EIGHT - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, April 21,1999 TigerScots squeak by lone girls; lone boys defeated Weed and crop tour planned May 13 OSU Morrow County Extension Service has set May 13 for its annual Weed and Crop Tour, beginning at 9 a m. Those attending can learn about alternative crops, weed control and direct seeding in dry land cropping systems. Prizes will be awarded for the most guessed weed contest. Pesticide credits are pending. Lunch will be provided. Morning attendance is required for lunch. For more information call the Morrow County Extension Office at 541-676-9642. The girls' tennis team won three matches while the Lady TigerScots claimed four matches. The lone boys did not fare as well, losing all four of their matches to Weston McEwen. In singles' action, Molly Barrow lost to Renaee Robertson, 2-8. Barrow's backhand was flawless, but Robertson had low, hard hits with lots of top spin. Jessica Krebs fell to Denise Bauman, 1- 8. Krebs is commended for her hustle in the back court and her serving was consistent. Jennifer Thompson fell to Sarah Kirby, 8-9. Thompson and Kirby were tied 8-8 and went into a seven- point tie breaker. Thompson lost the tie breaker 5-7. She had some strong hits and used the entire area of the court. Thompson had an exemplary shot down the sideline in game 12; she just kept getting everything back over the net and waited for her opponent to make the mistakes. Salli McElligott defeated Amber Gillaworth, 8-2. McElligott had shots that were well placed; she rushed the net and kept her opponent on the defensive the entire match. Steve Crum fell to Jason Peterson, 1-8. Crum had difficulty returning Peterson's slice serve but Crum was able to get in some well placed lobs when the opponent rushed the net. Derek Campbell lost to Brander Richmond, 1-8. Campbell's opponent had keen shot placement which made it difficult for Campbell to return the ball back over the net in many cases. In doubles' action, Ton Odinet and Niki Sullivan fell to Amber Heilman and Leora Shoemaker, 4-8. Odinet aced two serves in a row in game four to tighten the lead, 2-3. Sullivan followed with an ace serve against Leora Shoemaker in game 10 to bring the score to 4-6. Niki Sullivan doubled back to team up with Amellia Peck and challenge Sarah Parker and Becky Brito to win that match 8- 5. Peck and Sullivan started slowly and were down 1-4. Peck had an ace serve in game 6 to close the lead 2-4. Sullivan also aced a serve in game 1 and had an excellent slam at the net in game 12, bringing the set score to 7-5. Katie Tworek and Rosanne Baker teamed up to defeat Jenine Huntsman and Ashley Tubbs, 8-4. Baker hit well at the baseline while Tworek was a force to be reckoned with at the net. Adam Neiffer and Adam McCabe were out-skilled, losing to Nate Fuller and Travis Glover, 4-8. McCabe and Neiffer both had some good aces in the match. Neiffer had some noteworthy shots in the alleys and McCabe split the uprights, a shot in the middle of opponents in game 10. Jeremiah McElligott and Colin McEligott lost to Ben Winn and Pete Weidert, 1-8. Collin had some good play at the net and was able to hit shots in between Weston McEwen. The dynamic duo of Jeremiah McElligott and Colin McElligott played extremely well to take the consolation round. Team McElligott lost their first match against Rouston and Morris of Umatilla, 1-8. The McElligotts went directly into the consolation round to play Price and Schuld from Weston McEwen and Team McElligott promptly whipped their opponents, 8-4. The McElligott pair played Weidert and Winn for the consolation, defeating them in a tight match, 9-7. "Team McElligott seemed to frustrate the Weston McEwen team by getting their hits back over the net. It seemed like it didn't matter what Winn and Weidert served up for lone, they just wouldn't give up. Both, Colin and Jeremiah played extremely hard and had an abundance of fun," commented coach Cathy McCabe. Jeremy Rietmann had a good tournament showing. Rietmann defeated Shilo Langston of Sherman County, 8-2, but ended up losing a third place finish to Mike White of Weston McEwen. Jeremy played well and had several ace serves throughout the tournament, Derek Campbell sparred against J.T. Haines of Stanfield, losing 3-8. Campbell followed his first match and played Brander Jeremiah and Colin McElligott, consolation winners at Sherman County tournament. Richmond of Weston McEwen, falling to Richmond, 0-8. Adam Neiffer and Adam McCabe were defeated by Welk and Kock of Sherman County. Neiffer and McCabe went on to play Vallet and Palomino of Grange leadership conference held By Dolpha Jones The Grange Leadership Con ference was held Saturday evening at the Greenfield Grange Hall in Boardman. Introduction of the speaker, State M aster Ed Luttrell, state secretary Sue Kroecker, and state youth chair man was made by Jane Dean, secretary of Greenfield Grange. She told of the various projects and occupations of Morrow County including both the north and south ends of the county. The meeting began with a skit by the visitors and Ned Clark. The group added their ideas of what the Grange needs to increase and the many projects the Grange sponsors for the benefit of youth, seniors and families. Some of the benefits of the Grange include the insurance program, scholarships and transportation; and with the Junior Grange, self-control, re spect and leadership. According to input at the meeting, the grang ers should recognize the groups and help with such things as com munity projects, transportation for mmm Every car should at least have a thrust alignment. The grange also needs interesting lecture pro grams, both education and enter taining, they said. How to write and present reso lutions was discussed. Recogni tion to those who work on the various projects is also needed, they concluded. The evening began with a din ner prepared by the Greenfield Grange ladies. Those attending from Lexington Grange were Jean Nelson, lecturer; Kathy and Ned Clark, assistant steward and LAS; Cecil Jones, treasurer; Delpha Jones, secretary and Wheatland Pomona deputy; and Clarence Buchanan, master. It was announced that the state master will be present at the Lex ington Grange meeting and present 25 year, 50 year and 70 year rec ognition certificates. Pomona Grange will meet at Spray on Saturday, April 24. The program will be given by the di rector about the Fossil beds from the Kent Ranch. The program will starting at 10:30 p.m. promptly. County students to attend writing festival The Morrow County School District will send 22 students to the Fourteenth Annual Oregon Writing Festival. This year's event will be held on Saturday, May 1, at Portland State University in Portland. "The Oregon Writing Festival is sponsored by the Oregon Council of Teachers of English and will be a very rewarding experience for the students.," said a Morrow County School District news release. They anticipate that more than 1000 students from all over the state will attend. The Morrow County School District provides the funding required for students and staff to attend the event.
