Lacey Matteson takes third rookie title Lacey Matteson of Heppner took home her third rookie title at the high school rodeo held in Bums this past weekend Matteson took a fourth place finish in barrel racing, turning in a time of 18 066 and roped her way to sixth in the breakaway w ith a 5 07 Blake Knowles and Ryan Matteson. both Heppner. grabbed third place in team roping with a time of 13.52. Katie Bacon of lone rode to a third place finish in pole bending with a 21 823 Condons Mame Wilkins placed well in two events, turning in a fifth place goat ty ing run of 9.39 and a seventh place in barrel racing with an 18 235 John Osbum of Monument finished fifth in the team roping with a 13.81; and Sherman County's Joe Irzyk captured the steer wrestling title w ith a 6.95 run The final competition of the fall season will take place this weekend at LaGrande. The Heppner Mustang JV foot ball team used a 22 point fourth quarter to rally from a 16-12 defi- cit and defeated the visiting Umatilla Vikings. 34-16. on Mon day. Sept 20. The Mustangs got a break as the Vikmgs fumbled the opening kick-off at their own 30 Heppner drove down to the one where Travis Bellamy took it in for the touchdown The two-point try failed and Heppner led 6-0 with 5 :54 left in the first The Vikmgs took an 8-6 lead in the second but the Mustangs re gained the lead as Kev in Drake caught a 40 yard touchdown pass from Nick Anthony with a minute left in the half The Vikings took a 16-12 lead in the third quarter which might have been more but Bellamy had two interceptions in the quarter Heppner took the lead for good w ith 8:50 left in the fourth as Brad Adams scored on a one y ard run Bellamy ran in the PAT for a 20- 16 lead Brandon Young intercepted a pass on the Vikings' next posses sion to set up a Donald Adams two y ard bootleg for a 26-16 lead midway through the fourth Bellamy scored his second touchdown on a 10 y ard run w ith 48 seconds left Jerry Shank caught a pass from Donald Adams for the two-point conversion and the final score of 34-16. The Mustangs' next game will be against the Riverside JVs in Heppner on Thursday. According to Morrow County Behavioral Health, statistics have shown that when children receive as little as "a half- hour per week of one-to-one unconditional positive regard from an adult mentor, the results arc almost always positive and lasting Negative behaviors are not as pronounced and the child has a greater motiv ation for learning and getting along with others ” This is how the program works Children are referred to the program by their teacher These children may be shy . acting out. have learning disabilities or just in need of more indiv idual attention They are then paired with a volunteer Once a week, for 10 weeks, the volunteer and student will meet for 30-45 minutes of conversation, games and crafts At the end of the 10-week period, a party is held for the volunteers and their students to celebrate their accomplishments “It is indeed a Septem ber 8 8 th ~ Saturday an hour and a half on the bus each morning and afternoon. In addition to her school work, she helps out at home with cooking, housework and caring for her younger siblings, who include Mary. 16, a junior at HHS. Agustin. 10, a sixth grader at Heppner Elementary School. Jackie, eight, a third grader at HES. and Paula, six, a first grader at HES Her father is employed at Vey Ranches and her mother at a potato processing plant in Hermiston After graduation from HHS next spring. Luiza plans to attend college in Mexico. But for now. her favorite thing is to attend Mexican dances “every Saturday night” in Hermiston.
