for 27 yards to the five yard line Ryan Matteson ran for one. then McCabe took it into the end /one from four yards out Blake Knowles kicked the extra point to tic the game at 7-7 with 10:00 minutes left in the second quarter The Bulldogs got good field position at the 45 of Heppner after a failed onside kick The Mustangs' defense held and a fake punt on fourth down came up short and Heppner took over at their own 37 Schonbachler ran for eight and Scott for four more and a first down McCabe ran for 12 and Schonbachler for 12 more Matteson got two y ards then hit Papincau who made a juggling circus catch for a first down at the 18 Scott picked up 16 and Schonbachler got the ball down to the six inch line Matteson then punched it in for the go- ahead touchdown Knowles kick was good to give the Mustangs a 14-7 lead with 3:42 left in the first half The Bulldogs then drove the ball down the field and a controversial pass interference penalty gav e Baker a first down Justice C ou rt Report The Justice Court office at the courthouse annex building in Heppner reports handling the fol lowing business: D aniel M Lam othe, 35. Shirley Harris. 36, Heppncr- Maintaming a Dog as a Nuisance. $43 fine We Print BUSINESS CARDS G a iette-Times - 676-9228 at the nine y ard line Luke Palmer then caught a pass from Demck Riggs for the touchdown Johnson's kick tied the game at 14-14 with 25 seconds left in the half The Mustangs took over at their 40 after the short kick-off McCabe ran for 15 y ards and Scott took a middle screen for 35 yards to the 11 yard line Knowles then split the uprights with a 28-yard field goal to give the Mustangs a 17-14 lead at half-time McCabe took the sqcond half kick-off 20 y ards to the 3 of the Mustangs McCabe then ran for 14 and Schonbachler for 19 more The drive stalled howev er, and Baker took ov er at their own 13 after a punt Stefan Matheny knocked down a third down pass to force the Bulldogs to punt Scott took the punt, getting a good block from Clint Bellamy to get around the comer, down the sideline and got a crushing block from Blake Knowles to go into the end /one for a 50-yard return for the touchdown The snap w as fumbled on the point after try and Mustangs led 23-14 with 8:11 left in the third quarter The defense held on Baker's next possession and the Mustangs took ov er at their own 33 y ard line Schonbachler ran for nine y ards and McCabe ran for two yards and a first down then for 17 more Scott ran for seven and Schonbachler for six more and another first down McCabe picked up five then Matteson hit Matheny for 15 and a first down at the five McCabe tan for two. then for three more and a touchdown Knowles' kick was good to give the Mustangs a 30-14 lead with 3:00 left in the third quarter Schonbachler intercepted a Bulldog pass on Baker's next possession and returned it to the Baker 39 y ard line Matteson hit Knowles for 14 yards and Schonbachler picked up four more to the 20. The drive stalled and the Bulldogs took over at their own 31 yard line as the third quarter ended The Mustangs' defense held and took over on their own 38-y ard line following the punt McCabe then broke the game open, racing 62 y ards for a touchdown The tow point PAT try failed and Heppner held a 36-14 lead early in the fourth quarter The Bulldogs came right back and scored on a Casey Grove 15- yard pass from Jake Hester The pass failed on the PAT as the Bulldogs closed to within 36-20 with 7:29 left The onside kick failed and Heppner took over at the 49 of Baker McCabe ran for five. Scott for four and Schonbachler for three and a first down Scott ran for nine and Schonbachler for 15 more McCabe then took it 13 yard for his fourth touchdown of the game and after the PAT failed Heppner held a 42-20 lead The Mustangs’ defense shut down the Bulldogs the rest of the game and their last scoring chance ended with Clint Bellamy intercepting a pass and returning it 15 yards. McCabe led all rushers with 178 yards on 18 carries and four touchdowns Schonbachler ran 13 times for 43 yards and Scott ran 10 times for 37 yards Matteson was five for nine passing for 88 yards The offensive line of Jake Roy.
