United Way donates to Morrow County To the Editor: United Way of Morrow County appreciates everyone who has contributed to our program, par ticularly PGE, Boardman Phar macy, Boeing and the Hoffman Corporation for their donations. Many residents may not real ize that all contributions made to United Way of Morrow County stay in Morrow County. Less than one percent of the contributions made are used in overhead ex pense. United Way of Morrow County is operated strictly on vol unteer services. We are always seeking new board members. Due to everyone’s generosity, we were able to give all o f the following organizations funding in 1998: Boardman Child Develop ment Center; Boardman Eagles; Boardman Firefighter’s Associa tion; CreativeCare Preschool; Domestic Violence Service; Heppner Day Care, Inc.; ICABO; lone Rural Fire Protec tion District; Imgon EMS; Irrigon Rural Fire Protection District; Neighborhood Center of South Morrow County. United Way of Morrow County also provided two families with shelter funding after their homes were destroyed by fire. United Way of Morrow County meets quarterly. Our next meet ing will be Monday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m. Anyone interested in volun teering or attending, call 676-5154. Our next grant opportunity will be in July. United Way of Morrow County (s) Lisa Smith Heppner The Morrow County Commission on Children & Families has established a community development fund to assist child care providers in improving the quality and accessibility of child care in Morrow County. Approximately $500 is available each quarter and any state registered or licensed child care provider may apply. The commission will give priority to projects which address after-hours child care, latchkey resources, child care for children who are ill and child care training. However, any project that addresses the commission's goals will be considered. Next quarter's proposals will be reviewed on Tuesday, March 9, during the monthly commission meeting, but must be received by the commission office by Sunday, February 28, to be considered. Applications are available at the commission office at 120 South Main in Heppner or by calling 676-9675. Kitzhaber this week had Steve Marks, his senior adviser, present a plan to the Senate that he called "a reasonable compromise." What he should have just called it (is) "a lie." All he is really doing is a repeating the same plan from last summer with a few added things. Things that will not happen in his plan until the year of 2007, which is five years after he leaves office. In addition, you know that the governor or any other political representative can not keep a promise once they left office. After they have left office, it is in the hands of the people that are elected and come to office after their term of office is up. We, the Miller Family, will not give up our home and property to the governor or any other person. We have lived in Oregon our whole lives. The Miller Family came to Oregon almost 100 years (ago), when my great-grandfather came to Oregon on the Oregon Trail and settled in the North Willamette Valley (to) run his own onion farm. The Miller family has worked very hard for Oregon, our local community and our families. Please help us to save our home from the wrong decision of Governor John Kitzhaber Look at the waste of our tax dollars, over $90 million dollars of our money. I do not know about you, (but) our family and I could live very well on even a small fraction of $90 million dollars for the rest of our lives. I work very hard for what little money I make and I do not waste my money. Nor should our Governor Kitzhaber. Governor John Kitzhaber is supposed to speak for the people of Oregon. But he's not listening to the people, because the people are saying, "Don't waste our tax dollars." It is a simple idea that (is) easy to do, or as Nike (an Oregon-based company) has saidT ’'Just Do It'," ,H jy iri: , Winners of the 1998 winners of the "Yard-of-the-Month" co sponsored by Green Feed and Heppner Garden Club were recognized at the club meeting February 1. The club presented gift certificates at Green Feed to: Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Bailey for a "meticulously groomed yard featuring contem porary accents"; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Smith whose large yard and garden showed careful horticulture practices and selection of choice varieties of shrubs and. perenials; Mr. and Mrs. Archie Padberg for their newly landscaped yard demonstrating a maximum variety of blooming plants in a limited space; and to Eleanor Gonty and her son, Tom Gonty's yard showing an "impressive collection of historic cultivars." Also a winner was Adlards' yard "exempting effective hillside landscaping and creative use of garden accessories." Kay Proctor and Ronda Helfrecht, new manager of Green Feed agreed with the garden club to continue sponsoring the contest in 1999 "Toward a more beautiful Heppner," according to a club spokesman. The program was a summary of the place of the rose in history from antiquity to the present.. Bebe Munkers demonstrated how to propagate roses by cuttings. Other business included a report by Peggy Connor on the Oregon State Federation of Garden Clubs environmental Smokey Bear poster contest for grades one-five in Heppner and lone and home-schooled children. The club will award cash prizes and present contestants with garden seeds.
