Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, July 21,1999 - FIVE Willow Creek Baptist provides unique blend of VBS, community service v Photo by Allison Sykes Youth volunteers with the Willow Creek Baptist Church Bible school assist in community service projects in downtown Heppner. Photo by Allison Sykes Young people gather at the football field at the Morrow County Fairgrounds prior to beginning a prayer walk through Heppner. The youth, from the Tri-Cities, Portland, Texas and California, came to Heppner to help out with the Willow Creek Baptist Bible School and local community service projects this week. The Willow Creek Baptist Church of Heppner, in the midst of their vacation Bible school activities this week, is offering a unique community service- oriented approach to their outreach. As a part of their Bible school program, "Mount Extreme", for kids in preschool through sixth grade, the church brought in youth from as far away as Portland, Tri-Cities, California and Texas. In the mornings, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon, the youth assist with Bible school activities. In the afternoons and evenings the high school and college-age youth help with service projects in the local communities. Monday afternoon the group worked under the direction of Heppner City Manager Gerry Breazeale, cleaning out gutters, pulling weeds and picking up cigarette butts and other trash in downtown Heppner. Monday evening they held a prayer walk, which began at the fairgrounds and wound through the downtown area. Walkers, including local people from several different area churches, lifted up prayers for the Heppner community. Willow Creek Baptist Pastor Brent Waldrep said that the community has been very supportive of their efforts; Fome Burkenbine of Central Market provided soft drinks; Dick Devin of Devin Chevron donated sandwiches; and the fairgrounds made facilities available to the group. Tuesday the group went to the Pioneer Memorial Nursing home where they had lunch with the residents, visited with them, played games and sang songs. Wednesday they planned to have lunch at the St. Patrick's Senior Center Mealsite. That afternoon they plan to do landscaping for the Willow Creek Waterpark. In return, the waterpark has donated the use of its facilities from 9-10:30 p.m.Thursday for a pool party for all youth of the community. Pastor Waldrep said that the pool party, free of charge to all youth, will give them a chance to "have a good time and meet other high school and college age students." Thursday afternoon a prayer walk is planned in lone and then Friday a cleanup of Willow Creek is tentatively scheduled if time permits. Friday VBS will conclude with a parents' night beginning at 6 p.m. at the Seventh-day Adventist building. The evening will include a program and snacks will be provided. All kids who attended Bible school and their parents are invited to attend.
