On February 2,1999, Heppner
D istrict Ranger, Delanne
Ferguson, decided to implement
the 1999 Precommercial Chain
saw Thinning on the Heppner
Ranger District. Precommercial
thinning is needed to improve tree
growth and maintain vigor within
562 acres o f overstocked stands
of seedlings and saplings 20 to 25
years old. Trees will be cut by
hand using chainsaws. Trees less
than 18 inches in height or greater
than 7 inches DBH will not be cut
unless they are deformed, are
western juniper or infected with
mistletoe.
