After hearing that expression over the years, I now know it means two full moons in one month, one often tinged with blue. January brought two full moons, a tremendous Town and Country celebration, and a jolt to Heppner with the pending closure of our mill. Meraa Debolt, our Town and Country guest speaker wrote a wonderful thank you to the Chamber of Commerce praising our community and pointing out that Heppner does not have an attitude of self-pity, rather an attitude of "let's help one another get through this." We often need to see ourselves through the eyes of a visitor and get a better perspective of how lucky we are to call Heppner home. She and her husband enjoyed their accommodations and hospitality at the Northwestern Motel. In addition to her thank you, this week she sent a copy of her Museum Musings published in the Skamania County Pioneer. Yes, our work is cut out for us. It will take the Port of Morrow, the county, the city, Heppner Economic Development C o rp o ra tio n , H eppner Coordinating Council, the Chamber of Commerce and all the citizens to work together to bring additional jobs to Heppner, to retain the people we have, and to help all get through the transition period. Not only do we have sturdy Irish stock, we ' have Swedes, Germans, Scots, English and just plain hearty rural Americans to keep our community forging ahead. Nothing with value comes easy. Speaking of the Irish and all those Irish-for-a-day. Plans are coming together for the 17th annual celebration March 12, 13, and 14, 1999. It's tradition with a few changes you'll soon hear about. Featured music will be John Doherty and the Irish Singers, the return of Mountain Aire, Contemporary Christian music in the park, and Cascadia Folk Quartet on Saturday night. All you hard working people will want to take a break to tap your toes to the music during the weekend. Stay tuned and keep those auction items coming in.
